SAARP TENPIN BOWLING REPORT

There were no tenpin games played in July.

Lighthouses at the Boardwalk started playing on Monday 2nd August and Baywest will start 9th August.

Bobbie Long advised me that Boardwalk Tenpin will close permanently at the end of August and that they will be

joining us at Baywest in future. This is exciting news to us as our numbers have dwindled and we will be thrilled

to have them playing with us every week.

Would just like to encourage all members to have the vaccination, as we have had ours and feel so much safer,

it’s like a huge load off our shoulders, even though we still mask up and social distance.

Players at Lighthouses contact Bobbie Long on 071 227 7035

Lighthouses play on Mondays. Arrival time is 10h20 and play starts at 10h30.

Cost is R15 per game.

Baywest also plays on Mondays. Arrival time is 09h40 and play starts at 10h00.

We are normally finished by 11h00.

Bay West contact Margo Schuin on 083 553 3415

Cost is R25 per game.

Lots of love and many blessings, Stay healthy and keep safe.

Blind and partially blind people are the most marginalised members of any community. Various forms of blindness impact their lives through the different stages of life from birth to becoming senior citizens. There being some 200 different strains of inherited retinal blindness, each requiring a definitive diagnosis and a targeted personal Eye Care Management programme as each disorder is unique. Of crucial importance is that The Retina SA PE Office team is bridging the gap between the patient, community and resources in the most marginalised communities of the Eastern Cape where there are poor eye care facilities and in many cases where such services and interventions are non-existent. Our networking and relationship building efforts with the Ophthalmologists at the state hospitals, eye clinics and eye care centres in the Eastern Cape has enhanced service provision to the poorest of the poor and patients and communities who would otherwise have been resigned to live with little or no intervention. Annually approximately 1200 people affected and impacted by inherited retinal blindness benefit from our support services. Our advocacy programme seeks to improve the living conditions of people who are blind and/or partially blind by advocating for educational opportunities, health care services, social security benefits, vocational training, and other health and social services. We work towards educating the public and service providers about Inherited Retinal Blindness thereby encouraging them to recognise the capabilities of the blind and partially blind to successfully join the ranks of tax-paying workers and consumers contributing to their communities and society. The Retina PE Office Team strives towards educating the public and works closely within the employment and educational spaces in order to facilitate the complete integration of the blind and partially blind into society on the basis of equality.

Page 5: SAARP SOCIAL COMMITTEE CLUB

The team, however, doesn’t stop there as we also encourage the blind and partially blind to speak up for themselves using our resources to give them a voice. The resources include workshops, webinars, social media groups and Mailchimp campaigns. We have small groups of blind and partially blind who meet monthly throughout the Eastern Cape using the mentioned social media platforms with a member of the Retina team as leader. Another service we offer is Eye Care Management. There are several reasons why a good management plan is vital, irrespective of whether you have an Inherited Retinal Disorder or not. Early intervention is essential and prevention is better than cure. Routine eye exams can detect vision problems before you are aware that a problem exists. We therefore recommend that adults undergo a comprehensive eye exam by an eye care practitioner every 2 years, and not just an eye screening acuity test, unless otherwise advised by their eye care practitioner or they notice there is a change in the way they see. Over the past 28 years the Retina SA PE Office have built up a Network of service providers and resources both Commercial and State throughout Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape. We believe that partnering with the right people provides sustainable solutions towards managing Inherited Retinal Degeneration. By involving our patients, their families and Communities, as well as keeping abreast of the latest developments in eye care management, we add value to all of their lives. With the rapid development of technology, the demands on our eyes are greater than they have ever been. Making sure your eyes are up to these challenges is essential. As the saying goes: “Your eyes are the windows to your soul” It turns out that your eyes reveal a lot about your health and overall well-being as well. Access to information is another important issue to the blind and partially blind community. Here we refer to modern information technology that has emerged as one of the greatest challenges to people who are blind and partially blind. To this end we offer tech workshops to further enhance their independence. Several very unique and assistive apps are available on smart phones for the blind and partially blind. These apps speak, recognise faces, read emails. The goal of these apps is to make the world more accessible for the blind and partially blind. During a year of unprecedented times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, non-profits and other businesses have dealt with waves of constant change and uncertainty. And at the Retina SA PE Office we are acutely aware of our role and responsibility in continuing to meet the needs of people with Inherited Retinal Disorders. The pandemic is challenging enough for sighted persons but doubly so for those who are visually impaired. All of the above culminating into eliminating the dependence syndrome by equipping People with Inherited Retinal Disorders with enough information, knowledge of self and available resources required to manage and maintain their vision so that they may lead dignified, productive lives and achieve every possible level of independence despite their inherited visual disorder. Our Strategy Being patient driven we have therefore come up with out of the box thinking and innovative ways to present our programmes to respond to our patients additional needs brought about by the effect that the pandemic has had on them while coping with restrictions on travel, lockdown requirements and health concerns. We are telling our stories via email campaigns and social media platforms, educating in collaboration with the media, empowering via skills development, occupational therapy Whatsapp and Zoom webinars.

Subject: RE: Momentum - SAARP

Hi Lynne,

I have been asked to explain our involvement with Momentum.

At the outset we are very involved with them.

We were previously a referral partner but now we are a full broker.

The difference is that we are now able to give a full broker service from our office instead of having it done by someone else.

We are still very involved with them and they are one of our best suppliers of insurance, we are now able to give better direct service to

our members.

The change is beneficial to SAARP and to our members.
