Must not moan about the weather, must not moan about the weather, must not moan about the weather...

It’s been four weeks since I sat down to write the last intro and as always it’s been a busy four weeks.

There are a few articles this month that stray a little from the S40 community, one inspired by our holiday in Lanzorote. Our visit made me think about Chesterfield as a tourist destination and what we are doing to attract tourists. Interestingly this led me to discover more from John Burrows, Council leader, and Shaun Carrington from the Tourist Information Centre - find out more on page 22. I hope to bring you more on this in the coming months.

Then there’s this month’s cover photo of the recent event at Derwent reservoir, to remember the Dambusters war time bombing raid by RAF No. 617 Squadron - captured on camera by Andrew Evans from the Chesterfield Photographic Society.

I’ve had to postpone Will’s blog until next month, sorry to all of you who enjoy it, but it will be back next month and it’s a good one... I’ve already seen it!

On page 30 you’ll find an update from Brampton Picture Framing, another business that is going from strength to strength taking on new markets and employing local people.

Exciting news from Urban Canvas - who are exhibiting at the hallowed halls of the Saatchi gallery - so hip it’s untrue, page 28.

I’d also like to introduce you to Rebecca J Hall. Rebecca is a recent graduate in Illustration from Loughborough University who approached me to gain some practical design experience. So since April Rebecca’s been putting adverts together, updating spreadsheets and learning about the production of S40 Local. If you’re looking for illustration and design work apart from advert design, Rebecca may be able to help you out - please get in touch via S40 Local to find out more.

Select Interiors, the Oriental Rug Shop, has occupied a space on Chatsworth Road for

over 25 years, benefitting from and forming a long-standing relationship with our arterial road.

John and Pam Rhodes set up and have run the business from the start and have seen many changes. John stepped forward as a volunteer business coordinator for the Chatsworth Road Festival last year, with the remit of spreading the word and getting surrounding businesses involved. He was encouraged by the reaction of most of the businesses close by, many of which joined in and produced some interesting events for the festival, be it offering exotic tea and coffee samples or learning to play a musical instrument.

I caught up with John and Pam to find out more about their business and to find out about Select Interiors’ festival event last year.

Rug selling, like most home interior and furnishing products, sees a peak in activity in the Autumn - brought about by the change in seasons - being affected by the weather in our country getting colder, and people thinking about making their homes warmer and more comfortable as the cold of winter approaches, new carpets and rugs being readied in time for Christmas family gatherings.

And it’s not just the local weather that dictates the peak in the rug season. The production of rugs has a strong relationship in the countries of origin with the weather too. I was extremely surprised to learn “the

washing and finishing for Persian rugs, for example, takes place mainly in the summer months resulting in a different colour palette to those rugs finished during the winter months” explained John, “the drying process is dictated by the temperature of the sun which may be 40 to 50 degrees in the summer months.” And different markets also demand different colour subtleties, the Eastern market preferring strong vibrant colours, the West something more muted and toned down.

Fascinated by the many stories of weavers washing their carpets and rugs in the mountain rivers and streams, John explains that this is mainly a thing of the past and that the washing process today is more sophisticated. Washing out surplus wool and excess dyes, the process of oxidisation, further colour rinsing and washing, enables the finishing plants to achieve slight variances on the final colour palette, essential for the different global markets. John has experienced all this first hand on his many trips to Iran, Pakistan and India.

So with many rug manufacturers launching their new designs in the autumn, Select Interiors hold their annual Autumn Exhibition to celebrate and share their new stock and last year decided to move the exhibition forward to coincide with the Chatsworth Road Festival.

John explained, “The exhibitions centre around a theme. In the past these have included countries of origin, cultures, specific design styles, artisan Iranian rugs for example. The ‘Simply Red’ theme one year, featured deep red and burgundy rugs produced in Afghanistan. It’s a chance to showcase examples and explain the finer details of the wonderful art of hand made Oriental rug weaving.

Exhibitions have also included demonstrations by weavers and spinners from the Derbyshire Guild of Spinners and Weavers, which always prove interesting, colourful and enlightening

“Last year, to coincide with the festival, we decided we’d like to give something back to the community in which we’ve been happily trading for 25 years” said John, “We came up with the idea of a rug design competition and engaged Brookfield Arts and Textiles students. We invited them down to the shop where we gave the students some background in rug history, design and manufacture in the hope that this would help the design process - 12 designs were submitted.”

