CLEVELAND, O., Friday.

The radio industry is receiving manyreports of improved business condi-tions. At a meeting of the Radio Manu-facturers Association's board of direc-tors at Cleveland, February 10th, coin-cident with the annual convention ofthe National Federation of Radio Asso-ciations, of jobbers and dealers, therewere numerous reports of better busi-ness during January, and also in fu-ture prospects.

Effects of last year's over -productionof radio receiving sets, according toindustry reports, are almost past. Theera of cut prices, due largely to dis-tress merchandise, is about over, it issaid, and with reduced production, nor-mal manufacturing schedules and dis-tribution soon will be reached.

H. B. Richmond, of Cambridge,Mass., prsident of the R. M. A., ina report to the board of directors, andalso in addresses to the convention ofjobbers and dealers and on broadcaststation WHK of Cleveland, told of the

One of the most interesting sessionsin the history of the allied radio tradeassociations, now known as the Nation-al Federation of Radio Associations,took place here during the early partof this week.

A substantial attendance material-ized and put in its presence at all ses-sions, while a special meeting of theMerchandise Committee of the RadioManufacturers' Association on Mondaypreceding the convention brought anumber of manufacturing executiveswith whom the conferees could main-tain contact.

On Monday the Federation meetingopened with official commentary byMichael Ert, of Milwaukee, as presi-dent and Howard J. Shartle, vice-presi-dent of the Ohio Radio Trade Associa-tion, welcomed those present on behalfof the Ohio trade. Mayor John D. Mar-shall, of Cleveland, also addressed thegathering, paying a tribute to radio

and Ray H. Bechtol, newly -electedpresident of the Ohio organization,spoke on the value of co-operation. Atthe Monday luncheon H. B. Richmond,,president of the R. M. A. and WilliamS. Hedges, president of the NationalAssociation of Broadcasers, were theprincipal speakers.

Reports from prominent members ofthe Radio Wholesalers' Association tookup the afternoon session, includingHarry Alter, Set Committee chairman;David Burke, Trade Relations; JamesAitken, Market Study; David F. Gold-man, Better Selling; H. E. Richardson,Accessories; A. A. Schneiderhahn, sub-stituting for chairman of Trade Rela-tions committee; Dr. George W. Alli-son, Chicago, discussed for the meet-ing "The Trade-in Problem"; David M.Trilling, of Philadelphia, spoke on "Fi-nancing Time Payment Sales" and E.A. Reutner, St. Louis, discussed "Uni-form Accounting and Cost Systems."

BUYS TEMPLE ASSETS,

TO OPERATE COMPANYCHICAGO, ILL., Saturday.

Leonard C. Welling, president of theK. W. Radio Co., Inc., New York, rep-resenting a syndicate of business men,has purchased the entire assets of theTemple Corp., this city. Accordingto Mr. Welling, the syndicate will con-tinue operations in the plant immedi-ately and will continue the use of theTemple trade name.

The purchase includes all patents,good will, trade name, machinery,equipment and merchandise inventory,which is reported to be well above amillion dollars.

Many of the former Temple distribu-tors throughout the country have al-ready applied for wholesalers' fran-chises and in certain sections, jobberswill be appointed, Mr. Weling stated.Several experienced radio productionand sales executives have already join-ed the new group, and it is expectedthat within a few days the plants inthis city will be in full operation.

Several new merchandising innova-tions will be inaugurated by the syndi-cate. which, it is said, will assurethe plants continued manufacturingthroughout the summer months andduring the "off season."

Mr. Welling is making his headquar-ters at the Temple plant here and ispersonally supervising all activities.

An expansion program involving theexpenditure of more than $7,500,000during 1930 is to be undertaken atonce by the RCA -Victor Co., Inc., ac-cording to a statement today by Ed-ward E. Shumaker, president of thecompany. More than $5,500,000 of thissum will be spent for the constructionof a new building, and mechanicalequipment including machine tools,small tools, conveyors and other im-portant items. The new building is tobe used for the manufacture of radioparts for radio assembly and shipping.In addition to this, over $2,000,000worth of equipment is being broughtto Camden from the General Electric

That the country is inherently pros-perous and willing to buy that whichit considers necessary for entertain-ment and education, is indicated in astatement made yesterday by B. J.Grigsby, president of Grigsby-GrunowCo., maker of Majestic radio, relativeto his company's sales of last month.Mr. Grigsby's report follows:

"Our company's sales for the monthof January were $5,368,788, which com-pares with $5,255,975 for the corre-sponding month of last year. Reportsfrom our dealers indicate that theirsales for the month were substantiallyin excess of the company's production."

H.Frost, chairman of the Association'smerchandising committee, both report-ed that liquidation of excess produc-tion, contrary to past predictions, wasabout over and probably would be com-pleted in a few weeks instead of a fewmonths, as originally expected. Refer-ring to the industry's difficulties lastyear, President Richmond stated that25 per cent. of the manufacturers havemaintained price levels, 35 per cent.cut prices, and 40 per cent. have be-come involve4 in financial difficulties.This, however, reduced the number ofmanufacturing units, President Rich-mond said, with production schedulesnow approaching reasonable prospec-tive demand. Chairman Frost, of themerchandising committee, reported thatdistress stocks were not large and hadbeen reduced greatly since December15th, with only a few more weeks ofliquidation in prospect. Chairman Les-lie F. Muter of the credit committeealso reported substantial improvementin industry credit conditions.

AMRAD INCOME FOR1929 WAS $290,054

MEDFORD HILLSIDE, MASS., Tuesday.The Amrad Corp., this city, reports

for the year ended December 31, 1929,net income of $290,054 after chargesand Federal taxes, equal to $3.63 on79,983 capital shares, against $182,179or $2.98 a share in 1928.

