Confined Spaces Can be DEADLYA number of people are killed or seriously injured in confined spaces each year in the UK. Those killed include not only peopleworking in the confined space but those who attempt to rescue them without the proper training and equipment.

What the Law StatesYou must carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks for all work activities for the purpose of deciding what measures are necessary for safety. (The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, reg 3). For work in confined spaces this means identifying the hazards present, assessing the risks and determining what precautions to take.

What is a Confined Space?It can be any space of an enclosed nature where there is arisk of death or serious injury from hazardous substances ordangerous conditions.

Examples are • Storage tanks• Silos• Enclosed drains• Reaction vessels

What are the Dangers?• Lack of Oxygen• Poisonous Gases• Liquids and Solids which can suddenly fill the space• Fires and Explosions• Residues left in tanks, vessels etc• High concentrations of dust, eg flour silos• Hot conditions leading to increase in body temp.
