December 9, 2018 Second Sunday of Advent

A Message from the Pastor

Dear parishioners, Almighty and merciful God, may no earthly undertak-

ing hinder those who set out in haste to meet your Son, but may our learning of heavenly wisdom gain us admit-tance to his company. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. This is our Collect (Opening Prayer) at Mass this weekend. The prayer makes a contrast between earthly hindrances and heavenly wisdom. We are “to set out in haste” to meet Christ. Haste doesn’t have to mean care-less; good haste more likely leads to success when it is based in preparation and attentiveness. When something really matters to us, we prepare for it. What can you do today, this week, to prepare to meet Christ in various ways, and to remain attentive?

At this time of year, many of us are busy about sea-sonal activities like baking cookies, sending cards and buying and wrapping gifts. These can be done somewhat in haste if one is well-organized and prepared. But if you have had the experience of not having all the cooking in-gredients at hand, or having to wait in a long line to mail a package, then you realize why preparing is a good way to deal with the stress of acting in haste. An “earthly un-dertaking” is not necessarily bad, but needs to be re-examined if it hinders our desire or availability to meet Christ.

Here’s a “sneak peek” at the Collect prayer that will be offered next weekend at Mass on the Third Sunday of Advent

O God, who see how your people faithfully await the feast of the Lord’s Nativity, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them al-ways with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

Here we find the desire for the fulfillment of our waiting and preparing: attaining salvation, and in the meantime worshipping and rejoicing. How do we await? Patiently or distractedly? Passively or actively? Alone or in community? Selfishly or in service to others?

* Next weekend we have a major event that is a popular part of the Advent Season here at Guardian Angel parish: our annual Festival of Carols! Our choir and our chil-dren’s nativity pageant choir have been practicing and our special Festival orchestra is getting ready too! They are all ready to share this glorious event with us! We’ll gather in the Church on Sunday December 16th at 7 p.m. for a wonderful, uplifting hour of music of this joyful season. And as always – it’s free! So bring your family and friends – see you then! In Christ,

BETHLEHEM HANDICRAFTS

From the birthplace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Christian community is seeking your love and support through obtaining their handmade olive wood religious articles. These items will be displayed at the church after all masses next weekend December 15th and 16th. Your help can and will make a difference in the lives of your brothers and sisters in Bethlehem.

T R C I A (RCIA)

At the 7:30 A.M. Mass this weekend, December 9th, Fr. Charlie will celebrate the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Rite of Welcoming for David Kim, our adult Confirmation candidate.

David already shares our Catholic faith through Baptism. We mark this moment of his fol-lowing God’s continuing call to live his Catholic faith as he journeys toward completion of the Sacraments of Initi-ation with the reception of the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation during the Easter Season this year.

You are very important in this rite, for it is the whole parish community – not just his sponsor, Brian Galvin and the RCIA team - that welcomes, shares our Christian faith, and walks the faith journey together in the days and years ahead. Please welcome David into this process and keep him in your prayers.

If you are interested in learning more about the RCIA process please contact Fr. Charlie at the Rectory (201-327-4359) or Susan Brown (201-327-2360).

Join us for Guardian Angel’s evening of scripture and music presented by our parish during Advent. The Festival of Carols will be next Sunday December 16th at 7:00 PM in the church when our young people will join the adult choir with song and scripture for a beautiful Advent celebration.

Every year the Religious Education Office arranges for all of the students to attend a Reconciliation Service during Advent. On December 4th we had a Penance Service for the students in grades 3 – 7 and last weekend our very young students celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. This Tuesday will have another service at 7:30 for the 8th & 9th graders.

While this is a requirement for the students as part of the Religious Education program, it is hoped that regular participation in the sacrament of Reconciliation will become a habit long after they have completed their formal Religious Education. Families of the students as well as any other parishioners are welcome to join in these gatherings. There will be priests from neighboring parishes available to hear confessions at these times.

Next Sunday, December 16th we will offer Children’s Church at the 11:30 Mass. Mark the dates on your calendar and plan to join the little ones in our parish as they gather at 11:30 Mass for a special presentation just for young children. The dates are: December 16

January 13 & 27 February 10 & 24 March 10, 17 & 31 April 7

Christmas Eve Children’s Choir practice will be in the church on Wednesday December 12th and 19th from 5:00 to 6:00.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

2nd Sunday of Advent “And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of percep-tion, to discern what is of value…” PHILIPPIANS 1:9-10

Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship val-ues and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need.

BE MY WITNESS

Lectio Divina, Monday, December 17, 8 pm As we focus this week on John the Baptist, we hear "prepare the way of the Lord". Advent helps us to spend more energy on the promise of Jesus to be with us always, in darkness and light and be more aware of his presence around us. We are fortunate to be able to go to Mass, celebrate reconciliation, attend retreats and pray. I encourage all our parishioners to make time for a special opportunity to let the Word of God speak to them on Monday, December 17th, through Lectio Divina, led by Fr. Charlie. By then we will be a week away from Christ-mas. "Prepare the Way of the Lord.”

Special Noon Mass A special mass and a support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, NJ on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 12:00 noon. Our celebrant will be Cardinal Tobin. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the man/woman directly affected with the abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alco-holic or drug addict. For information please call 201-768-7565.

WEEKLY COLLECTION MINISTRY

The Collection Counting Ministry is looking for new members. The 3 teams rotate each week to count the weekly collections. The time commitment for each team is minimal - Monday morning for an hour. If you are in-terested in this ministry, have any questions or are willing to share your time please contact Chairperson, Frank Anello at (201) 934-1331. As the old adage goes..."many hands make light work"!