“One of our London supplier design teams selected the winning designs, and proceeded to have the winner’s design manufactured in India together with two smaller samples for the second and third place designs. The suppliers were very impressed with all the entries and the students had designs and samples of the experience to include in their portfolios.”

The winning designer, Sheena Ryder, shown in the pictures, was presented with a rug in her design and a second rug, of the same design, was raffled by the school raising in the region of £200 and donated to Ashgate Hospice and a School in India.

Was the involvement in the Festival worth all the effort? I asked. “The rug design project with the school seemed to pull many things together: Chatsworth Road, the community and local education” answered John, “we had an event already in place that we could tailor to fit into the festival, which meant we could easily get involved. We’ve got a great offering for people on Chatsworth Road, and it’s good to

see what we can achieve when we all work together.

“The design competition took us into something we’d not thought to do before and the result was fantastic. To see the quality of the designs and the finished product was very exciting, and we enjoyed forming a relationship with the school and introducing the students to the world of rug design and retail

- something I hope will encourage and support them as they move into further education or seek work”.

There are many companies providing windows and doors but I like to think not many can provide the unique products and quality of fit that we can. We are often asked to complete projects that others have turned down as they have deemed them too difficult.

“Our timber range is simply beautiful and immaculately manufactured - they keep the traditional look but have modern security features, making it nearly impossible to gain entry. The maintenance on them is also so minimal as there are certain design features built in that discourages the ingress of water.

“I’ve fitted some of our timber lookalike products with cast iron fittings and they look so authentic. We also supply traditional sliding box sash windows manufactured to the same standards and with a range of profiles from traditional to temporary.”

The sample windows I saw looked great - the wooden samples made me wish we’d not got a house full of uPVC!

It’s been a while since I penned a ‘Stoked’ article, ‘Stoked’ being a word used mainly by people associated with extreme sports.

To quote Privateer mountain biking magazine “The only

caveat in all this is that you proclaim your stokedness only whilst undertaking bike related activities. Being stoked on clearing a jump for the first time, good; being stoked on the free coffee from your coffee shop loyalty card, not.” However, I liked the idea and decided to use it to write about stuff I like.

I’ve recently been lucky enough to take a holiday in Lanzarote - not a holiday I expected to find returning from to write the next ‘Stoked’ article I have to admit. However what I found was a place where the vision and focus of one man has helped shape an island. The individual in question is artist and architect, César Manrique.

On Lanzarote if you’re based in a resort it will typically be a large development, but step away from these resorts and you see a landscape with attractions that maintain the island’s integrity and charm, places that simply aren’t the same as every other tourist resort.

is a Spanish Island, part of the Canaries. Its volcanic landscape is intriguing and beautiful. Formed about 15 million years ago, a fiery birth and the island now consists of solidified lava streams and extravagant rock formations.

It was this dramatic landscape that inspired Manrique, the volcanic landscape being the starting point for much of his architecture and through

amazing design he integrated buildings into the natural environment, creating spaces in which to live and work but delivering something I found even more amazing. For me it was like visiting a series of James Bond sets, numerous times I expected swarms of men in red boiler suits to be readying rockets for take-off.

For me, the single most striking example of César Manrique’s

architecture was not his home, which is now a gallery the ‘Fundacion’, but the Jameos del Agua. A jameo is formed when a volcanic tunnel ceiling collapses, the Jameos del Agua were subject to Manrique’s artistic talents in 1968 and opened for public viewing.

A winding staircase leads down into the tunnel, the waters are home to small blind white crabs, normally only found

at the bottom of deep ocean trenches. On reaching the top of the steps at the far end you are presented with a Jameo Grande, a roofless volcanic bubble 100m long and 30m wide, the centre piece of which is a magnificent garden with a fantastic swimming pool. Although I’m not sure if it’s still used as such but a dance floor and two bars were built into the niches formed by the rocks, I can only think that this would have been a night-club like no other.