Personnel changes among prominentexecutives of several radio manufac-turers have resulted in several changeson the board of directors of the RadioManufacturers' Association. At theCleveland meeting of the board resig-nations were received from Vernon W.Collamore, formerly of Philadelphia;George C. Furness, of New York; A.J. Carter, of Chicago; Major H. H.Frost, of New York, and Jess B. Haw-ley, of St. Charles, Ill. Mr. Furnesswill continue service for the associa-tion as chairman of the Statistics Com-mittee. Major Frost also will continueas chairman of the MerchandisingCommittee, and Mr. Hawley as chair-man of the Show Committee.

To fill the five vacancies caused bythe above resignations, the board ofdirectors elected unanimously to itsdirectorate the following: A. T. Haugh,of Rochester, former president of theR. M. OUT THE SELFSAME DOOR

Last week's assembly of the National Federation of RadioAssociations brought together about five hundred sensiblemen, very serious about saving the radio industry and regard-less whether the business needs saving in the respect thatinternal deliberations can save or slay it. It may be doubtedwhether anything is radically wrong with radio traffic savea degree of indifference in public demand, due to inadequateand poorly -managed broadcast, and to this phase of the situ-ation the convention paid no attention. Over -production, pre-mature new models and tubes and foolish business policiesare evils, it is true, but trade conventions can do very littleto curb them and their harm, indeed, is palpable most whenpublic demand is not all that it should be. When business isbrisk, one hears any vagaries ofmismanagement that radio and every other business manifest.

Passing over the larger aspects of the situation, and tak-ing the Cleveland program and its participants at their facevalue, the event may be reckoned as well worth its cost oftime and outlay to those attending. Apparently the whole-sale distributive aspects of the trade offer the most specificfuture problems, as there were by several times more whole-salers than either manufacturers or retailers present. Thevery important role the distributor plays in radio merchan-dising, that of 'taking up the slack,' is a gruelling one justnow. Numbers of him were on hand at the Statler Hotel tofind out whither we are drifting.

The whole convention failed to ask, however, why noth-ing more interesting than Jocko Monk's Society Orchestra ina program of dance tunes is the chief attraction that a manbuys, practically for a year now, when he buys a radio set.Until consumer demand is aroused avidly by a great varietyof broadcasting, high lights of which have been mentionedagain and again in THE TALKING MACHINE and RADIOWEEKLY, business will continue so dull that fist -fights canbe started about an argument whether fifty and ten or fifty,ten and five is the proper discount from the factory.

It cannot fail to have been arresting to anyone studyingthe Cleveland picture that so many present were quite palp-ably enjoying substantial business, though the industry issupposed to be reeling from a succession of stupefying blows.Even such men as were looking for jobs, and jobbers as werelooking for lines, presented a cheerful front and-each withintheir own capacities-financial responsibility. A majority ofthose actively engaged in business received telegraph or tele-phone reports of daily sales and matters at home almost asenergetically as in boom period. There was no fear and littlenervousness in any man about his own proposition. It is thefashion, of course, to suspect or to profess to suspect thateverybody else's is sour.

Now, these are not the signs of a dejected or a degraded

industry. It would be gloomy, in the extreme, if signs of de-jection or degradation shówed. It is important to mentionthis for the benefit of such as were not in the phonographbusiness when radio came along, or in the piano business whenthe talking machine appeared.

The bugbear of liquidation is feebly waving its legs andthose who turned white at mention of it only a few weeks agoare asserting with a swagger that there is little or no moreover -production to be marketed. Some of them do not knowthat they imbibed most of their reassurance from this pagein THE TALKING MACHINE and RADIO WEEKLY, whichhas been about the only authority definitely and positively tomaintain that dumping would not greatly demoraliize the1929-30 season because production stopped among weak sis-ters when borrowing at the bank became a trick for Houdiniin October last.

Communistic, chauvinistic schemes for curbing futureover -production by periodic reports to a central bureau willhave to witness a great advancement in the essence of humannature before they work. It is no more likely that men willinform, for the possible edification of competition, anyone ofthe truthful and exact proportions of their operations thanthat they will split profits with competitors.

The best guide to proper production and guard againstover -production that commercial sense can devise will befound in experience and wisdom on the part of the individual.Output should follow credible estimate of sales, not sales anincredible estimate of output. The industry has passed thepoint where the wish for riotously profitable selling can befather to the thought of unbridled immediate manufacturing.

The remark of Mr. J. N. Blackman at one of the whole-salers' conferences in Cleveland to the effect that there aresome 2,900 distributors in radio, with a resultant of about131/4 dealers per jobber, has attracted comment from Mr. Mor-ris Metcalf, who writes : "If Mr. Blackman's figures were any-where near correct, it would appear that there is just as muchover -production of dealers and jobbers as of radio sets. Areduction of jobbers and dealers will mean as much in termsof profitable business to those who remain as a reduction inthe volume of radio sets will mean to those manufacturerswho survive the corrective process. It is not more sales out-lets that the manufacturer wants, but fewer and better ones,and it is the sincere hope of the manufacturer that the listsof recognized jobbers and dealers for the coming and subse-quent seasons will more nearly describe the respective func-tions of these two outlets than they have in the past."

The fact is that there are not 2,900 radio wholesalers.The example cited jocosely by Mr. Blackman was a trademailing list and, as everybody knows, a list of 2,900 namescan be sold at a higher price than a list of 900 names whichmight more accurately describe the field in terms of goingconcerns, well -rated.

