SAFE RESPECTFUL RESPONSIBLE

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 4 is already in full swing.

I am proud to say we are well into the teaching

and learning of our final term for the year, with

planning well underway for the many activities we

offer to the students.

Kinder Orientation

Welcoming our new students has begun for the

2018 intake of students. These sessions are of

great value in allowing the new kindies to feel

familiar with “Big School” and allows us to get to

know the students and their families prior to the

start of the school year. The team of Kindy

teachers make this a positive experience for our

new families.

PBL Cards

Green PBL cards are being sent home each week

this term to ensure parents are informed on their

child’s progress. Please sign and return the card

each Monday. Our expectations are stated on the

card giving a clear understanding of what your

child needs to do to be a “Craigie Kind of Kid”. If

your child was given a “Not yet” and a number

that corresponds to their area for development,

we know you will discuss these and support us by

encouraging the best efforts from your child in the

following week.

Swim School Year 2 and 3

Swimming begins next Monday for 10 DAYS.

Smart Art Challenge - Ability Links

that Kanwal PS gained first place in the challenge.

K-6 Social Skills Program

Craigie has a big part in teaching social and emotional

learning in the school. The

program aims to improve student well being by

teaching strategies for getting along, self

regulating emotions, problem solving peacefully and

developing a positive (growth) mindset. Listed, are the

areas included in the program. The program will be

uploaded to the website and can then be discussed at

home. This will create the consistency that makes

PBL most effective.

Aboriginal News

The students interested in learning the didgeridoo will begin lessons on Wednesday morning. An afternoon tea is

being held today at 2:30 –3:30pm to meet and greet Mr Terry Hayek, our Aboriginal Support Teacher. All welcome

to join us in the Community Room.

Community Room Revival

Thank you to P&C president Karen Wallace for helping clean and sort out the P&C room in order for programs to be

conducted in this valuable space. It is being utilised for well-being programs, Aboriginal and Art Programs. A

classroom, which had served as such a space, was removed during the holidays.

Creepy for Cooper - 31 October

The P&C, students and staff are holding a fund raising day for Cooper. This aims to be a day of fun and we would

appreciate your support. Cooper in 4H is very ill and the students in his class want to show compassion and care.

They are keen to do some fund raising to help out at this difficult time. All students K-6 are invited to dress up, and

make an (optional) gold coin donation. See the flyer included in this newsletter for more information.

I thank you for your ongoing support.

Ukulele Group Performance

The holiday break began with an enthusiastic and

talented group of students representing the

school at the Central Coast Ukulele Festival at

The Entrance foreshore. Our performance was

joyful and we very much appreciated the cheers

of encouragement from the audience. Big thank

you to the mum and dads for being part of the

event.

Year 5 Camp 2017

Nerves, Butterflies, excitement and sore

arms from tugging around all that heavy

luggage! These were all the feelings year

five were experiencing after a 5 and a half

year wait. It was finally here, Year 5 camp!

It was Wednesday, the 6th of September and

everyone was waiting in the hall for the bus.

Nobody would keep quiet, buzzing around with excitement.

Once the bus came it was about a 25 minute trip to Morisset Outdoor Education Camp.

Everyone knew that camp was going to be good, but not as good as it turned out to be!

When we arrived, everyone had to go to the hall to learn all the rules and get assigned to our cabins.

At camp, there were certain meal times where everyone had to head to the dining hall to eat their

food. The food was delicious. For breakfast there were things like cereal, pancakes, toast, baked

beans and spaghetti. For lunch we had hot dogs and burgers.

At dinner time we had spaghetti, sausages, garlic bread and veggies.

There were also food breaks like morning tea, afternoon tea and

supper.

The activities there were incredible. There was the horrifying giant

swing, the dual flying fox, archery, high ropes, canoeing, messy mud

world, raft building and rock climbing. We also had night time activities

like; games night, county fair and story time by the camp fire.

At camp we had instructors that would guide us around and make sure

that we were safe and having a wonderful time, all the time.

Our instructor was Yoshi. He was a really cool instructor that loved to

sing silly songs and play fun games with us. His real name was Josh,

but we had to work that out for ourselves!

Overall, Year Five had a stunning time at camp and even though we

were sad to go, we were thrilled to see our families again and get a good night’s sleep! –

By Gracie Lawson and Gracie Watkins.

CANBERRA On the 18th of September, Year 6 set off to visit the capital city of Australia,

Canberra. After what seemed like weeks on a bus (5.5 hours), we arrived

at our first destination, The National Exhibition Centre. Here we learnt

about the layout of Canberra and why the location was chosen to be the

nations capital. Our excursion was jam packed with engaging, fun and

memorable experiences. Some highlights included; Parliament House,

where we learned how to change a law, by role playing the passing of a bill

on "Sports in schools". Questacon, the national science and technology

centre, with more than 200 interactive exhibits relating to science and

technology, including ‘Free Fall’. This exhibit enabled us to experience the

body’s natural fear response, as well as a very brief moment of

weightlessness. So much fun!

The Australian war memorial. We were humbled by this visit to such

an important building, holding the memories of soilders past and present

during times of war. The Discovery Zone featured five environments

inspired by Australia’s military history. Here we experienced what it felt like

to be in an Iroquois helicopter hovering in a field in Vietnam. We

also boarded an Oberon Class submarine and used the advanced

technology on board to search for enemy targets. Before departing

the War Memorial, we attended a moving Last Post Ceremony,

where we heard the story behind one of the names on the Roll of

Honour which lists more than 102,000 Australians who have given

their lives in war.

