INTRODUCING ‘PITCHING IN’ – THE NEW PARTNER OF THE ISTHMIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

GVC is delighted to announce that the new sponsor of the, Isthmian, Northern Premier andSouthern Leagues - is Pitching In.

Pitching In, is a new Grassroots Sports Investment Programme that has today been launchedby GVC, the multi-national sports-betting and gaming group which owns Ladbrokes andCoral.

The partnership covers all three leagues that make up Steps 3 & 4 of the National LeaguesSystem, who market themselves collectively as the Trident Leagues.

England footballing legend Stuart Pearce, who played for Wealdstone FC for five years atthe start of his long and illustrious career, has been appointed as the official Pitching Inambassador.

Stuart Pearce, ambassador for the Pitching In programme, says:

“I am delighted to be taking up the role of ambassador for Pitching In, as I’m passionate aboutthe importance of investing in grassroots sports and in developing young talent. I started outplaying for Wealdstone FC before joining Coventry City so I understand how important fundingis to the non-league game. Grassroots football is facing huge challenges at the moment andmany clubs are struggling to stay afloat. GVC’s Pitching In investment will help make a bigdifference to hundreds of clubs and thousands of players across the country.”

Pitching In has been set up with the objective of supporting, protecting and encouraginggrassroots sports in the UK through a range of initiatives.

In addition to financial support, a key focus of the partnership will be to facilitate andencourage members of the community to become volunteers, and do some pitching in oftheir own. A Pitching In volunteering scheme will be established to link GVC’s Ladbrokes andCoral shop colleagues with their local clubs.

In the weeks ahead Pitching In and the Trident Leagues will be announcing furtherinitiatives to provide financial support and opportunities for all the 226 clubs (rising to 240in 2021).

NOTES FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Good afternoon and welcome back to JML for today’s league encounter against theSwifts. Always a tough game and we welcome all supporters, team and staff today andhope you have a safe and enjoyable visit.

I was delighted to see the boys bounce back from the Cup exists with a win away atrivals Histon. A brace from Toby Andrews was enough to secure the points after atough encounter.

Taking of Toby, congratulations to brothers Jake and Toby for completion of the virtualLondon Marathon last weekend. Good job we never had a game!

With Man Utd desperate for a right winger I was sat by the telephone awaiting bids forToby after last week’s brace and this year’s play so far. My terms were tough, but had Ireceived an offer of a second-hand kit, a friendly game, a meeting with Sir Alex and SirBobby plus the season loan of two United lads the deal was on! To be sensible what awaste of time the transfer window is. Another glorified opportunity for TV companiesto over hype the build-up and event. The biggest deal was Arsenal dispensing with theservices of Gunnersaurus, their mascot!

Onto serious stuff our friends from St Ives have been struck with a covid-19 outbreakmeaning that the manager, with a confirmed infection, and first team players have hadto go into enforced isolation. Despite this their league has stated that their leaguegame must take place with whatever side they can safely muster. I have to say that Ithink this is madness and to put football above health is plainly wrong. If we areunfortunately struck with such a situation, I can assure all that we will not jeopardiseany individual and follow government rules to the letter. You can help us by doing thesame during your visit today. Please observe the 2m distancing rule, the one-waysystem and table service in the club and act as if you are infected meaning do not putanyone else at risk. We will beat this but only if we all pull together.

Looking forward to a great game today and wishing both teams luck but hope ourGreens remain undefeated at home in the league at 5pm this evening.

Come on you Greens

Good afternoon everyone.

Welcome to everybody associated with Heybridge Swift Football Club. I hope youall enjoy the game and have a safe journey home.

Since the last set of notes we have been involved in 2 local games away from home.Firstly, against a physical Histon FC side who we beat and played really well andwere worthy of our win. Unfortunately, we lost to Cambridge City midweek andafter starting the game well and taking the lead, we conceded a sloppy goal and tobe fair to City they probably deserved their win in the end.

We have Lewis Clayton back in the fold today and I’m sure many fans are aware ofLewis, an excellent player that will add intelligence and control to our play andClayts has put in some solid displays for us over the last couple of seasons.