Over -production of the retail and wholesale trades hasbeen prevalent since radio began and is only relatively less

onerous at present than eight years ago, though water is natu-rally seeking its own level. Quick results cannot be too con-fidently anticipated, in further decimation of the ranks, owingto the comparatively small amounts of money requisite forgoing into either the jobbing or the retail business and theconstant recurrence of new brands of goods seeking outlet.Just at this moment, several makes of product are on thehorizon whose avowed objectives are exclusive wholesalersand exclusive retailers. Does anyone imagine that hordes ofexisting jobbers and dealers intend, or even are able, to throwoff their existing obligations and espouse the new lines? Somewill, but to a large extent exclusive new representation ateither retail or wholesale will be drawn into the field frommen in other kinds of business to whom the new types of radiowill look good. Then the true and bloodiest battle for survivalof the fiittest in radio merchandising will begin. For everydealer who quits miscellaneous selling to become an exclusiveagent, someone will appoint still another dealer from the pres-ent ranks of the trade. It is clear that radio as a business isabout as stabilized as a soap bubble. There are no ipse dixitsfor clarifying the competitive struggle, nor patents upon aneasy way to quick success.

In a stage like the present, specialty industry like radioconsolidates its gains very quickly and some permanent bene-fit ensues if a wave of genuine and great prosperity can beswept over it. Then lines that have the capacity to do wellmake their affiliations formidable and it becomes just thatmuch harder for demoralizing forces to assert themselveswhen a lull has come again. Without the prosperity wave,corner -cutting competitive practices ranging all the way fromdumping to unwise trade-in allowances hurt everyone. Theonly way to set up a prosperity wave in radio is to put kickback into public demand.

I just can't refrain from writing you and congratulating you upon the won-derful editorials in your issues of February 5th and 12th. You certainly havethe radio situation as it now exists down pat.

The only trouble is that you are too lenient in describing the situation. Ihave been in the radio business since its inception, in the phonograph and pianobusiness for twenty years, but never in my experience have I seen any suchcondition as exists at the present time.

Eldridge R. Johnson, former presi-dent of the Victor Talking MachineCo., and a trustee of the University orPennsylvania, has made a gift of $250,-000 to the university, it was disclosedyesterday by Provost Josiah H. Penni-man. This gift is to further the endow-ment of the Eldridge R. Johnson Foun-dation for research in medical physics,which was established by Mr. Johnsonin 1927.

The gift forms a part of a $500,000contribution which Mr. Johnson is mak-ing in connection with the effort of theuniversity to meet deficits incurred andto provide it with an adequate endow-ment fund. His latest gift raises histotal for the foundation to $850,000.In addition it increases to nearly $2,-000,000 the amount which the formerVictor president has given to the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania.

CHICAGO, ILL., Monday.

The Zenith Radio Corp., this city,through Paul B. Klugh, vice-presidentand general manager, reports net prof-its for the three months ending Janu-ary 31, 1930, after reserves, royaltiesand charge - offs, but before federaltaxes, of $58,662. For the nine monthsending on the same elate the net profitwas $130,256.

Mr. Klugh reports that the unset-tled conditions which affected earn-ings of the corporation prior to Janu-ary have been successfully met andthat the month of January was thelargest January in the company's his-tory. Net profits for the past monthwere $57.502 as compared with a lossof $27,273 for the same month a yearago. The number of sets shipped lastmonth was almost three times as manyas a year ago.

The company's balance sheet as ofJanuary 31 shows an excess of currentassets over current liabilities amount-ing to $1,287,498. Cash on hand totaled$748,768.

During the nine month period, Mr.Klugh reports that the company hasestablished a modern cabinet plant,which, in addition to the two plantspreviously operated, gives the companycomplete control over the manufactur-ing of all elements and parts for Zen-ith sets and guarantees the preserva-tion of Zenith quality.

Mr. Klugh reports that the inven-tory consists entirely of raw materialwhich is being manufactured into thenew '60 line' of super Zenith radio sets.The company has no manufactured setson hand and is producing and shippingonly on definite orders from its whole-sale distributors, which are sufficientto give the company a satisfactory vol-ume in the Spring months. An inven-tory of stock on hand by wholesale dis-tributors on February 1 is the small-est reported during the last threeyears.

In commenting upon the future, Mr.Klugh said, "We are passing throughan era in the radio industry when itis becoming increasingly difficult forthe inexperienced to survive. Stabili-zation has come with a vengeance andthis makes the future of old estab-lished, solid and properly managed con-cerns like Zenith brighter than ever.I can see the radio industry's greatestyear ahead and Zenith proposes tomaintain its position of dominance inthe price field where superior qualityof products is placed within the pricerange of the average buyer. I expectto see the general level of prices ofradio sets sharply advance next Sum-mer."

Fada Engineering StaffFrank A. Ilinners, who has been

identified with radio since 1910, andformerly was president of the KingHinners Radio Co. has been appointedassistant chief engineer of F. A. D.Andrea, Inc.

His long experience as a set designer,engineer, manufacturer and productionexecutive makes him a valuable addi-tion to the personnel of the Fada com-pany.

For the past year, Mr. Hinners hasbeen a member of the technical staff inthe department of apparatus develop-ment for the Bell Telephone Labora-tories in New York City. Since 1915he has been a full member of the In-stitute of Radio Engineers and since1926 has been a Fellow of the sameorganization.