I could go on, waxing lyrical about the buildings Manrique produced but it was his love of Lanzorote that also inspired me. Manrique was influential in shaping the island in the early tourist boom, he promoted a sustainable model that pursued the protection of the island’s natural and cultural heritage. The success of this model was a determining factor in the declaration of Lanzorote as a World Biosphere Reserve in 1993 by UNESCO.

His efforts are rewarded by the fact that Lanzarote didn’t lose its identity and traditional charm. He became involved in changing planning regulations to ensure new developments maintained and respected the traditional feel, so white low level buildings that don’t dominate the landscape have become a feature of the island and simple things like no roadside advertising boards - notable today by their absence.

This all got me thinking about Chesterfield. Our town has so much to offer, we’re unique, we have culture, history, a fantastic market which has survived and is, in fact, making a resurgence, as many rekindle their relationship with it.

don’t know that we’re within a stone’s throw of one of the most visited national parks in the world.

César Manrique didn’t stop development, but ensured that any new features enhanced and protected the old and existing elements that were worth protecting - the parts which make up our culture and history - and become the tourist attractions.

He made sure Lanzarote didn’t become the same as everywhere else.

Seeing such sensitive developments made me consider the impact future major schemes such as The Northern Gateway might have on our town, could our heritage survive such a development of epic scale, tacked onto its fringes? I’m told that the planned development of the Northern Gateway is more than this though, its about enhancing what we have, making Chesterfield a family destination in the evening, catering to an important part of our demographic that’s overlooked, a welcome boost to the local economy which sounds appealing.

Chesterfield is for me, first and foremost a market town, it has some stunning architecture, have you walked down Knifesmithgate recently and glanced up at the Co-op building and those close by? It does make me wonder what Chester or York would do with such buildings?

I think what I’d really like is for us to take a long hard look at what this town needs and start working together towards it and create a unique vision. We have to change, I agree, but we too have culture, heritage and community, make Chesterfield a destination that appeals to a wider audience and celebrate what we have.

“A modern contemporary place to visit that hasn’t forgot it’s heritage.”This statement is Chesterfield’s vision and is the mantra behind all activity within the Regeneration team at Chesterfield Borough Council. I met briefly with Cllr John Burrows, Lead and Executive member for Regeneration and Sean Carrington from Chesterfield Tourist Information to see how our town’s vision stacks up against César Manrique’s passion for his home.

John is Chesterfield through and through, born and bred here and very proud of his town and the fact that it continues to punch above its weight. “Ambition for Chesterfield is high, Destination Chesterfield is all about this, a group of leaders and business people that promote and seek good news about our town” says John.

“The problem with our vision is that it keeps getting kicked by reality” he explains, “we have some fantastic developments lined up but we need funding and businesses to ensure they are delivered. With banks not lending, it’s a hard time to encourage the right people to move into these developments.”

As we chatted the vision started to piece together in my mind - the Northern Gateway, the Market Hall, Chesterfield Venues, Coach awards... these individual projects and schemes are all linked and all play a part in the delivery of the vision.

Sean explained “the number of coaches arriving in Chesterfield has increased from 205 to 553 in the past eight years, tourists arriving are greeted by the Tourist Information Centre staff and given a brief introduction to Chesterfield and, if booked, are taken to the world renowned Crooked Spire for a private tour.” John outlined “the Market Hall creates a new contemporary space with facilities that will be utilised 100% of the time and not 25% like the old space and the Market Hall will flow into the outside space to create a great destination. The Northern Gateway creates an offer we don’t have so people don’t have to leave Chesterfield to spend their money. The Winding Wheel and Pomegranate now function as one venue, creating new opportunities to offer different shows and giving us the strength to attract high profile shows and acts”.

I was pleasantly surprised to realise that we do have a vision and the plans all work together to deliver it... and I plan to spend some more time with John to understand how it will work.

London Exhibition for Pete Barber from Urban CanvasUrban

One of Chesterfield’s best exports has to be Urban Canvas, the S40 based visual artists, modern mural painters and professional graffiti artists.

Last month, they performed one of their live projection murals as part of the Shoreditch To Saatchi event, with Subism and Liquitex. The first of the events saw a live-draw night at The Book Club, Shoreditch, where a selection of the finest UK street artists painted canvas’ live over the duration of the evening. Other artists on the night included: Dilk, Inkie, Miss Led, Waste, Mr Penfold, 45RPM, Oliver Munden, Rich T, Ventsa and Megamunden, with sounds from no-other than the fantastic Si Tew and Dave Brooks.

