Why did you decide to attend SAE Institute Los Angeles? To learn industry standard gear by very talented people. I had taken a classes at a J.C., but I wanted to take my education to another level.

Has there been a project that you’ve worked on at SAE Institute Los Angeles? Yes, that would be the session I did at SAE with Ralph Johnson (Earth, Wind & Fire), Dave Eckles (Berlin & Three Bad Jacks) and Dave Soto. With this track I won the 98.7 mix competition.

What artist/albums have been influential in your life? Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, Metallica, NWA, Grateful Dead, Eagles, Police, Ozzy & Randy Rhoads, Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols, Circle Jerks, Cypress Hill, Pantera, BB King, Miles Davis, Albert King, Steve Ray Vaughn Etc...

What career are you pursing in the music/audio industry? Mastering Engineer/Studio Tech, as well as work on producing my own acts.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the industry - who would that be? Unknown artists that are extremely talented and dedicated that could make it to the top with the right direction.

If money wasn’t an issue - what piece of gear would you buy? Manley Variable Mu Mastering compressor/limiter, Massive Passive, Fairchild 670, some API pre’s, U-87, U-47, Apogee Symphony I/O.

I grew up loving music and over time became fascinated with the process.Has there been a project that you’ve worked on that has been especially important to your creative/professional development?I’ve been fortunate enough to have had great jobs affording me the luxury of using amazing gear and being surrounded by incredible talent. No one thing was the most influential although I’d say working at Larrabee studios gave me access to a level of talents, both mixers and artists, that brought into tight focus how integral each job is to creating a great record.What artist and/or albums have been influential in your life?Among the most influential (without me knowing it) was Bob Power. My favorite records from the golden age of hip hop were his mixes. Even before I knew he had mixed D’Angelo, I gravitated to his work. From a production standpoint, Teddy Riley, then Timbaland and the Neptunes, for continually rewriting the book on how a record should sound. Also Nile Rodgers and Trevor Horn; stuff that is too numerous to name.If you could collaborate with anyone in the industry - who would that be?Probably Kanye West, he has a vision the likes of which we haven’t seen in a long time. Maybe Rick Rubin, although we hear music differently than each other, which I like.If money wasn’t an issue-what piece of gear would you buy? The entire family of Roland products from the CompuRhythms up to the TR and TB family of machines.When not at SAE you can be commonly found doing what?Working with Kuru, a group I play shows with in the electronic music world, and creating tools to build the future.What can we catch you listening to RIGHT NOW?SBTRKT,Yuksek,Lalo Schifrin,Trentemoller.

What genre of music do you focus on here at Truth Studios? Hip-Hop, R&B, Singer-songwriter, and Indie Rock.

Has there been a project that you’ve worked that has been especially important to your creative development?

Glenn: There hasn’t been a particular project, but certain producers I’ve worked with have definitely sparked tons of creativity. Guys like DJ Khalil, Boi-1da, Chuck Inglish, Swiff D and Polyester all have challenged me to take their song to another level and some of the methods I’ve used with them have become staples in what I do now.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the industry – who would that be?

Nick: Dave Pensado for Engineering, Dr. Dre as an Executive Producer, Jay-Z for a recording artist, Adele or Sade for a singer.

Glenn: Erykah Badu, Little Dragon, The New Royales, Kanye, Quardron, Joya Mooi, Yuna and Made in Heights.

Plug Ins vs. Outboard Gear. Which do you find more important to keep up?

Glenn: I’d say plug-ins because a lot of artists and producers are very savvy when it comes to using plug-ins, so they’ll already bring me a session full of them or ask for one in particular. New ones come out every day so I find it more important to keep up with them since we already own a lot of great outboard gear. I don’t see us changing up our analog setup anytime soon - Neve1073s, UA 1176, Distressors, Dangerous D-Box, etc.

If money wasn’t an issue – what piece of gear would you buy?

Nick: SSL AWS 948Glenn: SSL 4000 G Series

What sets your studio apart from all the rest?

Nick: Our atmosphere, our staff and abilities to create a healthy vibe and environment to be creative. We also help artists, producers and songwriters network together. We provide career consulting and help plan out their projects. We also have a video department to film sessions and help create content for artist as they work.

Glenn: Our backgrounds play into our uniqueness, as well. We’re two guys in our twenties who our artists can relate to because we share the same taste as they do – music, lifestyle, fashion, etc. As a boutique recording studio, a lot of business comes to us because of our taste and artists don’t really find that in other studios. Nick also runs a technology firm and interned/worked at a major label. I’ve done marketing for lifestyle fashion companies and worked in radio. Artists respect that and allow us to be more involved because we can multiply their network and help them in many other areas outside of the music-creation process.