Frank A. D. Mr. Griffith was not un-versed in the Rotary ritual as he func-tioned as Talking Machine Rotarian inthe Chicago club during several yearsof his career as president of the Chi-cago Talking Machine Co. H. T. Grif-fith, president of the Udell Works,widely known radio furniture maker,has long been Furniture Manufactur-ing Rotarian in the Indianapolis bodyand he and Brother Bill may be ex-pected to cancel one another's votes onall radio matters affecting the Indian-apolis area.

2 New Record Cabinets

Are Introduced by UdellIndianapolis, Ind., Friday.

Two new phonograph record albumcabinets have recently been introducedby the Udell Works, this city, makerof radio furniture and cabinets. Oneof the models is a single door cabinetand the other a double door affair.Both are made of walnut.

The single door cabinet houses four-teen record albums and the double doorcabinet has room for twenty-four al-bums.

H. T. Griffith, president of the UdellWorks, which was established in 1873,is optimistic over the possibilities ofthese new cabinets.

Herman A. Linde, president of Tri-angle, and a Fada jobber for sevenyears, acted as toastmaster. He wel-comed the guests in behalf of the Tri-angle Radio Supply Co. and F. A. D.Andrea, Inc., Long Island City, N. Y.,maker of the Fada line, and told ofthe merchandising and advertising co-operation to be given to dealers thisyear. Mr. Linde predicted that his com-pany wil do its biggest job this year.The Triangle company was only recently appointed exclusive New York Fadajobber, the firm having previously beena co -distributor in the metropolitandistrict.

F. X. Rettenmeyer, chief engineerfor F. A. D. Andrea, Inc., was thenext speaker. He described the newmodel 40 and explained the new tuningdevice incorporated in this latest ofFada's sets.

The next speaker was R. M. Klein,general manager for Fada, who told thedealers of his company's sound finan-cial condition and of its substantialbank balance. "Our ten years in theradio manufacturing field have taughtus that in order to be successful in busi-ness one must have men and money,Mr. Klein declared. "I am proud at thistime to state that the Fada companyhas both these requisites."

Mr. Klein was followed by HarryWinsten, of Addison-Vars, advertisingcounsel for Fada, who outlined the com-pany's advertising plans for the year.

Others at the speaker's table includ-ed Frank A. D. Andrea, president ofthe Fada company; Louis J. Chatten,vice-president of Fada in charge ofmerchandising; Mrs. Herman A. Linde,Ralph Boland, metropolitan sales man-ager for the factory; Leo Altschuler,sales manager for Triangle, and JackGreenberg, credit manager for the dis-tributing firm.

The new Fada set was greeted withrounds of aplause when first shown tothe dealers, and those present were un-animous in predicting a fine sale forthis model. The set is housed in a wal-nut cabinet of Gothic design, withFrench doors of figured walnut. Ithas decorative side panels of matchedhurl walnut, wine glass high lightedlegs and an artistic speaker grille witha bold damask brocaded tapestry back-ground.

Its new features include an automa-tic station finder and indicator. Theset uses three type CX-324 screen gridtubes, two C-327 heater tubes, two typeCX-345 power tubes in push-pull andone CX-380 rectifier. I has a singledial calibrated in meters and kilocycles.The set has been approved by theUnderwriters Laboratories.

The Atlas Stores Corp. reports forthe seven months ended December 31,1929 a surplus of $979,757 aftercharges, taxes and preferred dividends,equivalent to $3.19 a share on 306,401no par shares of common stock out-standing at the end of the period. Netsales totaled $11,415,698.

WASHINGTON, D. C., Saturday.

A program calling for considerabledevelopment of the radio industry,within the limitations of the Five YearPlan, has been outlined by the SovietGovernment, according to informationfrom official Soviet sources, transmit-ted to the Department of Commercefrom Berlin.

The number of broadcasting stationsin the Soviet Union is constantly grow-ing. Beginning with one station inMoscow in 1925 the number increasedto 28 for the entire country in 1926,41 in 1928 and 65 in 1929, with 44 ofthese continuously active. Additionallarge stations are under construction.There is also a large number of shortwave stations in operation; these canbe set up by anyone, while the othersare run by the State.

The Five Year Plan provides for thebuilding of 87 new broadcasting sta-tions of 948 kilowatt total power, with101 subsidiary stations. A sum of 33,-200,000 rubles (1 ruble nominally$0.5146) has been asigned to this ob-ject in the Plan; of this amount 2,000,-

000 rubles are allocated to the greatKomintern (Communist International)station in Moscow.

The number of receiving sets is stillcomparatively small. In 1927, a totalof 200,000 crystal sets and 30,000 tube

are largely connected with loudspeak-ers in public institutions, workrooms,clubs, etc., and serve large numbers ofpeople. In 1928, it was estimated that326,000 receiving sets were in opera-tion, increasing to 400,000 in 1929, ofwhich some 10 per cent. were in cities.

Some 250 dealers from all parts ofIowa and Rock Island county, Illinois,attended the recent first annual Philcobanquet and meeting conducted at theHotel Fort Des Moines, this city, byHarger & Blish, distributors for thePhiladelphia Storagl Battery Co.,maker of Philco radio.

Philco plans for 1930 were outlinedto the dealers by R. L. Heberling, cen-tral division manager for the set man-ufacturing firm; R. W. Shepard, Chi-cago division manager, and V. E.White, Iowa manager. H. H. Blish, Jr.,of the local wholesale firm, explainedthe co-operative plans of his company,and C. H. Wilson, service engineer forPhilco, outlined the proper functionsof the service department.

