Overseas Technical training

A delegation from the maintenance department was selected to visit an overseas supplier for technical training. Another two delegations were sent to Tanzania to conduct and evaluate a metal coating line of similar nature as Safal Steel.

ABB Electrical training: Megan and Deon attended a training session with ABB in India. Here they received specialist training on some of our equipment and were exposed to the ABB manufacturing operations. The trip was an eye opener for them and they benefited greatly from observing the global business practises in operation. Highlight – India as a country was an overall highlight, but the one thing that stuck out was the “cool, calm and collected road users” . They could not believe the high speeds the motorists travel at and the cool temperaments they maintained, considering the high volumes of traffic in India. Perhaps we South Africans should take a lesson from this, and decrease the amount of road rage on our roads.

*Deon GovenderALAF – Tanzania:Ed, Gabriel, Dash, Evert, Larry, Corne, and Marc went to ALAF in Tanzania to observe their facility. ALAF is a Group company, producing cold formed products, coated coil, as well as a roll forming operation. There was a significant amount of knowledge sharing and networking, and the relationships that were built will be of great benefit to both companies in the future.Tanzania as a country is beautiful with a lot of activity, and their hosts ensured that their trip was thoroughly enjoyed.

Many would have seen the notifications posted around the factory in an effort to create awareness regarding electricity consumption. An average household dedicates about 5% of its energy budget to lighting. Imagine what cost a business of our nature must consume and the hefty bill which needs to be settled monthly.

We all need to look at efforts to save the company money and currently lighting is one area of concern.

Our dedicated electricians are conducting a LUX survey which is the measurement of light, and looking at ways in reducing the need for lighting which in turn will over a period of time definitely save the company a fair amount. In future many high bay light bulbs will be converted to LED as LED offers the same quality of light output yet lasts 25 times longer and consumes less energy. Day/Night sensors will be installed in certain areas of the plant

Government has been spending a lot of resourcesin creating this awareness and there are many research studies where you can gain information and look at implementing the same cost savings at home.

A few tips on saving electricity at home:• Convert to LED as soon as possible.• Install Day/ Night sensors to prevent unnecessary usage.• Switch off appliances when not in use.• Turn off your geyser during the day – this is a huge saving ± 39% of your

electrical bill.• Insulate geysers and pipes this will help to retain the heat.

Play your part:Be conscious of this initiative and

where you can please
