Sub-Themes
The fabric of life is critically affected by the availability or otherwise of safe and comfortable habitat. It is necessary to create safe, secure and affordable habitat for the masses for the growth and development of the country, resulting in a more inclusive society. Habitat is made up of physical factors, such as soil, moisture, range of temperature, and availability of light as well as biotic factors such as the availability of food and the presence of predators. Hence habitat can compasses a number of facilities which include buildings, roads, sanitation, water supply, disposal system and energy etc, that are required to be created for the living of human population. One of the important necessities has emerged is the shelters including physical and social infrastructure, which provide a decent living overcoming all the adversities of natural hazards.
Smart City concept has now been introduced, making use of all natural resources in creating the habitat in most efficient manner and then operationalising the habitat in efficient manner. Whereas creating a new smart city is comparatively easy to plan but converting the existing cities into smart cities is an uphill task. This conversion has direct impact on safety of habitat and of the mankind. New habitat construction has to focus on housing durability enhancement, reducing over-crowding in urban household, establishing safe drinking water, healthcare and sanitation systems and increasing the tenure security of settlements. Innovative engineering practices have an important role to play in enhancing the quality of human settlements in urban and rural areas.
Urban centres like the city of Delhi which is already facing the serious threat of fire hazards and earthquake hazards has to cope up also with urban transport or road safety and the new challenge of public safety, especially for women. Therefore the theme : Incorporating Safety in Habitat and Smart Cities becomes extremely relevant in the present context and engineering solutions have to be found for safe habitat building.
The objective of the safety convention is to highlight the contribution of emerging technologies and engineering practices for safe and secure habitat creation and setting up smart cities.
Incorporating Safety in Habitat and Smart Cities.
1. Mechanisation in the construction sector and miniaturisation of construction equipment for large usage.
2. Use of sensor technologies for smart and intelligent devices in the habitat sector for true intelligent building.
3. Use of control technologies to achieve disaster resistant habitat systems
4. Quicker methods of construction and high performance materials
5. Use of pre-fabricated technology for efficient, sustainable quality products
