The entire UCCE space is reorganized, reduced in size, and re-fitted with new, recycled furnishings. “Wow,” one of our long-time Community Club leaders exclaimed as she helped Jen re-stock the 4-H lending library. “I never knew all this existed,” she said as she sorted through curriculum to shelf and curriculum to discard. Wait, I wondered. How can someone who has been so intimately connected with our program for so long not know about the lending library? The answer, in part, came from another long-time 4-H volunteer who stopped by later that afternoon. “You know, the old space never really felt inviting,” she said. “It felt like we were to stay out (of the staff work area). And even if you went into the stacks (of books), it was hard to sort through things to find what you wanted.” Having spent a fair amount of time looking for things in the library myself, I certainly understood that! But these statements also troubled me for what they said about how our volunteers feel when they come into our 4-H office, and in turn, their link to our program. “Uninviting” is a powerful word that certainly doesn’t promote teamwork and partnership, two central goals in building a strong program together. More than you may realize, the 4-H staff desires a close connection with you, the volunteers, parents and youth who make our program real; who make our program happen. I’ve written before about creating a welcoming environment in 4-H. People needn’t feel like outsiders when checking out our programs; we should have the welcome mats out! Those of us already a part of the organization are often blinded to the ways—many of them small—that make it difficult for new people to join. Kind of like the way our volunteers felt when they entered the 4-H office: I had no idea it felt uninviting. Jen and I know a welcoming setting is about more than arranging furniture. It’s about how we treat our visitors in every interaction we have. The 4-H staff has tried hard to make the new 4-H environment feel more accessible, welcoming, more shared. We know that creating a feeling of inclusion in our 4-H community begins with our office, and we promise to work—best we can—to make that happen. So, come see our new paint, our new furniture, our new layout. We hope when you visit you’ll notice a change, too, and that you feel welcomed and comfortable in a space we share. New 4-H Volunteers Orientation

Sacramento County 4-H Record Book Judging

Saturday, August 9 9:00 a.m.— 2:00 p.m. UCCE 4-H Office It is the time of year to wrap up all that has been accomplished by our youth members for 2013-14 and compile it into a record book. Record Books will be due to the 4-H Office by Monday, August 4. This allows enough time to make sure we will be able to arrange for enough volunteers from each club. If a club does not provide the judges needed, the books submitted from that club are at risk of not being judged. As in previous years, each club is to provide one judge per three record books turned in. Senior 4-H members, parents, and volunteers are welcome to come and help judge record books. Qualifications for entering your 4-H Record Book in the Sacramento County Competition:

Member must have completed at least their second year in 4-H (primary years do not count). Member must have earned at least a bronze star rank. Member must have received a goal seal on their record book at the club level judging this year. The gold seal received at club level judging must be affixed to the book and dated. Signed club judging form to be submitted with the record book.

For any questions or interest in helping with record book judging, please contact Jen Henkens.

Tuesday, August 26 Thursday, September 25 Wednesday, November 12 6:00-9:00 p.m. 6-6:30 p.m. Help with online registration if needed 6:30-9:00p.m. Orientation

All new volunteers must attend one of our Volunteer Orientations. After completion of the orientation, necessary

paperwork. and fingerprinting, 4-H Volunteers can lead science and service projects; drive on field trips; assist at

either the county/club/project level; chaperone camps and conferences as well as “help youth develop a positive

self-image and to set goals” & “to respond as a friend and guide, rather than a director or dictator”

(excerpts from the 4-H Leader’s Pledge).

4-H All Star Report

Hi! My name is Emmie Phillips. I am 17 years old

and attend Pleasant Grove High School as a senior. I am

one of your Sacramento County 2014-2015 All Stars and

I am very excited to be planning many Hi 4-H and

other events for you this year. I have been in the Wilton

4-H Club for about six years now and I am very involved

in the Horse Project. I have always loved horses and

helping others, so 4-H was the perfect choice for me. I

am super-excited for a great year with many fun events!

My name is Brandon Brown, I am 16 years old,

and this is my twelfth year in 4-H. I'm from

Sloughhouse 4-H, and I wanted to become a

Sacramento County 4-H All Star because I

think that 4-H is the best way to expand my

knowledge of and service to my

community. This year I plan to lead an

Emerald Star Project centered around aviation.

There are two events coming up which we, your 2014-2015 Sacramento County All Stars, are planning. First,

we have our SLC Orientation on Wednesday July, 30, 6:30pm - 8:00pm at the UCCE Office. This is a

mandatory meeting for all SLC Delegates who will be attending the State Leadership Conference at UC

Santa Cruz in August. We will be reviewing the guidelines and code of conduct, and discussing other

important matters.

Next, Achievement Night is steadily approaching and will be held Saturday, October 4 at the Board of

Supervisors' Chambers downtown. This event will be from 7:00pm - 8:30pm, but you can arrive early to

enjoy some refreshments and spend time with your 4H friends prior to the program. Look for the flyer for

this event in upcoming issues of this newsletter!

The 2014 California State Leaders' Forum aims to rekindle our

capacity for inspiration and innovation. 4-H volunteers and staff from

throughout the state, involved in all parts of 4-H, are invited to be

inspired and strengthen our vision for the future of 4-H. State Leaders'

Forum is a networking opportunity and a fun weekend too. Join us to

refresh your 4-H commitment!

Each year for the SLF Silent Auction we find that items made by 4-

Hers are the most popular. If you know of youth who are clever and

wish to donate a hand-made article that is worth $10 or more please

"inspire" them to contribute!

Some of the best, most practical learning for 4-H leaders happens

here. You’ll come home loaded with ideas and activities and the

enthusiasm to implement them. Your County 4-H Program becomes

stronger because of your participation. You will return with a deeper

understanding of the 4-H mission, a stronger sense of what has to
