POINTS TO PONDER

Reflect on Sunday’s readings: Acts 1:15-17, 20a,20c-26; 1 John 4: 11-16; John 17: 11b-19

• Have you ever paid the price for the sake of the “truth”? Have you ever known or do you know someone who has paid dearly for “proclaiming” the truth?

• Why are institutions, businesses, and societies wary of the “truth” proclaimed in the Gospel?

• Have you ever experienced God “remaining” with you when you have most struggled to love?

• In what ways do you “not belong to the world”?

Sacred Hearts Parish is on Facebook!

https://www.facebook.com/sacredheartsbradford/ “Like” us. You will be able to keep up with all our events.

Next weekend the church

celebrates the feast of Pentecost when the disciples were strengthened by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Good News. As you leave church next weekend you will receive a piece of paper with a gift of the Holy Spirit listed. That gift will be your prayer for the week. Red is the color of Pentecost. Why not wear an article of red clothing next week?

Second Collection for the Seminary Next week’s second collection supports the formation and training of seminarians in the Archdiocese of

Boston for future service as priests. We are blessed that many are responding to the call to serve as priests.

Please be generous and support these seminarians on their journey toward their ordination to the priesthood.

For more information, please visit www.VocationsBoston.org.

Thank you Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped to make our annual Anointing Mass and Spring Fling a wonderful success. We are grateful

that Bishop Hennessey was able to preside at the Mass along with Fr. John and Fr. Ben. Many thanks to the Sacred Hearts School eighth grade young men and women for being wonderful hosts and helpers that day. All who attended had a very nice day.

A REFLECTION ON THE ASCENSION FOR 2018: “I” WITNESS NEWS

By Barry Mooers

So there I was, sitting in front of my TV around 10:00 p.m. last February 4th. I was trying to absorb the disappointment and

discouragement of yet another heartbreaking Super Bowl loss suffered by our New England Patriots. How could their defense have

performed so poorly? Why was Malcolm Butler benched? How could Nick Foles, a second-string quarterback, have outplayed the

G.O.A.T. in football's biggest game? As I sat there, I listened to some of the Eagles' post-game comments. Head coach Doug Pederson

said, " I can only give thanks to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me this opportunity. "Tight end Zach Ertz, who scored the

game-winning touchdown, said, "Glory to God, first and foremost. We wouldn't be here without him."

Around noontime the next day,I noticed two women in black walking up my street, knocking on doors and ringing doorbells. When

they reached our house, Sal greeted them by barking like a maniac and leaping like a kangaroo! Above the noise and the jumping, one of

the women introduced herself as Ellen and her companion as Alice. She asked me my name and then handed me a copy of The

Watchtower. With a smile they were gone.

Two men on one of sports biggest stages and two women on one of life's smallest, all bearing bold witness to their Christian faith. Our

Mass readings for this week also have much to say about witnessing. Last Thursday, we heard Jesus tell His Apostles:

"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses

in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth..." (Acts 1:9)

And today:

"Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent His Son as savior of the world." (1 John 4: 13)

And how these apostles would witness and testify! Some were crucified; some were beheaded; some were stoned. None, save one,

survived. How many Christians would follow them in martyrdom! There were the early Christians killed for cruel sport in the

Colosseum. In the Middle Ages, Thomas Becket was cut down in Canterbury Cathedral. Joan of Arc was burned at the stake as a heretic.

Thomas More preferred the axe to apostasy. Then there are those who gave witness through their words: Augustine of Hippo and the

depth of his theology, Francis of Assisi and the rebuilding of his church and Anthony of Padua and his oratorical brilliance. In our own

time we have seen Mother Teresa minister to the miserable of Calcutta, Pope John Paul II help cut through the Iron Curtain and - most

recently - Pope Francis shepherd his flock into the twenty-first century.

Next Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost - the birthday of the Church, when a few fearful fishermen became so enflamed by the Holy Spirit

that they went forth from Jerusalem and spread the Good News all the way to Rome, then the ends of the earth. This mission of testifying

to the truth is a mandate that is ever old, yet ever new. Like our forefathers, let not our testimony be timid or tepid, nor our witness weak

or wavering. Let our faith fly with the eagles, taller than any watchtower. If not you, if not I, then who? If not now, then when?

Let us pray:

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love.

Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created and You shall renew the face of the earth. Amen.

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that a novena is a nine-day period of prayer usually said to petition God or to give him thanks? The word “novena” comes from the Latin word “novem,” meaning “nine” (…though in our present day, novenas can last for longer periods). On May 10th, the Church celebrated Ascension Thursday in observance of when, forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended to His Father in Heaven. We know from Acts 1:14 that after Christ’s ascension, the disciples were gathered together praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit who then descended upon them at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), fifty days after Easter. It is believed that possibly those nine days of the disciples’ prayer between the Lord’s ascension and Pentecost served as a model for the first novena. Regardless of the actual origin of novenas, the Church today still encourages the faithful to use these nine days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost to pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in their own lives, in our Church, in our country and in the world.

Happy Mother’s Day

Your Mother is always with you. She's the whisper of

the leaves as you walk down the street, she's the smell

of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the

fragrance of life itself, she's the cool hand on your

brow when you're not feeling well, she's your breath in

the air on a cold winter's day. She is the sound of the

rain that lulls you to sleep, the colors of a rainbow,

she is Christmas morning.

Your Mother lives inside your laughter. And she's

crystallized in every tear drop. She's the place you

came from, your first home, and she's the map you

follow with every step you take. She's your first love,

your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on

earth can separate you. Not time, not space . . . not

even death!