During the banquet the dealers wereentertained by "Bill and Herb," the"highboy" and "lowboy" of Philco. Theentire Paramount-Publix stage showappearing at the local Paramount thea-tre, was transferred to the ballroom ofthe Fort Des Moines for the entertain-ment of the dealers, and at the con-clusion, the retailers were guests ofHarger & Blish at the showing of thepicture "The Love Parade," with Mau-rice Chevalier, which photoplay is usedin a national Philco tie-up.

has increased its scope and usefulnessoutside the home was indicated lastweek when J. L. Rey, vice-president ofthe RCA -Victor Co., Inc., disclosed thatduring 1929 scores of schools, hospitals,hotels and other institutions through-out the country had been equipped withcentralized radio apparatus for themultiple reception of programs.

Just as radio has become an indis-pensable part of home life, so it is de-stined to enlarge its influence outsidethe home, Mr. Ray said. "Radio nowcarries the pronouncements of nationalfigures and the lectures of leading edu-cators into the classroom; it heartensand comforts the sick in the hospital,and brings the convenience and goodcheer of the home to the hotel guest.The wide field of radio's applicationoutside the home is only now beginningto be realized."

Mr. Ray pointed out that educatorseverywhere are rapidly coming to ap-preciate radio's promise as a mediumfor supplementary education. Govern-mental recognition of radio as an edu-cational agency is evidenced in Secre-tary of Interior Wilbur's appointmentof an advisory committeee to study thisnew field and cooperate with its pio-neers. Broadcasters, too, are organiz-ing their efforts in this direction.Meanwhile, more schools are continu-ally being radio -equipped for the recep-tion of suitable program material.

SOUNDER MERCHANDISING METHODS PREVAIL

IN SAN DIEGO; CONCENTRATE ON FEWER LINESSan Diego, Calif., Thursday.

The tendency of dealers to take along look ahead, and make a determin-ed effort to correct deficiencies inmethods of operation, is becoming morenoticeable every week, as the seasonadvances. Haphazard methods are be-ing squeezed out of the industry byeconomic pressure. The most success-ful dealers are not trying to kid them-selves or anybody else. They freelyadmit that in the past much of thefailure to realize profits in the retailbranch of the industry has been due tooperating under a belief that thestrongest dealer would prove to bethe one who could make the most errorsand still survive. All -of -a -sudden prin-ciples exemplied in almost forgottenproverbs, such as "Look before youleap," and "Be sure you are right, thengo ahead," are being chosen as guidingrules of the business. As one dealerremarks, "I thought I was a good buyerlast year. This year I've had threefactories slide out from under me. NowI am ready to pay the price of stabil-ity."

The trade is coming to realize thatthis price is paid in part by soundmethods, kept up month after month.

The greatest current weakness inthe local market is over caution, anda tendency to lean too heavily on thejobber. The pii';lic is buying radio,and retailers vvID. are doing a real job

Philco dealers have been making avery active drive for business, usingheavy group advertising in the news-papers and special sales methods, inthe tie-up with the Paramount picture,"Love Parade," running here for eightclays.

Stocks of old sets taken on tradesduring the rush last year are apparentlymoving slowly, and absorbing energywhich is needed for pushing new mer-chandise. However, a number of deal-ers are rejoicing in being practicallyor entirely free of this handicap.

J. F. Duff, who travels San Diegoand Imperial counties for Leo J. Mey-berg Co., 1022 Wall street, Los Angeles,southern California Radiola distribu-tor, observes a distinct advance in mer-chandising methods since the first ofthe year. Dealers throughout the terri-tory are concentrating their efforts ona minimum number of lines, and push-ing them harder. Interest in windowdisplay improvement is widespread.Retailers are showing greater appreci-ation of information about trade condi-tions. They are taking more time toread their TALKING MACHINE andRADIO WEEKLY promptly and thor-oughly, watching for the news of theweek. Trade sentiment shows confi-dence in a steady advance which willmake this a good radio year.

Leo J. Meyberg Co. carries a stockof Radiola merchandise in warehousein San Diego, for the convenience ofretailers in this trade district.

R. C. Garner, manager of the radiodepartment at Holcomb's Auto Service,916 Union street, reports that theywill continue distributing Zenith, Boschand Stewart -Warner, having a goodclientele on each line, but convincedthat three makes of radio is enough forany house. This retailer has done wellwith Zenith, finding the name rateswell with the public, and price is nodrawback with rightly selected pros-pects. There are plenty of people towhom good, dependable merchandise isthe first consideration.

Mr. Gardner gives out his simplemethod of avoiding trouble with "joyriders." It is to ask an enquirer aboutradio right out if he is in a positionto buy, and actually intends to buy aradio. "Joy riding" would never havedeveloped if dealers had refrained fromshowing over anxiety to sell, and fearof losing a demonstration.

Charles T. Holcomb, proprietor ofHolcomb's Auto Service, has been dis-tributing Bosch radio four years, Stew-art -Warner three years, and is goinginto the second year on Zenith. Radiohas become an important branch of thebusiness.

Day -Fan distribution is to be pushedmore aggressively in San Diego andImperial counties, this year. Wholesalebusiness on the General Motors line isin the hands of a strong jobbing house,Electric Supplies Distributing Co., 435Second street. Walter C. Wurfel ispresident, B. Guthrie, purchasing agent,and Fred Goss, sales manager. GeneM. Cramer has been placed in chargeof radio sales promotion, as managerof the radio department. Set distribu-tion is supplemented by wholesale busi-ness in Eveready-Raytheon tubes, Mag-navox speakers, and protectors, insula-tors and all types of radio general sup-plies and accessories.

Supply Co. store across the street to4121 University. He is picking upconsiderable work for his service de-partment by locating eliminators whichcan be had for a price, and renovatingold battery sets.