“Our canvas was painted whilst at the same time projection-mapped, to subtly fluctuate lighting, colour and 3d space. Following the Book Club event, the final painting was taken to the hallowed white walls of the Saatchi Gallery, where it was hung as part of the collective exhibition. We also performed a scaled-down version of the projection mural on the night” says Pete Barber of Urban Canvas.

Urban Canvas’ work can be seen in more local surroundings in and around Chesterfield including the girl with the roses beneath the footbridge at Queen’s Park and the amazing artwork decorating the businesses along Chatsworth Road.

I’m back in the office of Brampton Picture Framing talking to Liam Jacques and the team about the growth of their Brampton-based business. There’s a great level of enthusiasm for what they do.

The team at Brampton Picture Framing is now eleven strong and it’s about to be twelve as they are currently interviewing to take on their 4th apprentice in just

5 years. The apprentice will join Liam, James, Callum, Martin and Jonathan, working full time, along with part time staff Pete (the longest serving member of the team with ten year’s service), Rebecca, Lily and not forgetting the Saturday lads, George, Mike and Jacob.

Martin and Callum have passed their exams and are now Fine Art Guild Commended Framers. Both former students at Brookfield they joined Brampton Picture Framing as apprentices and are now aged 21, both in full time jobs as framers.

The successful adoption of the apprentice scheme has seen Jonathan working with them since June 2012, “Jono plays a vital role in the day to day business” says Liam, “ he will shortly be coming to the end of his apprenticeship and like Martin and Callum, will be offered a full time role.”

It’s really encouraging to see the apprenticeship scheme working so well for a business, allowing them to expand and grow but helping with funding whilst the new team member gets up to speed.

So what’s the secret to all this success and growth? “We are absolutely determined to provide the best possible framing related products and services and do it using highly bespoke and efficient IT. Our staff are well trained and highly motivated, we aim for 100% happy customers, every transaction, every customer is vital and is offered the same high levels of customer service. Our growth to date is down to sheer determination and hard work, tempered with a healthy balance of having a laugh too” answers Liam.

all corners of the country, one recently phoned whilst on the train from London heading to Newcastle, she got off at Chesterfield and came up to see us for 3 hours before carrying on her journey.

Brampton Picture Framing is developing new innovative websites, such as ovalpictureframes.co.uk a highly specialised website, which ranks number one in organic google results for searches for oval picture frames. Liam explained, “it’s hard to source oval picture frames in shops, we offer a unique service selling oval frames via mail order and we now have customers all over the UK for oval frames.”

James has a love of contemporary art and is a member of a close knit internet forum that specialises in limited edition pieces of contemporary artwork by people like Ken Taylor who’s worked on film posters for Quentin Tarrantino, artwork for groups like Queens of the Stone Age, Kings of Leon and Neil Young, as well as Banksy the world renowned street artist and Jeremy Geddes, a photo-realistic painter from Melbourne, Australia.

James started sharing framing advice online and as a result he has picked up framing work for Brampton Picture Framing from across the UK, “the artwork people typically supply, is limited edition high quality prints, people pay thousands for them, so it’s great to know they are happy for me to take on their treasured purchases. I love doing the work, picking colours from the piece, contrasting fillet strips, UV glass, I’m then able to create a mock up with our software package so they can see how the finished product will look before I start the job. People end up with a truly unique piece of artwork for their wall which is protected for years to come.”

To sum up, I asked Liam what was ahead “We are planning and working towards more growth, we are planning more and more high-tech framing related websites. We have got a really great team and we are all excited by the coming year.”

With an approach to business like this, it’ll be interesting to catch up again in 12 months to see how things are progressing.




Charles Paxton Markham, 1865-1926, was an enormously influential

Cestrefeldian: born into the Staveley ironworks dynasty; later to buy up Broad Oaks in Spital, where he employed more than 600 men in the Company that bore his name into the 1990s. And it was Charles Markham, philanthropist, who paid £5000 for the Markham Baths on Chatsworth Road, Lower Brampton.