There has been some very strange results in the league so far which shows thateven though we are still really early into the season, nothing is guaranteed in thisleague. I hope you all enjoy today’s game and hope that we can pick up some points todayfor you all.

Stay safe and take care

Erks

SOHAM TOWN RANGERS

A brief history

Soham Town Rangers were formed in 1947 as a result of a merger between Soham Rangers (Formed1919) and Soham Town (Formed 1920). The Julius Martin Lane ground, which at the time was thehome of Soham Town, is still the home of the club today, after it was purchased in 1952.

The new club started life in the Cambs League, also running a Reserve team. In 1956, they joined thePeterborough League where they were to remain until 1963. During their time there, they won theleague and the league cup on three separate occasions. A measure of the level of support enjoyed bynon-league clubs in those days was the fact that on their first home game of the season, on August22nd 1956, a local derby against near neighbours Ely City, over 500 match day programmes were sold- Unfortunately, the 6-2 drubbing for the hosts took the shine off the day.

The club joined the Eastern Counties League in 1963 and remained there until 2008. During this time, considerable ground development has taken place - The social club was built in 1968, new dressingrooms and showers were erected in 1979, along with a grandstand extension. In 1981, a lounge barextension was added to the social club. Floodlights were erected in 1983 and were inaugurated bythe visit of an Arsenal XI in front of 1200 spectators. A new grandstand eventually replaced theoriginal wooden structure at the beginning of the 1990’s, whilst various other developments havetaken place in order to qualify the club to compete at step four in the non-league pyramid.

Soham enjoyed considerable success in the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup during the 1990’s, winningit on three separate occasions, including for the first time in their history in 1991 defeating MarchTown United, before repeating the feat again in 1998 and 1999 against Wisbech Town andNewmarket Town respectively. The Greens were also the first winners of the Eastern CountiesMillennium League Cup, when they defeated Diss Town on penalties in the final in 2001.

The 2007-08 season was to be the clubs most successful season to date winning the Eastern CountiesPremier Division for the first time, beating nearest challengers Needham Market 4-0 on the final dayof the season to clinch the title in front of 680 spectators at the Lane, and with it promotion to theSouthern League for the first time in their history.

Page 10: Sa turday 10 th Octo ber 2020 KO 3pm PITCHING IN ISTHMIA N

In the first three seasons in the Southern League, Soham recorded finishes of 15th, 11th and 17th.At the end of the 2010-11 campaign, Ian Benjamin, who had been at the club for six seasons andwas in charge of the 2008 title winning side, stepped down from his position as 1st Team Manager.

Soham transferred to the Isthmian League Division One North for the 2011/12 season with formerstriker Andrew Furnell returning to take over as Player/Manager. However with the Greenslanguishing near the foot of the table, Furnell was replaced by former Histon Managers SteveFallon and Ian Hart in March, with the club finishing the season fourth from bottom. It was asuccessful campaign for the club’s other sides though, with the Reserves returning to the KershawPremier Division after finishing as runners-up in Cambs Senior A, whilst the Under 18s progressedto the 1st round of the FA Youth Cup, where they were beaten by Charlton Athletic in front of acrowd of over 500 people at the Lane.

The 2012/13 season saw Soham record their highest ever League position, finishing seventh in theIsthmian League North Division, five points outside the play-offs. Soham won the Cambs InvitationCup for the fifth time in their history in 2014 beating CRC 6-1 at the Abbey Stadium, but wereunable to retain the trophy the following season, narrowly losing 2-1 to Cambridge City in the final.Soham did finish the season with an accolade though, winning the Isthmian League Respect awardfor the second consecutive year having gone through the season having not collected any dissentpoints, which saw the club commended in the end of season FA Respect and Fair Play awards.

Following a difficult start to the 2015/16 campaign, Steve Fallon stepped down as Manager at thestart of October to be replaced by senior players Robbie Nightingale and David Theobald, whoeventually guided the Greens to seventeenth position before leaving to take over at CambridgeCity in December 2016. Rob Mason was appointed player/manager, and following a difficult start, finished the season seven games unbeaten, with the Greens securing their League survivalon the final day of the campaign with a 4-3 home win against Maldon and Tiptree, with two goals inthe final five minutes.