General Electric Supply Corp., for-merly Pacific States Electric Co., withheadquarters at Second and Central,Los Angeles, operates a branch in SanDiego at 206 W. Market street, E. C.Lampe, manager. This prominent elec-tric supplies wholesaler confines itsoperations in radio to RCA goods ex-clusively, distributing Radiola sets andRCA Radiotrons and speakers in SanDiego county.

Several Atwater Kent dealers in theBaltimore territory have employed wo-men for outside sales work at the sug-gestion and under the supervision ofParks & Hull, Inc., Atwater Kent radiodistributors. These dealers are meet-ing with a uniformly fair degree ofsuccess.

Experience indicates that women ofmiddle age are more to be relied uponthan their younger sisters and as ageneral proposition do a better sellingjob. The bulk of their sales, however,are closed for them by a crew managerof the opposite sex, who works eitheron a salary or a commission basis andin some cases a combination of both.

Under this arrangement selling costshave been reduced somewhat under theusual outside selling set up.

VAN HORNE HAS NEWTYPE TUBE DESIGN

FRANKLIN, O., Friday.

The Van Horne Tube Co., this city,has recently completed development ofa new type tube design which is knownas the Van Horne "ring type" con-struction. It is in the form of a goldplated ring or band which is incorpo-rated in the tube assembly between thetop of the base and the glass bulb. Themetal ring acts as a separator betweenthe tube base and the glass bulb prop-er, and functions as a heat radiator.

Aside from the technical features,the use of the ring is said to make atube with more eye value.

Portland, Ore., Thursday.

After a recent trip through the north-west, officials of the Victor companywere so impressed with the progressivespirit and growing possibilities of thissection that arrangements were madefor the establishment of a direct fac-tory sales district comprising the statesof Oregon and Washington, and sec-tions of Montana and Idaho. This isin addition to the factory's distribu-ting houses at Portland and Seattle,which will continue to serve Victordealers as heretofore.

There are at present eight such fac-tory district operations in the country.The Portland office will be located atthe Northwestern Victor DistributingCo., Seventeenth and Irving streets,and is under the direction of F. C. Haw-kinson, who has been appointed north-west district manager of the Victordivision of the RCA -Victor Co., Inc.

Mr. Hawkinson has been a memberof the Victor sales organization fornine years. During the past two yearshe has been with the sales contractdivision at the factory's main office atCamden. He also has been districtsales manager of the southern districtat New Orleans, as well as having spentconsiderable time in sales work in themiddle west. Prior to his joining theVictor sales organization, Mr. Hawkin-son conducted two retail music storesin Illinois.

"With but six months of actual man-ufacture in 1929 sales were among thegreatest in the factory's experience.The nation-wide acceptance of Victorradio measured fully to expectations,and with the merchandising and salesprogram now being inaugurated, 1930promises to surpass all records," Mr.Hawkinson stated. "Radio," he said,"has passed the days of fundamentalexperimentation. In a recent cross-country analysis of predominating buy-ing reasons of a large group of radiopurchasers, it is interesting to notethat 86 per cent. placed tone qualityfirst in importance. Reputation of themanufacturer, ease of tuning, apear-ance and price followed in the ordernamed. The elevation of radio froma novelty to the standard of a realmusical instrument was the Victorcompany's goal from the start. Natur-ally our 30 years' experience in thetalking machine and recorded musicfields placed us in an enviable positionto accomplish this."

A. J. Sisto, sales manager of theRadio Owl Co., of Los Angeles, was aPortland visitor recently.

Harper-Meggee, Inc., one of the larg-est radio firms in the Pacific North-west, has been appointed distributorfor Crosley and Amrad radios and hasopened headquarters at Ninth andEverett streets, Portland, where theconcern will maintain complete servicefor merchandising these two products.Harper-Meggee, Inc., which is a Seattlefirm, having been established 12 yearsago, has absorbed the Barstow-Meggee

Co., which was established at the samePortland location last year to handlethe Kolster-Brandes line. With theacquisition of this State, the Harper-Meggee firm now serves the States ofOregon, Washington, northern Idahoand Montana, and maintains branchesat Spokane, Seattle and Butte. Themanagement of this new branch is incharge of Thomas J. Tobin, who cameto Portland from Spokane, which branchhas been under his management forthe last three years. Mr. Tobin is wellknown in radio trade circles of thenorthwest, having been identified withthe industry for many years. and is con-sidered one of the outstanding mer-chandisers of this class of commodityon the Pacific coast. Mr. Tobin is anex -Portland man, having made his resi-dence here for a number of years andattended school in this state. L. M.Wakefield, well known in radio circlesin the State, has been named salesmanager by the firm and has assumedhis duties. Mr. Wakefield will be re-membered as the manager of Barstow-Meggee. P. W. Blalkowsky, westerndivision representative for the CrosleyRadio Corp., spent a week in Portlandrecently helping the Harper-Meggeecompany establish the new branch.

A spirit of optimism prevails with allmanufacturers of California regardingbusiness conditions in Portland and theentire Pacific northwest, according toSol Jerome Cohn, merchandising mana-ger of the Cohn Bros. stores of thiscity. Cohn Bros. specializes in At-water Kent radios. Mr. Cohn has justreturned from a ten-day buying trip inCalifornia and while there had ampleopportunity to determine the attitude ofthe manufacturers and merchants there.

"We look for a heavy radio buyingseason," said Mr. Cohn. "This seems

to be the same attitude other mer-chants in the northwest have, for acareful study of the economic condi-tions in this part of the country pointstowards ample buying power on thepart of the general public."

