WORD First Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 95:1-7(Please read responsively )- 8:30am only 1 Come, let us sing to the LORD; let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before God's presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to the LORD with psalms. 3 For you, LORD, are a great God, and a great ruler above all gods. 4 In your hand are the caverns of the earth; the heights of the hills are also yours. 5 The sea is yours, for you made it, and your hands have molded the dry land. 6 Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD our maker. 7 For the LORD is our God, and we are the people of God's pasture and the sheep of God's hand. Oh, that today you would hear God's voice!

T.P. for P.E.Thank you to everyone who contributed to our 2nd quarter toilet paper drive for Project ECHO. Following the June 30th worship, we delivered 504 rolls of toilet paper and assorted toiletry items. Our next collection will be delivered following worship on September 30th, so please keep the generosity rolling!

Food Pantry Needs Saint Nicholas contributes all year to the Calvert Churches Community Food Pantry in Prince Frederick which serves about 300 families per month. Although food donations are welcome at any time, we have designated the first Sunday of each month as "First Food Sunday" to help restock their shelves. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and go a long way in helping the needy in our community. Here are some suggested food items. Cereal,  snacks (Nutri-grain/granola bars etc.), baked beans, pasta salad, pasta sides (Knorr, Kraft etc.) Please place donations in the basket in the lobby.

Project ECHO Meal Many thanks to the Yott family, Ann Wolfgang, Tracey Lotz, Carol Blatt, Becky Watkins, Theresa DuBois, Sara Bowen, and Lauren Wawroski for preparing the September meal for Project Echo.  If you would like to help prepare the October meal, to be served on Sunday, October 27th, please sign up on the bulletin board in the narthex, or contact Kathy Dangin ([email protected]).

Girl BSA Troop 314 Clothing DriveThe Girl BSA Troop 314 will be having a clothing drive to continue raising money to purchase camping supplies.  We will be collecting clothes until October 13.  Bag up your bell bottoms and big collared shirts.  Pack up your paisleys and plaid pants.  You can bring your clothes to us at church or give Susan Vilcheck a call at 410-474-7023, to come pick them up.  The clothing will be going to a FUNDrive Fundraiser along with the things that didn't sell at the yard sale, where we will be paid by the pound.  We are also collecting shoes, bedding, and backpacks/bags.

Girl BSA Troop 314 Car WashThe Scouts BSA Troop 314 will be having a car wash on Sunday, October 6, during both services.  All you need to do is park your car and leave your key with us on your way into church.  We will give you a numbered envelope to track your key.  We are asking for any donation you wish.  Please place it in the envelope and give it back to us on your way out of church.  Thank you again for your generous support in helping our new girl troop purchase camping supplies.

The Red Words of Jesus – A Bible StudyJoin a Bible study on the Words of Jesus, often written in red in Bibles.  It’s a great way to read a gospel and really listen to what Jesus said.  We’ll start with the Gospel of Mark.  We will meet in the “new” Library in the small conference room off the fellowship hall.

Lunch BunchLunch Bunch will meet Thursday, October 10 at noon at Fujiyama in Dunkirk.  We hope you can join us for good food and conversation.  Please email Susan Vilcheck at [email protected] if you would like to attend.  Please also let Susan know if you would like your name to be added to the Lunch Bunch email.

BAG A BOOK FOR A BUCK!Books gleaned from our library are available for purchase.  Take a look on the table in the fellowship hall and select from new books, suitable for gift giving, as well as used books, and from children’s books to adult books. Leave your donation in the basket.  Proceeds will help pay for a new Bible reference series for our library.

Oktoberfest Grub! The food area for Oktoberfest needs a few people to help.  You can help at the food table by taking orders, handling the cashbox, refilling condiments and helping clean up the area throughout the day.  You can help in the kitchen by refilling the crock pots, ensuring the cold storage foods stay cold and keeping the kitchen clean throughout the day.  No cooking is required, all the hot food will be heat and serve.  Another way you can help is to loan your large crock pot for the event.  Please have it at the church by 10:00 am on October 5.  The festival is 12pm to 5pm.  We start in the kitchen about 10:00 am.  Hope to see you at this wonderful event.

OktoberfestOur biggest community celebration of the year is right around the corner. Invite your family and friends to our 4th Annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 5th from noon to 5:00. We will be enjoying craft beer provided by our friends from Ale Saints along with a variety of wines, German cuisine, live music provided by Kevin Sullivan, craft vendors, silent auction, games for all ages, and much more! Drink tickets will be on sale following each worship service. You can also order a t-shirt and commemorative stein for only $15. We are also looking for helpers for the day of the event. Please sign up on the bulletin board in

the lobby. Last year we raised $500 for Project ECHO and $250 for the ELCA Benevolence fund. Let’s exceed those totals this year! See Bryan Mullins for more information.

Art ClassesSt. Nicholas member, Byron Roger, is a professional artist and will be offering an art class this fall to congregation members and their friends.  It will be a series of classes that will end in a celebration/reception open to the public to showcase student works!Details are still being developed but it looks like a series of 4 to 6 classes one night every other week on Fridays.  He will cover basic art concepts, discuss his process, and art pricing (for anyone interested).  Byron is most well known for his printmaking (silk screen and relief prints).  As part of the class everyone will complete a relief print to contribute to the reception.  $40 each will be used for supplies and any excess will go towards the Creation Care Initiatives. Participants must be 14 yrs of age, you will be using sharp knives!  Also, we are exploring childcare for these Friday evenings. Please contact brother Ken or Byron Roger to let them know you are interested.

A Challenge to the Congregation from the Care for Creation Advocacy Team

The Care for Creation Advocacy Team would like to make you a part of the solution. We pray weekly that we would be good stewards of the environment. Our goal is to help make us all active stewards of creation. The ELCA has created a Social Statement about Creation that we looked to for guidance. It challenges all of us with the following; We challenge ourselves, particularly the economically secure, to tithe environmentally. Tithers would reduce their burden on the earth’s bounty by producing ten percent less in waste, consuming ten percent less in non-renewable resources, and contributing the savings to earthcare efforts. Environmental tithing also entails giving time to learn about environmental problems and to work with others toward solutions.Humans have produced more than 8.3 billion tons of plastic over the last 70 years and 91% has never been recycled. The problem is getting worse, plastic production increased by 40% over the last decade. Single-use plastic, designed to be used once then thrown away, accounts for about 42% of plastic produced each year. Our dependency on plastic is affecting our environment: plastic is made from petroleum oil, a nonrenewable resource, and the equivalent of about one dump truck full of plastic ends up in the ocean every minute. People around the world are beginning to take action. San Francisco Airport recently banned all water bottles, banned the use of plastic ware and plastic straws, and mandated the use of cardboard “to go” boxes. The patrons are expected to carry their own water bottles and to use the refill stations at the airport.

The Care for Creation Advocacy Team would like to take similar action here at Saint Nicholas. We want to help you tithe to the environment in a number of ways.1. We would like to purchase a bottle-filling adaptor for our water fountain. 2. We would like to give members of our congregation water bottles, reusable grocery bags, and reusable produce bags to encourage them to tithe to the environment. We would like to offer education opportunities to discuss other ways to help the environment.

To accomplish this challenge, we will be accepting donations through Noisy Offering during the children’s sermon, as well as donations made to the offering plate designated for the Care for Creation Challenge.