SAE Awards Local Student the Experience of a Lifetime...For anyone looking to work in the music industry, attending the Grammy’s is the ultimate dream. While the Recording Academy may not always award the Twitter-consensus “correct” artist (as if there’s an objectively-sound pick in the first place), and the ceremony can at times be overs tu f fed w i th jokes , gags and performances that miss their intended mark, it deservedly still stands as the music industry’s greatest spectacle: a majestic evening cloaked in a wondrous and magical atmosphere that envelopes those present as they converge to celebrate the collective accomplishments of the most sprawling and creative medium that the world of entertainment has to offer.

For the second consecutive year, this year’s Grammy awards saw the partnering of SAE Institute and the Recording Academy to co-sponsor the Ultimate GRAMMY Experience, an opportunity for Los Angeles area high schoolers to win tickets to the Grammy awards. Four students from five local high schools were nominated by their teachers and principals to participate in the Ultimate GRAMMY Experience Recognition Lunch on the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus.

The day was filled with excitement as the four students were treated to a tour around the LA campus, a complimentary luncheon, and SAE/Lennon Bus gift bags including a tee-shirt, Native Instruments Komplete Elements 7, I.M. KING sunglasses, V-MODA in-ear headphones and more. The students also got to spend time on the Lennon Bus with Grammy nominated producer/songwriter Toby Gad and a surprise guest: Chelsea Williams, who serenaded the students in addition to announcing the winner.

The contest winner, Jamie Harrison, currently attends the James A. Foshay Learning Center as a senior. She writes her own music and plays the alto saxophone, piano and guitar. In addition to being an honor roll student and a member of the Tri-M National Honor Society, Harrison also serves as the Foshay Music Department’s historian and is a featured vocalist in the school’s jazz ensemble.

A huge congratulations to Jamie and the other contest participants!

GRAMMY WEEK

RECAP... SAE students spun D.J. sets throughout Grammy week spinning only Grammy nominees. The winning DJ got to do a set at our red carpet Grammy viewing party. "Thanks to SAE we as MINDCONTROL were able to play a Grammy party. Great time, people, and a nice addition to the list of events we have been able to perform at."

THE NAMM SHOW // JAN 19 - 22 , 2012 MIXERMAN & JOE MCGRATH HOST A PANEL IN THE HOTzone

On Thursday January 19th 2011 SAE Los Angeles made their presence known at the 2012 NAMM show at the Anaheim Convention Center. Pictured here are producers Joe McGrath and Eric Sarafin (Mixerman) discussing vocal recording techniques and sharing stories with the crowd. Eric and Joe held down a 2 hour panel, fielding questions from the audience and sharing wisdom from their combined 40+ years of experience in the recording industry. Moderator Scott Kieklak kept the conversation both humorous and informative, transitioning the two top-notch producers between favorite vocal recordings they had done to problems encountered on sessions and everything in between. 

Joe and Eric fielded numerous questions from the audience, ranging from highly technical questions down to basic questions about what mic to use for home demo recording with ease and gentility. While the two had differing approaches on many details, they both stressed the importance of the overall vibe for the vocalist and the unimaginable importance of the artists headphone mix. Both agreed that without these two factors to make the vocalist comfortable, getting a good vocal take is highly difficult if not impossible.

Young Guru, SwiffD & Glenn Gonda joined SAE Institute Los Angeles Students for an intimate seminar. December 13, 2011 / Los Angeles-- SAE Institute Los Angeles welcomed Jay-Z’s personal engineer, producer and official D.J., Gimel "Young Guru" Keaton, into its doors for an inspiring seminar and beat battle.

Guru joined the all-star industry panel with acclaimed producer “SWIFF D” (Credits include: Pac Div, Lil Wayne, Justin Bieber, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Dipset, Snoop Dogg & David Banner) and mixing engineer and BLP instructor GLENN GONDA (Credits include: Pac Div, Dom Kennedy, XZIBIT, Miguel & Talib Kweli) for an inspiring listening session.

The battle included Audio Technology student Ian “Woozy Collins” Nicol. “It is a great opportunity for up and coming producers to receive constructive criticism from established people already in the music business.  It is also a chance to see where you are as a "producer" compared to the others and evolve your sound.”

YOUNG GURUSEMINAR & BLP BEAT BATTLE

POWER 106 FM // SAE BEAT BATTLE //LAS PALMASDECEMBER 8, 2011 -- Hollywood, CA. SAE Institute & Los Angeles based radio station Power 106 partnered up to showcase some of the south-lands hottest up and coming producers. With over 54 contestant entries & 14 finalists, we summoned the help of Alan “Automatic” Dash and guest star judges, Mixing Engineer Glenn Gonda (Truth Studios), highly acclaimed Audio Engineer Claude Achille & Music Producer Calypso. Dr. Dre’s protege Slim da Mobster made a surprise appearance announcing winner Producer Paul Cabbin! All finalists received Native Instrument Komplete Elements and for the runner up and Grand Prize winner...their very own Maschine and a rare opportunity to play their beats to Dr. Dre (Thanks to Slim)!