When those baths opened just before the start of World War I, in 1914, there was widespread concern that many young people were not fit enough to be conscripted, childhood hunger and disease were rife. Working hours for children and their parents alike were long and poorly-paid. What we would now call slums had shared privies and no running hot water. Even 25 years later, half of Chesterfield homes were without a bath and pit-head baths were uncommon, a Hasland Miners’ Welfare block was built in 1923.

The grime of extraction, engineering and other industries, gas and railways too, was everywhere.

Board Schools had playgrounds but few had gymnasia or pools of their own, and the value of exercise for people of all ages was vastly underestimated.

Even so, Markham Baths attracted no fewer than 38,000 customers during its first summer: two-thirds being children, and that was despite the rather unattractive positioning next to the town’s electricity generators. The baths measured 75 foot long, 30 foot wide, and held 74,000 gallons of water. An

advanced round-the-clock filtration system kept water temperature constant at 76˚F (24˚C).

Darell Lacy, Chesterfield Football Club’s centre-forward and half-back, acted as Baths’ Superintendent up until 1930 – where he achieved a slender annual profit of 1/10d! Success of sorts came with so many customers turning up in the depression that many were refused entry, for fear of the overcrowding, that might have contributed to one boy’s drowning.

Markham Baths was never short of critics, described as dull and cold; useless for diving; water covered with grit; overshadowed by industrial chimneys, dark patches forming on the pool’s floor.

The main competition came from Manor Central indoor baths, latterly providing free swimming classes for 7,000 schoolchildren a year: opened by the Duke of Devonshire in 1919 and renovated in 1936; Whittington Moor - whose 1935 outdoor pool was far from town and very windswept; Ringwood Open Air; also Wingerworth Lido. A lot depended on where keen amateur swimmers, gents and ladies, wished to be based. Also, how smelly the water was, particularly at Manor Central where it had to be emptied twice or thrice a week.

When Inkerman Pool was functioning it had 76 swimming club members in 1931, rising to 153 in 1935: set against 142 Markham members, dropping to 39 by 1937 when the Town Council Bath’s Committee increased the Markham reservation charge from 5/= to 7/6d per hour. Untiring Outdoor Swimmer Godfrey Holmes peers over a gate near “East Midlands Electricity Board” and wonders if he would ever have swum there!


for Markham admission were 24,540 in 1930, 25,452 in 1936 : down from a peak of 40,802 swimmers in 1933! Stand Road actually overtook Markham in 1936, with 27,215 admissions.

As early as 1937, there was clamour in the town to build a new and covered, all-weather, pool. Many were the debates in local newspapers; many the discussions at town hall meetings. Lamp Caps, Donkin, the Tube Works, Robinsons and - ironically - Markham Works itself, petitioned the Education Committee to catch up with other towns and cities which had much better swimming facilities. But that Committee remained equivocal - it could not see adult participation in sports as its remit; less: its expenditure.

Why did 2% of Chesterfield residents deserve a projected 80% of leisure expenditure? Surely, nobody would want a café, artificial sunlight-room, and viewing galleries as well as a simple Lido? And why not get Royal Hospital to build its own medicinal baths? Also, draining the Tapton Links should have greater priority. Contemporary newspaper columns reveal a quite acrid debate.

£49,800 was the projected cost of a 100 foot x 42 foot pool (at Birdholme? or Rose Hill Estate?) that was eventually to replace both Stand Road and Markham Baths, before local opposition to extravagance, accompanied by the outbreak of World War II, kyboshed the controversial plan till nearly 20 years distant - at double the cost.

Eventually, in 1954, a site was found on Boythorpe Road for the much-heralded Queen’s Park Leisure Centre, it’s pool opening in June 1956, extra facilities arriving in 1972: themselves now obsolete! By 1975, the once-proud Markham Baths were disused - and no trace remains except that narrow passageway with a black gate next to 160 Chatsworth Road (next to the Lighthouse Charity shop).

Over the past two years you will have seen adverts for Robin Outram registered Osteopath. A couple of months ago these disappeared and were replaced with adverts for the newly formed Moorland Natural Therapy Centre. Garden Tips

Despite the slow start to the growing season, hopefully by now everything will have caught up, or at least will be trying hard to, so there’s lots to do.