The last two completed seasons have seen finishes of thirteenth and sixteenth in the table.

Having run with only one senior side last year, the club reformed the Reserves and A Team for the2019-20 campaign, with both sides competing in the Cambridgeshire County League.

This season marks 100 years of football being played at Julius Martin Lane, with the club arranginga number of events to mark the occasion.

Heybridge Swifts FC

HistoryThe club was established in 1880 as Heybridge Football Club. After joining the Mid-Essex League they wonDivision One in 1908–09 and again in 1911–12. The club subsequently became members of the Essex & SuffolkBorder League and were runners-up in Division Two (West) in 1919–20. The club won the division thefollowing season, before finishing as runners-up again in 1921–22 and 1924–25. They later moved up toDivision One and were runners-up in 1928–29. The club went on to win the division in 1930–31, earningpromotion to the Senior Division. The following season saw them finish as runners-up in the Senior Division, aswell as winning the Essex Junior Cup.

After World War II Heybridge returned to the Mid-Essex League, winning the league and the Division OneLeague Cup in 1946–47. In 1949–50 the club joined the Premier Division of the South Essex League, but leftafter a single season. They returned to the Mid-Essex League and were champions of Division One (now theleague's second division after the creation of the Premier Division in 1949) in 1955–56, as well as winning theDivision One League Cup. The club later re-joined the Essex & Suffolk Border League and were runners-up inthe Premier Division in 1965–66. After finishing as runners-up again in 1969–70 they were founder membersof the Essex Senior League in 1971. They finished bottom of the league in 1973–74, but were runners-up in1980–81 and then won three consecutive league titles between 1981–82 and 1983–84. Following their thirdtitle the club moved up to Division Two North of the Isthmian League.

Heybridge were Division Two North champions in 1989–90, earning promotion to Division One. In 1994–95 theclub reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, losing 1–0 to Gillingham in a home match thatwas moved to Layer Road in Colchester.[4] In 1995–96 they finished the season as Division One runners-upand were promoted to the Premier Division. The club reached the first round of the FA Cup again in 1997–98,losing 3–0 at Bournemouth. Another first round appearance in 2002–03 ended in a 7–0 defeat to Bristol City.A sixteenth-place finish in 2003–04 saw Heybridge play-off with St Albans City for a place in the newConference South, but they lost 4–3. The club were Premier Division runners-up in 2005–06, qualifying for thepromotion play-offs, in which they lost on penalties to Hampton & Richmond Borough in the semi-finalsfollowing a 1–1 draw.

Heybridge remained in the Premier Division until the end of the 2008–09 season, when they were relegated toDivision One North. A third-place finish in 2013–14 saw them qualify for the play-offs, but they went on tolose 3–0 to Harlow Town in the semi-finals. In the 2017–18 season the club reached the first round of the FACup for the fourth time, losing 3–1 at Exeter City; winger Sam Bantick scored Heybridge's first goal in theproper rounds of the competition. They also finished fifth in the renamed North Division, reaching the play-offs. However, the club were beaten 2–0 by Haringey Borough in the semi-finals. The following season saw theclub finish fifth in the North Division, again qualifying for the play-offs. Despite defeating Aveley 2–0 in thesemi-finals and then beating local rivals Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final, the club were deniedpromotion as only the five eighth-tier play-off winners with the best points-per-game record were promoted, with Heybridge ranked sixth.

Ground

The club played at Bentall's Sports Ground from 1890 until being evicted in 1964 so a shopping centre couldbe built on the site. After playing at Sadd's Athletic for two seasons, the club moved to Scraley Road, formerlya carrot field, in 1966. A wooden stand was soon built on the western side of the pitch, becoming the WestStand. The stand was extended during the early 1980s, with bench seating also installed. In 1994 a coveredterrace was erected, but it had to be dismantled and rebuilt the following year after the local council had declared it unsafe.

The main stand was built on the other side of the pitch to the wooden stand in 1995 and has uncoveredterraces on either side. The Scraley Road end is an uncovered terrace, whilst the other end, the South Stand, consists of a covered terrace. The ground currently has a capacity of 3,000, of which 550 is seated and 1,200covered.
