Preamble

Bridges are lifeline structures. These are the most expensive structures of

railways and highways. Bridge engineering is a fascinating subject for civil

engineers. Bridge design and construction technology has been growing

continuously. Bridge building involves considerable amount of

forethought, planning, conceptualization and in-depth study, as it calls for

utmost economy. No risk can be taken in design and construction of

bridges. It is therefore necessary that an engineer entrusted with a bridge

work should have a good knowledge of various aspects of bridge

engineering.

Workshop on Recent Advances in Bridge Engineering

Objectives of the Workshop

Barring the design of Railway Bridges, the design of bridges by other agencies like state PWDs and National highways is based on the provisions of IRC 112(2011). If the reasoning behind the provisions of the IRC is well understood; both by the designer as well as practicing engineer, then quality of construction will improve. It is estimated that more than more than 70 % of the existing bridges have already crossed life more than 50 years, and they are urgently required to be inspected. Prompt action is required to be taken for their retrotting and rehabilitation. Failure in this regards is likely to lead to disasters one after another. In the present workshop it is therefore, aimed to acquaint the participants about some of the methods used to carry out repairs.