1. Weeds are successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so hoe them out of beds or hand-pick if not possible, but keep them in check.

2. If you have fruit trees, you can improve the size of individual fruit by thinning out the buds. Quite a lot will fall anyway, but for eating apples aim for 1 bud per cluster, with about 15cm (6”) between clusters, and for cookers about 20cm (8”). Pears can be two buds per cluster, again about 15cm apart, and plums should be 8cm (about 3”) apart.

3. Lawns will be growing quite fast now, so will need a weekly cut. If you want to try to produce the sort of green sward often seen in gardening magazines, start a feeding program as well.

4. Once roses start flowering, they will need regular dead-heading to produce a succession of flowers.

5. Soft fruits – mainly gooseberries and currants – should be pruned now, as well as any spring-flowering shrubs.

6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can now be sown directly into the ground, to produce a succession of crops.

7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden.

8. Keep an eye on anything growing in containers, to make sure they don’t dry out (this is especially important with grow bags). Don’t rely on rain to provide the water, and remember that in a day’s clear sunshine plants transpire lots of water, so drying out the soil. It’s much harder to re-wet containers once they’ve dried out, as the water runs straight through.

9. Some early salads and herbs should be ready for picking; keep sowing them for regular harvesting.

10. Houseplants should be moved away from anywhere where they will get direct sun, and will need regular watering and feeding.

The Holymoorside and Walton Arts Festival programme includes a family history drama, based on genuine letters sent by Alva de Chiro’s great aunt Annie. Discover how this fascinating collection is helping to provide a continuing legacy for Ashgate Hospice.

Alva de Chiro has personally raised nearly £15,000 for Ashgate Hospice in gratitude

for the compassionate treatment and care received there by her husband during his terminal illness.

Italian born Biagio de Chiro died in June 2001 and, in time Alva decided that she might be able to help raise money for the hospice by giving talks to local organisations and groups.

Chesterfield girl, Alva met Biagio in 1957 at the Chesterfield Odeon Dance Hall. They married three years later and throughout their 41 years together Alva absorbed and loved the language, culture and culinary delights of Southern Italy. She developed her first talk to describe the customs and celebrations of her Italian in-laws and her experiences as she grew to learn about them.

This presentation and others including tales of Alva’s 30 years in teaching are well received by audiences throughout the Chesterfield district and beyond.

Donations made have funded many Ashgate Hospice projects including the purchase of tens pain relief equipment, electronically controlled chairs, exercise machines and a contribution towards refurbishment of the chapel.

Alva told me “Recently I was reflecting on how I used to be a keen letter writer - and an idea came to me.”

She explained “ When my mother passed away, I discovered she had kept a collection of letters sent to family members by my great aunt Annie. Born in 1890 Annie was the 7th child of the Larrad family of eight children and the only one who did not marry - remaining at home to take care of her ageing parents.

In later life Annie became a nun and moved away to a convent in Truro, Cornwall where she lived and worked for 50 years. She died in 1988 at the age of 98.”

“To keep in touch with her sister (Alva’s grandmother) Annie wrote regular letters in which she recalled their life when growing up together. The details provide a fascinating insight into the social history of the times, recalling the many moves they made throughout the North Midlands to find work and to improve their lives, as well as tales of births, weddings, puddings, the church fete, and a bad-tempered pet jackdaw. ”

The letters became the basis of a talk which follows the life of Annie Larrad called ‘A Veiled Journey’.

The dramatised version of the story ‘A Legacy of Letters’ is going to be

performed in the Holymoorside and Walton Arts Festival. A donation from the proceeds of the event will be given to Ashgate Hospice to help continue the legacy.

Gareth David is a 23 Year old Singer/Songwriter from Chesterfield. He’s previously released music as ‘Gaz Simmonds’ and is about to

release his latest 5 track EP “My Wife, My Cat and My Family”. Available from 8 June on CD from his website www.garethdavidmusic.co.uk - and on iTunes in July.

“I recorded the EP with a good friend of mine called Nick Allott. Nick’s recently converted his garage into a studio, so I was one of his first customers! It doesn’t sound all that grand, but I think that’s why I enjoyed making this EP so much. A few years ago I spent a fair amount of money recording a CD in Sheffield in a few studios, with some very good musicians, which was great, but there was something organic and homemade about this album which I think suited the songs and Nick’s done such a good job, you can’t tell it used to be a garage!”

