It is an opportunity to reflect on the fact that Christ gave us his body and blood as spiritual sustenance. The First Reading reminds us that God fed his people with manna and water as he brought them out of Egypt. Their faithful God did not abandon them. The Psalm connues on the same theme. God provided the finest food, gave peace, and through his word ensured that Israel could follow the right path. In his leer to the Corinthians, St Paul reminds his audience of the inmate relaonship between the bread and wine we partake in the Eucharist, and the body and blood of Christ. We are united through this one bread and form one body of Chrisans. (Second Reading). In the Gospel, Jesus explains to the Jews that his body and blood will nourish them spiritually. This food is not the same as the food that God gave Israel in the desert; what Jesus offers here is a way for us to be living in him and he in us. THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST, YEAR A - 14 JUNE 2020

CHRIST IS OUR FOOD AND DRINK

This Sunday the Roman Catholic church celebrates the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, traditionally known by its Latin name Corpus Christi. It is an opportunity to reflect on the fact that Christ gave us his body and blood as spiritual sustenance. The First Reading reminds us that God fed his people with manna and water as he brought them out of Egypt. Their faithful God did not abandon them. The Psalm continues on the same theme. EVER ANCIENT, EVER NEW (Quotes from the past) In the Old Covenant there were the loaves of proposition [the Bread of the Presence], but they, being of the Old Covenant, have come to an end. In the New Covenant there is a heavenly bread and a cup of salvation that sanctify soul and body. For, as the bread exists for the body, so the Word is in harmony with the soul. Therefore, do not consider them as bare bread and wine; for, according to the declaration of the Master, they are Body and Blood. If even the senses suggest this to you [viz, that they are bare bread and wine], let faith reassure you. Do not judge the reality by taste, but, having full assurance from faith, realise that you have been judged worthy of the Body and Blood of Christ … Having learned these things, you have complete certitude that the visible bread is not bread, even if it is such to the taste, but the Body of Christ; and the visible wine is not wine, even if taste thinks it such, but the Blood of Christ. -- Cyril of Jerusalem, “Mystagogic Catechesis 5-6,9”.

OUR PARISH - ALERT LEVEL 1 At Alert Level 1, it is important to remain vigilant in our personal health pre-cautions. So please: 1 Stay at home if you feel unwell or have a cough, a runny nose, or

any cold/flu like symptoms. 2 Clean your hands before coming to Mass. Sanitiser will also be

available in the church foyers. 3 Please be aware of the needs of the other person. They may not

want to hug, shake hands, or be too close to you. If you are feeling vulnerable, we can arrange Holy Communion to be brought to you. Please contact the parish office. While we have entered Alert Level 1, some of the liturgical practices that were adopted earlier in the year, remain in place for the meantime. 1 Holy Water fonts are to remain without Holy Water . 2 Sign of Peace will be spoken or by a nod, rather than by shaking hands. 3 Holy Communion will be received only as the Host in the hand. These guidelines will be re-evaluated as further health advice is given, or in one month’s time. The dispensation from Sunday Mass remains in place for this weekend. I know we all desire a full restoration of our rituals, yet at this time we are still advised to be cautious with hygiene.
