HEAD COACH EZRA HENDRICKSON

Ezra Hendrickson was announced as an assistant coach on January 20, 2009, after completing a 14-year professional career, including 12 sea-sons in Major League Soccer. He is now the head coach of Sounders FC 2, the club’s USL team.

Hendrickson played parts of eight seasons for Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid, including three in Columbus prior to his retirement. Hendrickson appeared in 266 regu-lar season matches with 225 starts. Playing defense, he scored 23 goals and added 30 assists.

He also played in 32 postseason games with five goals and three as-sists. Hendrickson was a member of three MLS Cup championship teams, winning two with Schmid. Together, they won the 2002 MLS Cup with the Los Angeles Galaxy and the 2008 MLS Cup in Columbus. Hendrick-son was also with the champion D.C. United team in 2004.

A native of the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean, Hendrickson began his career in 1997 with the New York MetroStars, before joining the Galaxy later that season. He totaled six sea-

sons in Los Angeles, where he won the 2000 CONCACAF Champions Cup, scoring two goals in a 3-2 vic-tory, and the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, scoring one goal in a 2-1 victory. He was named Galaxy’s Most Valuable Player for the 2001 season.

Hendrickson went to Dallas in 2003 and began the next season with the A-League’s Charleston Battery be-fore joining D.C. United for its run to the 2004 MLS Cup. After starting all 31 appearances in 2005 for expan-sion Chivas USA, Hendrickson was acquired by Columbus in early 2006.

An All-American and business admin-istration major at Drake University, Hendrickson first played profession-ally with New Orleans of the USISL Select League (1995-96). After earn-ing his first international cap in 1995, he served 12 years as captain of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines na-tional team.

Hendrickson earned his U.S. Soccer ‘A’ Coaching License in December of 2008. He is a resident of Layou, St. Vincent, and has two daughters, Xavia and McKenzie.

“EZRA KNOWS WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR, KNOWS WHAT IT TAKES TO PLAY AT THIS

LEVEL, AND HE PROVIDES A GREAT BRIDGE FROM S2 TO THE SOUNDERS FC FIRST TEAM.”

-SOUNDERS FC HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMID

Following a tough loss at home at the hands of Tulsa Roughnecks FC, Sounders FC 2 (6-4-2, 20

points) is back at Starfire Stadium to face LA Galaxy II (6-4-1, 19 points) for the first time in club history. Much will be on the line as the match will be a top-of-the-table clash as S2 and LA II sit in second and third place in the USL Western Conference.

Although the teams have never met, the two organizations are quite familiar with each other as a strong dislike between two of the best clubs in MLS will now extend

to USL play.

S2 is 5-1-0 at home in 2015 (7-1-0 across all competitions), with its first loss coming last week against Tulsa. Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson chalks the 5-1 defeat up to an accumulation of minutes for the Rave Green team that has advanced through two rounds of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, requiring extra time in both matches to seal the victories.

“With all the games we have played and the emotions that have been involved in the matches, rilvary matches and overtime games, physically we just didn’t have it against Tulsa, “ said Hendrickson. “We started off brightly, knocking the ball around, but once they scored it took the wind out of us and we weren’t able to get back into the game.”

LA II comes to Seattle with a 6-4-1

record, winning six of its last seven USL matches. The team has played a bulk of its matches at home, and is 2-1-0 on the road.

LA II forward Jack McBean leads the USL in shots with 33, while Raul Mendiola leads the league with seven assists, and also has three goals on the season. Ariel Lassiter leads the team with four goals.

In the loss last week, S2 was missing many of its staples in the starting XI. Giuliano Frano has started in all but one game this season, while Andy Craven, Aaron Long and Pablo Rossi received a bulk of minutes as well. However, other well-known fixtures such as Damion Lowe, Oniel Fisher and Aaron Kovar were noticeably absent from the S2 lineup in the 5-1

loss against Tulsa Roughnecks. The average age of the roster was only 20 years old and included five current high school seniors and six Sounders FC Academy products.

Besides the Tulsa match, the mixture of players hadn’t seemed to affect the Rave Green play, however with two matches over the next six days, Hendrickson will likely lean on many of the younger players in one of the two matches.

S2 leads the Western Conference in goals, however LA II is tied for second for fewest goals allowed, achieving two shutouts with goalkeeper Clement Diop and one with Brian Rowe, who has played in net for LA First Team in its past three matches with Jaime Penedo on international duty.

S2 midfielder Sérgio has two assists in three USL appearances this season, and is continuing to find his form in the midfield. Amadou Sanyang presence in the midfield has proven crucial to the Rave Green, and with a week of rest, he could be a difference maker against LA Galaxy II.

Three months into its inaugural season, Sounders FC 2 has already made a strong state-

ment both in the USL and beyond. Currently in second place in the USL Western Conference and through two rounds of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup - the only remaining MLS-fielded team left in the competition - Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson has put together a team as formidable as they come with an average roster age hover-ing around a mere 20 years old.

“We are really proud of the way our young guys have stepped up to play this season,” said Hendrick-son. “With extra matches to play because of the Open Cup, we are glad to see some of our Academy guys able to play in a professional

environment with S2.”

In fact, so far this season more than 10 players 19 years old or younger have been on the S2 roster in either Open Cup or USL play, with a high of seven sub-20s starting in a single match for the Rave Green. However, age doesn’t seem to be a factor in the team’s success.

With a bulk of minutes for the young players coming in the U.S. Open Cup, the youngsters have only allowed three goals in two matches and directly contributed to four of the six goals in the first two rounds. Now, with two Open Cup matches under their belts, the group has earned the chance to face MLS side Real Salt Lake at

Rio Tinto Stadium, a park with a capacity of just over 20,000.

One of twelve USL teams to advance to the Fourth Round, S2 is the only MLS-fielded team to remain in the tournament. Despite many of them just graduating from high school, the young Sounders are ready to play in front of one of the largest crowds of their young careers.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime for these kids,” added Hendrick-son. “Not many players that age get a chance to play at that level, and they have earned it with the way they have played.”

With the exception of a handful of players, Tuesday’s match will be the first for many on S2 to face an MLS squad in a competitive match.

“The chance to play at this level is what we have been fighting for since the beginning of this tourna-ment,” said S2 forward Andy Cra-ven. “Everybody is on board, and we are excited to test ourselves against RSL.”

S2 kicks off at Rio Tinto on Tues-day, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. PT. The match will be live-streamed on SoundersFC.com.
