Safer Neighbourhood News Cluster Inspector News Inspector Nicki Reynolds
Welcome to the December Newsletter the final one for 2015. The theme throughout the newsletters you have received this year has been crime prevention, we are entering the "Christmas Period" which for many of you means you have additional items in your homes and many of them will be valuable both to you and your families but also to criminals. As I have said before many crimes are opportunist and that opportunity is often provided because a house looks different to others in the road and that’s because there are no lights on or post is piling up in a porch for a criminal this indicates that that house may be empty and the risk of trying to get in and out without being caught appears to reduce, please don’t let this be your home invest in timer switches that allow lights and even radios to be timed to come on and off if you are out. If you are planning to go away then please spend some time looking at how secure your home is and as always if you would like some crime prevention advice one of my team will happily come and discuss this with you. My teams have been patrolling and identifying vulnerable houses this has ranged from residents leaving doors and windows open, to houses in darkness anything they find they have been leaving a card entitled "while you were out" to the owners highlighting the vulnerability. We have also been looking at vehicles where property has been left on display and again we are regularly seeing this and also cars that have been left unlocked. Please don’t let your home or car be that opportunity that a criminal is looking for. So to finish off 2015 I urge you check your home Security. Best wishes and Happy New tear when 2016 arrives.

We are looking at setting up new Neighbourhood Watch Schemes. What is a NWS? It is a scheme for local residents who are concerned about crime in their neighbourhood/ street and wish to help prevent it. It is NOT run by the Police but by residents who have regular contact – whether by meetings or email groups – to discuss concerns/ problems in their street.
The group will keep in contact with the police who will provide crime statistics and combined solutions to problems in their area.
Members of the local Police team will be on hand to attend residents meetings.
jIssue 27
NWS reduces crime: evidence indicates it cuts crime by between 16 – 26% in areas used.
Reduces the fear of crime by letting people know the real crime levels in their area.
Residents are more aware of crime in their area and ways to prevent it.
Residents can be aware of current crime trends and criminal methods in their area and can act before they become a victim.
Encourages greater liaison between neighbours who work as a group to keep their area safe and crime free.
Membership may save residents money on their house insurance.
If you are interested participating in a scheme or would simply like more details please get in touch with us and we can guide you through the process.
Team News: The Team has been busy throughout November taking part in various operations. As well as the proactive patrols made by the team to bring down burglary and motor vehicle crime. The team has leafleted the vastmajority of the burglary hotspot areas to make residents aware of the increase of motor vehicle crime and to put preventative measures in place. We have also offered extensive crime prevention advice to our residents to improve security on their home.
jIssue 27
PC Michealides has also attended the Indian Deep 50 Plus meeting and offered crime prevention advice. The team also took part in the flag raising ceremony at the NANAK DARBAR, In High Road N11 on the 29th November. We also attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic school and provided street safety advice to the children who attend Crime Prevention Southgate Green Ward has been using Predictive Mapping to focus with burglary patrols in parts of the ward where crime has occurred. Although the early evenings are becoming lighter we still notice many homes in total darkness making it obvious that no one is home. Remember to leave a light on or use timer plugs. Keep your doors and windows closed and locked. UPVC doors must be double locked with the key. Be extra vigilant if you know that your neighbours are out. Call police if you see anything suspicious.
Pension Fraud With effect from April 6th this year, when you Reach 55. With effect from April 6th this year, when you reach 55 and if you have been saving in a personal or

company pension, you will have wider choices with what you do with the fund you have accrued. You will still be able to cash in the fund to buy an annuity giving you a guaranteed income for life, but now you will also be able to release as much of the fund as you wish ... to spend on what you like. Like most financial products, pensions and annuities are regulated by law, including how they are advertised and sold. However, this does not stop scammers approaching you to put your money into fraudulent or otherwise unregulated/poorly managed annuities or investment schemes, with the result that you will lose some or all of the savings you were relying on for your retirement. There will also be less protection from pension companies in the way of your fund being frozen, if you have chosen to draw your money rather than transferring it between legitimate providers.

What you need to do
● Close your windows and sunroof Lock all doors and activate any security devices when leaving the vehicle even for a few minutes. Check your doors manually as remote locking devices can sometimes be affected by electronic interference.
● Take all valuables including sunglasses with you if you can. If you are unable to take them from the vehicle lock them in the boot or place them out of view.
● Remove parking permits, radio face plates and Satnavs including their cradle, ensuring to wipe the window where the Satnav holder may have left a visible mark.
● Fit a locking petrol cap if your vehicle doesn’t already have one. Fit anti tamper screws on your number plates and locking wheel nuts if not standard.
● Consider getting a steering lock or gearstick lock and pedal box to improve security of your unattended vehicle.
● Park with care, particularly at night or if you are leaving the vehicle for some time. If possible always park in a busy, well lit area. Managed car park facilities may be a better choice a list of Police approved

safer car parks can be found at the British Parking Association website.
● Avoid leaving car keys close to your front door or in a visible location. A thief can reach in using a hand or device and steal the keys to your vehicle. Fitting a plate to the rear of the letterbox opening can prevent this.
