Safe Entry into Confined Spaces

How to work safely in low risk confined spaces, in which there is adequate natural or mechanical ventilation, where access appears simple and unobstructed, and there is no likely risk of flooding (for example meter pits, valve chambers and stairwells.)

Low Risk

Specialist courses are also available in environmental monitoring, risk assessment and

method statement production.

We are able to offer first class practical training in state of the art confined space facilities to prepare and train anyone who works in confined spaces, with re-assessment courses also available if required.

We offer a range of courses including Low, Medium and High Risk, Managing Work in Confined Spaces and Emergency Rescue – all with City and Guilds certification if required.

How to work safely in medium risk confined spaces, in which there is a realistic expectation of encountering a specified risk, including possible introduction of specified risk during work activity. It involves working as part of a team and requires use of access equipment, environmental monitoring and escape breathing apparatus.

How to work safely in high risk confined spaces when a specified risk cannot be eliminated or controlled to an acceptable level without the use of respiratory protection (breathing apparatus). Candidates will experience an environment containing one or more of the specified risks (fire / explosion; loss of consciousness from an increase in body temperature; loss of consciousness or asphyxiation from gas, fume, vapour or lack of oxygen; drowning from an increase in the level of liquid and asphyxiation of any person from free flowing solid). Entry to the confined space may involve complex entry procedures. It will entail the use of breathing apparatus (RPE).

Safe Entry into Confined Spaces

To impart knowledge and skills to those persons who may be involved in planning, organizing and managing work safely in confined spaces. This training programme is designed for those responsible for organizing and planning work activities within a confined space. The manager may or may not supervise the actual job. (Emphasis on hazards / controls, use of documents associated with confined space entries, use of environmental monitoring equipment, access equipment, escape breathing apparatus). If a City and Guilds certificate is required then an actual work base project must be undertaken and assessed.

How to act as a safety attendant (top man/woman) for high risk confined spaces. It does not require entry into confined spaces. It is about controlling the pre-entry procedures and entry into and out of the confined space, maintaining communications, and initiating and controlling emergency procedures. The role extends to interpretation, supervision and coordination for the team and work being undertaken in the confined space during planned work and an emergency situation. In this regard, the role is autonomous and pitched at a higher level than is generally seen of a traditional ‘top man/woman’. This is further emphasised when it is taken into account that in this role the candidate may also be responsible for committing a work team in potentially non-routine environments, which is a significant departure in terms of responsibility, skills and competence of the traditional ‘top man/woman’.