The Marshall Wells Co. has addeda new line and is now the distributor inthis territory of the Rola radio, whichis styled the "baby grand of radio,"according to M. A. Dobbin, manager ofthe radio department of the firm. TheRola is manufactured in Oakland, Cal.,where the company has for severalyears manufactured loud speakers. TheRola company, according to Dobbin,has entered the set field in order tomeet a demand for a well built machineof an entirely new class. The initialshipment was disposed of immediatelyupon arrival in Portland.

Among the recent visitors to Port-land were Tom H. Phillips, sales super-visor of F. A. D. Andrea, Inc., manu-facturer of Fada radios, who was ac-companied by H. S. Lyman, Northwestsales manager, who have been makinga tour of the Pacific coast. Mr. Phil-lips stated that he found the Portlandmarket constant, with the hest gradesof radio, in good demand.

Income Exempt front Tarr.

The subject reserved for discussionin this article was that of non-taxableincome. That subject will here be dis-cussed. Let us consider that briefly,so that space can be devoted to ques-tions and answers as well.

Tax Exempt Interest.Undoubtedly the most familiar tax

exempt item is interest on the increas-ingly popular tax exempt bond. Whatbonds are tax exempt? It is generallybelieved that bonds issued by the Uni-ted States Government come in the ex-empt class. That is not strictly so.With the exception of the 1st LibertyBond 31/L a issue, only the interestfrom $5,000 of Liberty Bonds andTreasury Notes are fully exempt. Anyexcess, while exempt from normal tax,is subject to surtax. Federal FarmLoan Bonds, however, have completeexemption. Likewise, the interest onbonds issued by a State or any of itssubdivisions, like a city or county, isexempt from both normal and surtax.

Income Earned Outside ofUnited States.

United States citizens who workabroad enjoy an exemption on theirsalaries, or more exactly, their earnedincome. The exemption applies to onewho for more than six months duringthe year resides abroad and the incomeis earned abroad. Thus, a salesmancovering foreign territory for a great-er part of the year would be exempton his salary and commission appli-cable to the foreign business. (But,subject, of course, to the earned in-come restrictions.)

Building and Loan Dividends.Dividends or interest from building

loan associations up to $300 are ex-empt from tax. It is necessary, how-eevr, that substantially all the businessof the association be confined to mak-ing loans to members.

Insurance Proceeds.The proceeds of life insurance poli-

cies paid by reason of the death of theinsured to his estate or to any bene-ficiary, is exempt from tax. However,where the insured himself collects theproceeds upon the maturity of the poli-cy, taxable income must be reported tothe extent of the difference betweenthe amount collected and the total pre-miums paid during the life of thepolicy.

Amounts received through accidentor health policies, or under workmen'scompensation acts, for personal inju-ries or sickness, need not be included

in income. The amount received bylaw suit or agreement as damages onaccount of injuries or sickness, like-wise does not have to be reported.

Amounts received as compensation,family allotments and allowances forwar risk insurance or as pensions formilitary service are also exempt. Thesoldier's bonus conies in this category.

Gifts and Bequests.Gifts are not taxable either to the

giver or the receiver, irrespective ofthe value of the property at the timeof the gift and its cost to the donor.Neither are legacies and bequests tax-able. Of course, the income from theproperty so received would be subjectto tax in the regular way.

Having discussed in this terse fash-ion what may be excluded from income,we may now proceed to the more im-portant question of what must be in-cluded in income. All income not spe-cifically exempted is taxable. This in-cludes profits on sales, compensationfor personal services, business gains,interest, dividends, etc. In the nextarticle we will analyze the first group,namely, profits on sales. We will theretry to explain exactly how profit is tobe computed for income tax purposes.

QUESTIONS and ANSWERS.Support of Sick Daughter.

Q. My daughter who is twenty-twoyears of age took suddenly ill in Feb-ruary, 1929, and was in the hospitalfor two months and was not able towork during that year. I paid all hos-pital expenses, including nurses' anddoctor bills, and I would be glad toknow if this can be deducted from my1929 income tax. Also, whether I canclaim exemption of $400 on account ofmy supporting her for that year.-S. I. G.

A. While you are not permitted todeduct the hospital bills and other ex-penses of your daughter, you can claimthe $400 credit for dependent, sinceyour daughter was not physically capa-ble of self-support in 1929.

Dividends Paid in Securities.Q. A corporation invested its sur-

plus funds in stocks of other corpora-tions. Finiding no further need forthe surplus, it distributed such stocksas a dividend to its stockholders. Issuch dividend taxable as income at thetime of distribution, or can it be de-ferred until the stock is sold ?-B. F. D.

A. A dividend that is declared instock of another corporation is taxableat the time of distribution based on thevalue of the stock distributed.

Insurance and Taxes.Q. Should a widow list the follow-

ing as income in her tax return? Herhusband died from an accident andshe receives from the Industrial Com-mission about $36.00 every two weeks.She also received insurance of $10,000which she left with the insurance com-pany and they pay her 4 per cent. in-terest twice each year. Are the taxeson the dwelling in which she lives de-ductible from her income?-W. H. C.

A. Industrial insurance pensionawards are not subject to tax. Theinterest received from the insurancecompany is subject to tax. The taxeson the dwelling in which you live area proper deduction in computing netincome.

The radio trade of the East -Bay ter-ritory appears to have lost a little ofits snap and pep of late. This is aterritory in which a large percentageof its building for a number of yearshas been in individual homes. It isasy to see why it is good retail radio

territory. In fact, it is pretty goodterritory for anything in the musicline, and right now there is a fairturn of piano selling, for a good pianois still a magnificent ornament to thehome, as well as desirable for the per-son who loves to learn music as wellas to enjoy the performance of others.