“The band on the EP consists of a few friends! Electric guitars are by George Dixon-Gough, based in Chesterfield. And then drums by Lekai Lee, and bass by Henry Marsden, both friends I know from my time living in Oxford and both based in London.”

When he’s not recording Gareth works at St Thomas’ Church, Brampton overseeing the youth work, the worship team and also graphic design and it’s at the St Thomas’ Church Centre that he’s launching the EP on 8 June.

“I would probably class my music as a mix of Acoustic/Piano Pop! My musical influences being the likes of John Mayer, The Fray and Taylor Swift.

“This EP is different to anything I’ve done before. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s light hearted, fun and catchy, but at the same time the songs still speak about that which is important to me. That is why ’ve called it ‘My Wife, My Cat and My Family’. It’s been a year of ups and downs - I got married in September and gained some new family, but we unfortunately had to say goodbye to two of my Grandparents in November, and at the heart a year of being really being grateful for my family, more than ever before.”

266 cyclists took to the roads around Chesterfield on

Sunday 14th April for the second road bike event run by Dark and White. There were two options available - a 42 and an 80 mile route. Thinking that the beautiful local countryside might spur us on, four friends and I signed up for the long route. The challenge we were letting ourselves in for was greater than we’d anticipated.

After the sub-zero start to the year, this event seemed to be the first chance of cycling in decent weather. The forecast was promising, with double figure temperatures anticipated, but the ‘cloud’ on the horizon was the potential for high winds. The Sunday dawned grey and wet, but by the time we’d got kitted up, there was enough sun shining for me to ditch the overshoes and show a ‘bit of leg’ for the first time this spring.

We set off from Holmebrook Valley Park and the route got stuck in straight away, taking us up to the wild moorland roads around Fox House. If the up hills were testing, the down-hills were equally frightening: it seems that a large proportion of the nation’s two million potholes are concentrated in this part of

Britain. On some descents, such as the one down into the Rivelin Valley, we not only had to negotiate hairpin corners, but keep a vigilant eye out for craters that could swallow a front wheel.

Dark and White had done a great job with the signage and the feed stations were well stocked with essentials. The first stop at 20 miles gave us enough fuel to power us up to the high moors around the Strines where the wind kicked in with a vengeance. We were pleased to meet up with a local cycling club just above Castleton and cunningly used them as a windbreak to the top of Siggate Hill.

We had high hopes for the boost that seeing Chatsworth House after 53 miles would give us, but though the park may be beautiful, the landscaped grounds made the experience simply painful. Rowsley Bar was the last major hill on the route, and I have to admit that I resorted to walking a couple of times after being struck down by cramp. It’s always such relief when you finish the last big climb of a ride, the bike feels lighter and your legs seem 20 miles fresher.

These feelings of elation carried us a long way towards the finish and it was only during the final few hills as we approached Chesterfield that exhaustion began to kick in. It was great to reach the finish line, and though we hadn’t managed to complete the course in the sub 5hrs 30 required for a gold award, we did come away with a bronze. A nice touch that let us experience a small taste of that Olympic magic.

Four Belgian Spireites fans, who became friends at university, adopted Chesterfield FC as their team and decided to prove their loyalty by cycling to the club’s last game of the season from their homes near Brussels.

They also decided that, if they were going to go to all that trouble, they ought to raise some money at the same time - and chose Ashgate Hospice as the beneficiary (pic: staff showing thanks below).

From the Chesterfield FC website one of the Belgian Spireites, Sylvain Lecomte, explained: “We all had a fantastic adventure. We are so thrilled that we met our fundraising target and we couldn’t believe it that Paul Cook waited for us to arrive at 8pm - it made the whole event seem more special.”

The target fund was £1,866 which has already been exceeded and as I write stands at £2,160.32 so huge congratulations to the four. There is still time to support them, just visit www.justgiving.com/belgian-spireites

A new ‘Dads Only’ playgroup based in Chesterfield is providing fathers with the opportunity to spend some quality time with their little ones whilst also giving mum a well-earned rest.‘Who Let the Dads Out’ is a Saturday morning father-toddler group which meets once a month at Chesterfield Baptist Church.