The National Dinosaur Museum, took us back to the Mesozoic

Era, a time between 230 and 65 million years ago. This dynamic

history trip was brought to life with the help of full skeletons, skulls,

more than 50 lifelike model dinosaurs, as well as robotic dinosaurs

that move, roar, blink, and breathe. Each of the three days and two

nights were crammed with adventures and discoveries. We had an

amazing time exploring our nation's capital and making memories

that are sure to last a lifetime.

SCHOOL STUDENT TRANSPORT SCHEME Applications for 2018 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) and Term Bus Pass (TBP) travel entitlements are

now open.

In coming days students who hold an SSTS entitlement and are changing grade bands i.e. going from year 2 to 3 or

year 6 to 7 and changing school, and students whose entitlement was approved under a medical condition, will

receive notification by email or post informing them of the pending expiry of their entitlement. TBP holders will also

receive notification.

Parents enquiring about pending cancellations are advised to go online to

https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails to update details/make application for next year’s entitlement.

Applications need to be made before 31 December 2017 to ensure students entitlements are updated and their

current card is not cancelled. If an application is made after the expiry of their entitlement (31 December) the system

will automatically cancel their card and a new one will need to be issued.

Please note: Students who are changing grade band and are remaining at the same school will not receive

notification and do not need to reapply (the system now automatically validates a student’s on-going eligibility if at

the same school and going from infants to primary or primary to secondary). Where a student meets the new

eligibility the system will automatically update their entitlement and card.

Students in the Opal area applying for a SSTS or TBP entitlement for the first time will receive their card (posted to

the nominated address) a week or two before the commencement of 2018 classes. New cards for 2018 are not

posted in 2017 or during the Christmas / New Year period.

SYDNEY NORTH ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Several students from Kanwal P.S represented our

school and the Wallarah Zone at the Sydney North

Athletics Carnival.

From all reports, everyone competed at a high level. It

was great to see so many students qualifying for this

carnival and every single one of them should be very

proud of themselves.

A special mention to Grace Dahan and Kleo Lawson

who both are now part of the Sydney North Athletics

Squad who will now compete at the State Carnival.

Grace came 1st in the 12/13 yr Girls Long Jump and

Kleo placed 3rd in the 11yrs 100m. Congratulations to

both girls, and we all wish you the best of luck at the

state carnival.

Government Rebate

Students from our school have recently undertaken,

an education tour of the national capital. Students

were given the opportunity to participate in a variety

of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s

history, culture, heritage and democracy. The

Australian Government recognises the importance of

all young Australians being able to visit the national

capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship

education. To assist families in meeting the cost of

the excursion the Australian Government has

contributed funding of $20 per student under the

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program

towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the

school upon completion of the excursion.

Mr McPhan

Over the duration of Term 4, Year 5 students will have the opportunity to be nominated for 2018 Captains and

Prefects. Students can be nominated if they fulfil the following criteria:

Displaying good leadership skills.

Demonstrating expected behaviour of Kanwal School students- Safe, Respectful and Responsible.

Wearing full school uniform at all times and worn appropriately.

Showing a willingness to assist at all times.

Being a role model in the classroom, playground and when representing the school.

Taking responsibility for their actions.

Participating in school events.

Over the next three weeks, students will participate in a Young Leaders Program. These sessions are aimed to

develop personal leadership skills where students learn the behaviours of being a great role model.

ATTENDANCE

Don’t forget your note or call the school.

For the benefit of all children, parents or carers should

ensure their child attends school regularly. Any

absence from school should be explained within

seven days of the absence. Regular

attendance combined with a positive

attitude means…

GOOD RESULTS. Attend every day!

Attendance

A reminder that it is vital that students arrive at school

on time, ready to begin learning, each day. There have

been an increasing number of students arriving at

school after the bell without valid reasons for being

late. Where possible an adult needs to accompany the

student to the office and fill in a late notice.

It is important that all students who are walking or

riding bikes go directly to school in the morning and

home in the afternoon without diverting. Younger

students should be accompanied by a responsible

adult at all times.

Your Child’s Medical Needs

Information about allergies,

asthma, diabetes and medical

procedures in the last 12

months helps us support your

child’s health and wellbeing.

Please provide relevant

information to the school.

Please note: Information you provide will only be

used or disclosed in order to support your child’s

health needs or as otherwise required by law.

Just a reminder that the driveway to the teacher’s car

park is OUT OF BOUNDS to pedestrian traffic. Using

the driveway to enter and exit the school is VERY

dangerous. Please remind your child to walk in and

out of the school via the pedestrian gates for their

safety.

We appreciate your support in helping us make the

entry and exit from school a safe process for every-

Staff Car Park and Driveway

CAMP AUSTRALIA

Welcome back to term 4 to all of our families.

During the school holidays Camp Australia operated

Holiday Club here at the school. We had many families

utilise the service from Kanwal Public School and

surrounding schools. The theme these holidays was

Time Jump; children participated in creating their own

sports jersey, lego creations, making a group time

machine, dinosaur fossils, participated in a dance day

and enjoyed an excursion to the movies to see Captain

Underpants and lots of other fun games, art and craft

activities and sports. Every child had a wonderful time

with us here at Camp Australia and we are looking

forward to the next school holidays and what they will

bring.

We have a very exciting and busy term planned here at

Camp Australia. We will be planting seeds in our new

vertical garden, creating our very own worm farm, Halloween crafts and activities and Christmas activities

too.

We are excited about this term and can’t wait to have

some fun with your children.

The 2018 School Year We are certainly at the busy end of the year and

there is a great deal of planning that is being

done to ensure we are prepared and ready for

next year.

It is vital that you inform the school if your child is

leaving the school to allow us to better plan. If

you are having an extended holiday and your

child will return in 2018 but not in the first two

weeks we also need this information in writing as

soon as possible. Your assistance in this will

help up better plan for a smooth start to 2018.
