TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an “eye” in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the “birthday of the church.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

MISSION BASILICA TOUR
If you have a group that would be interested in having a tour of the inside of the Basilica, Hospitality Minister, Larry Larson can take your group on a 30-40 minute walk around the inside of the Church and provide
information on the history of the Basilica. To set up a tour, or to get more information, contact Aralu Moreno
in the Pastoral Center at 949-234-1360 ext. 360. The Basilica Tour is free of charge, but a donation to the
Mission Basilica School is encouraged.
Become a Wedding
Volunteer
This would require a 2 to 3 hour commitment one to two times a month on a Friday afternoon or on Saturday, assisting the Wedding Coordinator on the day of the scheduled wedding. Please call Aralu Moreno at 949.234.1360 ext. 360 or [email protected] for more information and to sign up for this very rewarding ministry. There is a special need for Bi-lingual volunteers.

Over the last six years our parish has made 661 donations at 27 Blood Drives. That averages almost 25 donations per drive. You, the parishioners of Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, have consistently supporting the Red Cross in their life saving effort in our community. Thank you for that support. We encourage our young adults or new parishioners to join us to exceed that average in our August 12th Blood Drive. The Red Cross has the ability to collect 30-35 units of blood each drive so let’s fill every unit they have. MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA:
Hoy llega a plenitud la PASCUA. Jesús cumple su palabra: “Os enviaré el defensor, el Espíritu”, y aquellos hombres y mujeres quedarán renovados y renovadas desde dentro, transformados/as, con un nuevo estilo, profundamente arriesgados/as. Esto es PENTECOSTÉS. Ésta es la fiesta del ESPÍRITU: todos y todas quedamos un tanto “locos”, “tocados” por su fuerza y entonces… entonces TODO ES POSIBLE: desaparecen los miedos, se esfuman las cobardías, el corazón funciona a pleno rendimiento, convirtiendo (al que “lo pilla”) en APÓSTOL y TESTIGO. Éste es el Espíritu de Jesús. ABRIRSE al ESPÍRITU es absolutamente necesario para ser testigo y seguidor de Jesús; sólo desde Él es posible “dar la cara”, cambiar, para poder ser HOMBRES y MUJERES NUEVOS. Es Pentecostés. Si quieres… ¡TODO ES POSIBLE!

En los últimos seis años nuestra parroquia ha hecho 661 donaciones en 27 campañas de donación de sangre. Eso promedia 25 donaciones por campaña. Ustedes, los feligreses de Misión Basílica San Juan Capistrano, han apoyado consistentemente a la Cruz Roja en su esfuerzo de salvar vidas en nuestra comunidad. Gracias por ese apoyo. Animemos a nuestros jóvenes adultos o a nuevos feligreses a que se unan a nosotros el 12 de agosto a exceder nuestro promedio en la siguiente campaña de donación de sangre. La Cruz Roja esta capacitada para recibir 30-35 unidades de sangre por campaña, llenemos todas la unidades. El Hospital de Mission Viejo, nuestro centro de emergencia mas cercano, puede utilizar las donaciones, especialmente durante los meses de verano. El Ministerio de Cuidado de Salud Parroquial y Los Caballeros de Colon.

Únete a nosotros a tejer bufandas, gorros y cobijas de oración para aquellos que sufren de cáncer y por falta hogar.