Organiser Mick Roberts explains what it’s all about.

“If you’ve ever been to a mother and toddlers’ playgroup it can be a bit of a scary environment for a bloke to come into – mums, babies, nappy changing, breast feeding. It can be a bit much for some blokes.

“My children are grown up now, but when they were young there was never anything for fathers and young children to do together.

“So what we have tried to offer is something for fathers, or grandfathers, or male carers to take their pre-school children along to for an hour and a half to give them a chance to have some quality time with their own children and ensure that mum can unwind, or go shopping or have a break.”

The Group has grown from three fathers and the same number of children when it first met in February this year to nine fathers and 14 children at its latest meeting in April.

“For many fathers the bond between them and their children is not as strong as the one between a mother and child, often because dads simply aren’t around as much,” explains Mick.

“This is an opportunity for the dads to have some quality time with their children as well as meet other guys and make some friends.

“There are plenty of toys for the young children, as well as newspapers and magazines for the dads although most of the chaps are happy to talk between themselves.

“During the morning there is a craft activity for children, ably assisted by their dad or grandad. We also serve refreshments, including cups of tea and bacon butties for the dads and fruit and toast for the young children.

“The meetings last one and a half hours but that is flexible and in practice people often don’t want to leave at 11 o’clock and will stay for a while chatting.”

The Group is proving so popular amongst the men that they are even holding social events without the children including a midnight hike in the Peak District on Friday 14 June 2013.

Who Let the Dads Out is having its next meeting at the Baptist Church on Cross Street on Saturday 8 June 2013 at 9:30 am. It costs £2 per family for each event which includes refreshments.

et me introduce you to Victoria Crampton, personal trainer extraordinaire. Victoria has a degree from Loughborough and her level

three personal trainer certificate. She works with people from 16 to 80. She has had major success with people from all walks of life - from business executives and elite athletes to disabled clients and pre- and post-natal women. Unwittingly, I was about to be one of those clients. All this originated from a casual meeting in my shop with Paul Chapman and Victoria. Paul and I were bemoaning the winter blues and our lack of fitness. Suffice to say Victoria is now my wonderful fitness mentor who has cajoled me through my first month of personal training.

I must tell you about it. My first fear was whether my body, now surely a candidate for English Heritage status, could cope with this new regime. Did I have the time to devote to the workout twice a week? I didn’t know, but having said “yes” to Victoria, I was committed. Would I have to diet, give up my nightly glass of red and forego sweet treats from Tchar (conveniently located next door to my shop)?

I didn’t need to worry. Victoria had me organised from the word go. It wasn’t awful, it was fun. Even the part where I was getting extremely hot and sweaty didn’t put me off. I was introduced to new equipment I had never heard of, some of which I dread slightly now, particularly the kettle bell and resistance bands. The resistance bands are used as an alternative to weight training to enhance the exercises. Rather than going to the gym, where I would feel embarrassed doing the exercises, Victoria comes to my house and we use the back garden, my sitting room floor and the exercise bike in my kitchen. Victoria encourages me throughout our session, and yes, she does make sure I do 10 of everything and not 9, when I want to give up. She is a sweetie but, boy oh boy, does she keep you on the straight and narrow. After my first session, my legs were tender and my hamstrings were more like bow strings, making sitting down extremely painful. But two days later they were more relaxed, and now they have well and truly got used to my exercise antics.

The core work (that’s my middle body and back) is definitely the toughest for me - after all, that seems to be where we middle-aged ladies get our problems. Victoria introduced me to “The Superman” exercise. This involves lying on my front and raising my legs and arms at the same time. “Impossible”, I said, “I can’t do it”. Well, actually, I can. What’s more, I can do 10 at a time. It took a lot of patience on Victoria’s part but Superman and I are now doing reasonably well.

As for the diet and the red wine drinking, the jury is out. The chocolate biscuits and cake have gone, berries and yoghurt are starting to be exciting, but the glass of red still makes an occasional appearance.

It’s been tough, but I can recommend giving personal training a go, even if it just starts you off on a new exercise regime. We should, after all, be doing at least half an hour each day to keep our bodies trim and healthy. Watch this (hopefully trimmed and toned) space for the next instalment in my personal training development.
