•UndernormalconditionstheEncore®muzzleloaderisunloadedsim-plybyfiringitintoasuitableandsafebackstop.Thereare,however,someconditionsunderwhichthefirearmcannotbefiredandthechargemustberemovedmanually.

•Theprojectileisnotseatedfirmlyagainstthepowdercharge,stopimmediately!donotattempttofirethegun.Youmustremovethechargeandthencleanthebarrel.

To remove a charge from your Encore® muzzleloader it will be necessary to take the following steps:

•Makecertainthatthegunisunprimedbytippingthebarrelopenandremovingtheprimerfromthebreechplugifoneispresent.

•Removethebreechplug.

•Withthebreechplugremoved,pointthemuzzleup.Gravityshouldthencausethepelletsortheloosepowdertodropout.Thesabotorbulletcanthenbepokedoutoftheborewithyourramrod.Topushthebulletfullyoutofthebarrel,itwillbenecessarytoaddtheextendedsuperjag(whichcamewithyourrifle)toyourramrod,or,youcanusealonger“rangerod”ifyouhaveaccesstoone.

•Ifyourpropellant(pelletsorloosepowder)doesnotcomeoutasaresultofgravity,pushtheentirechargeoutfromthemuzzleendwithyourramrodandtheinstalledramrodextension.Ifthatisn’tpossi-ble,youshouldthenpourwaterintothebreechareaofthebarreltofullysaturate(andliquify)thepelletsorpowder.Afterthepowderisremoved,pushthebulletoutwithyourramrodinsertedfromthemuzzle(withtheramrodextensioninstalledifnecessary).

•Oncethebarrelisdetached-submergethebreechsectionofthebarrelinapailofwater(hotwaterifpossible).Makecertainthatatleast8”ofthebreechsectionissubmergedforatleastonehalfhour.

•Aftersoakingthepowderfor30minutesandrenderingitinert,trypullingtheprojectilefromtheborebyusingyourramrod(orarangerod)withabulletpuller.Screwthebulletpullerontoyourrod,inserttheramrodfromthemuzzleend,andwhenyoumakecontactwiththeprojectile,turntherodclockwise,screwingthebulletpullerintotheprojectile.Oncescrewedintotheprojectile,pulltheprojectileoutofthebarrel.Ifyouareusingasabot,makesurethatboththeprojectileandthesabotareremovedfromthebore.

•If,foranyreason,youareunabletoremovethechargeintheman-nerrecommended,squirtoilintotheprimerpocketofthebreechplugandintothebarrel’sbreechareainordertoensurethatthepowderchargeisinert,(ifyouweretousewateronly-itwilljustdryoutoveraperiodoftime),andreturnthebarreltotheservicedepartmentattheaddressshownbelowwithaletterdescribingtheproblem.

•Nextinthecleaningprocess;fillapanwithhotsoapywater.Submergethemuzzleendofthebarrelinthewaterandpushawetpatchdownthebarrel(fromthebreechend)ontheendofyourramrodthathasajaginstalledonit(ajagcomeswithThompson/Center™muzzleloadersfromthefactory).Pumptheramrodandpatchupanddowninthebarrel.Thiswilldrawwaterintothebarrelandflushoutthefouling.Whenthebarrelisclean,wipeoffanyex-cesswaterandallowittodry.

•Thoroughlywipeanypowderresiduefromtheframeassembly.drythepartsthoroughlyandlubricatethemlightlytopreventrustandcorrosion.

•Useapressurizedmoisturedisplacingoiltocleanandlubricatethefiringpinwithintheframe(fromboththefrontandback-asshowninFIGURES35and36).

•AftercleaningyourEncore®,itisrecommendedthatyoulightlylubricatethemetalsurfacesoftherifle.donotuseheavygreaseoroil,asduringcoldweather,lubemaycongealandslowthehammerfall(orkeepitfromstrikingthefiringpinaltogether)whenthetriggerispulled.

•Withthebarrelcompletelydry,lightlylubricatetheborewithaqualitygunlubricantor,inkeepingwiththeall-naturalmethod,Thompson/Center’sNaturalLube1000PlusBoreButter.Re-installthebreechplug,makingsurethatyouhavelubricatedallofthethreadswithananti-seizelubricantlikeThompson/Center’sSuperLube.Thebreechplugshouldbethreadedintoplacebyturningitclockwisewiththebreechplugwrench-untilitisseated.Screwbreechplugincarefully.Becertainthatthethreadsmeshproperly(notcross-threaded)andensurethatthebreechplugissnug.

•Reversethesestepstoreassemble,makingsurethatyoucheckforproperfunctioningofthetrigger,strikerandsafetymechanismpriortoloadingandfiring.ThebreechplugoftheEncore®muzzleloadershouldbeseatedinthebarreluntilitis“snug”.“Snug”isdefinedasbeingastightasyoucanturnitintothebarrelbyusingthebreechplugwrenchandturningitclockwise,whileholdingthebarrelinyourhand.Whenyoucannolongergripthebarrel,anditturnsinyourhand,thebreechplugis“snug”.

•Thebreechplugshouldbethreadedintoplacebyturningitclock-wisewiththebreechplugwrench-untilitisfillyseated.Screwthebreechplugincarefully.Becertainthatthethreadsmeshproperly(notcross-threaded)andensurethathebreechplugissnug.
