Safety Management Systems in Aviation

Alan J. Stolzer, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA, Carl D. Halford and John J. Goglia

Ashgate Studies in Human Factors for Flight Operations

Some sectors of the aviation industry already implement Safety Management Systems and have done so for some time. Now, with the ICAO mandate coming into effect for aircraft operators and maintenance organizations, the pressure is on all parts of the industry to come into line.

Safety Management Systems in Aviation offers a timely and unique way to introduce SMS to ICAO-regulated companies and also those that are outside its remit but appreciate the benefits.

The book covers the essential points of SMS with the knowledgeable authors going beyond merely defining it. They discuss the quality management underpinnings, the ‘four pillars’ (policy, safety risk management, safety assurance and safety promotion) as well as reliability engineering, SMS implementation, and the scientific rigour that must be designed into proactive safety.

FICTIONAL NARRATIVE AND COMMENTARIES MAKE SMS COME ALIVEA special feature is a fictional narrative about a mysterious power loss on a commercial flight. The story begins and concludes the text, engaging the reader and demonstrating that SMS has a direct impact on operations. To further enhance the practical application of the material, the book also features numerous in-practice commentaries from some of the most respected names in aviation safety.

Safety Management Systems have been around for a long time and proved their worth in other industries, with many organizations appreciating the efficiency benefits as well as their contribution to safety. Despite aviation’s enviable safety record, the predicted long-term increase in traffic means there must be continual improvement. SMS can play a key role in that development; Safety Management Systems in Aviation is a cost-effective aid towards meeting that objective.

This book is an invaluable reference for commercial airlines, maintenance and repair organizations, airports, and other key sectors of the aviation industry. It is also a comprehensive textbook for students of aviation safety. Do not delay in making it part of your SMS implementation programme. Order your copy/copies today.