D. W. Ramsell, who for a number ofyears has been manager of the pianodepartment of the Jackson FurnitureCo., reports that they are having arather encouraging turn, some salesand very encouraging prospects. Theschools are giving more attention topiano music, and there seems to besomething of a revival of interest onthe part of those who are learners. Hehas taken on the care of the radio de-partment also. W. W. Cross, who forso long has made an enviable record inthis department, found his attack was

- more -serious than supposed. While re-ports of his condition have some en-couragement, it does not appear thathe will be able to take charge soon.So. Mr. Ramsell is giving the depart -

went his services, hut hoping and wish-ing for the return of Mr. Cross, assomething always moves when Mr.Cross gets into action. Sales have beenrunning a little light in the radio de-partment but more sales are beginningto appear and more prospects are onthe string. Fortunately, says Mr. Ram -sell, he finds the stock a clean one ofactual sellers, invoice close, and notrade-ins to speak of on the floor. Infact, he believes in placing very_ lowvaluation on trade-ins if they are ac-cepted at all for the reason that eventhough sold again at fair advantage,there is always the prospect of morethan a profitable amount of servicingahead.

George Calvin, manager of the Hau-schildt Music Co., reports that they arehaving no quiet time around theirplace. In fact, the .sales boys havebeen making so much fuss about it thatthey have been obliged to yield andgive them another floor for radio dis-play and demonstration. As they havefive stories and a basement all theirown, they can manage this. Mr. Calvinstates that all their lines of radio(about seven) are selling more or less.Sometimes one line runs ahead, some-times another. Just now they are bet-ting heavy on the Philco, because ofthe wonderful tie-up they have madeand its unparallelled advertising ad-vantage. A banner on the front of theawning tells of a Philco concert at theT. & D. and offers an autographedphoto of Maurice Chevalier to eachlady attending the matinee. The greatbug -a -boo of the trade in Oakland atthe present moment is the dumping ofdistress merchandise. Of this they havehad more than their share, principally

The Hau-schildt establishment is so situated a-to catch many prospective customer-for distress merchandise, and theirsales force have learned to accentuatethe fact that such merchandise mustbe in distress either because it has nothad satisfactory selling qualities or be-cause its makers are ready with somenewer patterns to merchandise. Theargument wins, so they are very busy,and not worried by the dumping.

The Music Shoppe, operated by J. M.O'Neill and M. V. Moore at the cornerof Durant and Shattuck avenues, looksup swell in its new home. Great win-dows give a cheerful appearance. Onesteps inside on soft high - pile rugs.Divans, sofas, and double - upholsteredchairs invite the visitor to be at homeand comfortable. Tasteful setting, flow-ers and growing plants all help to getaway from business formality. "Thebest January we have ever had," is thereport they render. The general run oftrade are looking for moderate -pricedinstruments, yet some of the betterones sell. Among others they sold clue-ing January five Grebe instruments at$310, and eight at $250. While theGrebe is something of a favorite withthem in that they believe in its qual-ity and also in its high-grade prices,yet other numbers are not at all outof the selling. Take the Brunswick.It has many admirers, and is good foran all -year-round trade. In fact, theybelieve in considerable variety, enoughto met any reasonable taste of the cus-tomer. Collections in Berkeley theyreport excellent. A run over their longlist of outstanding accounts recentlyshowed but one to place on a doubtfullist, and that not hopeless. They pro-nounce Berkeley still a fine radio city.

The Henderson Radio Shop at thecorner of Bancroft & Shattuck is nowputting up a great display of Radiolasand Radiotron tubes, and their shopis a great display in itself.

The University Radio Laboratoriesat 2440 Bancroft are now putting upa great exclusive Majestic display.With the various models distributedabout an elegant large display andsales room; immediately in front of thegreat plate glass window is a curtainof dark plush. On its lower edge standsone of the new models while swingingabove a great eagle, with the inscrip-tion above "Majestic."

Lee S. Roberts, the San Franciscomusic dealer, has moved to the secondfloor on the corner of Post and Stock-ton. This second floor has display win-dows like the first floor, though not sohigh.

The Fox Piano Co., in Oakland,caught red-handed unloading a truck-load of Victor radio-said they weregoing to sell them. They report thatthey have been having excellent suc-cess with the Victor, and the nice partof it is that customers are so well sat-isfied. They feel that they have gottheir money's worth. -ALLEN.

Philco dealers throughout the coun-try are tieing up with the Paramountpicture "Street of Chance," with Wil-liam Powell. The Philadelphia StorageBattery Co., this city, maker of Philcoradio, is using billboard posters andmagazine advertisements showing Wil-liam Powell in the blur and in the clearand featuring the tie-up between thepicture and Philco.

C. L. McWhorter, the Pacific coastbranch manager of Philadelphia Stor-age Battery Co., manufacturers of thePhilco radio, and Harry Boyd Brown,retail sales promotion manager of theorganization, will preside at a Philcodealers' meeting at the Hotel Utah ofthis city this week, it is announced byHarry M. Frank, vice - president ofLouis A. Bailey, Inc., local Philco dis-tributor.

A general policy and sales plan willbe outlined to seventy-five dealers inintermountain territory, it is stated.

While the radio trade has been stim-ulated to a livelier public participationin the newer sets as they are intro-duced the main interest insofar as pres-ent clay sales are concerned is in thereductions that have been made in afew of the nationally prominent makes.There has been a fairly good demandfor records since the month began andthis has continued until the presentwhen a peak for the year has beenreached. Brighter outdoor life hasalso been helpful, the milder tempera-ture bringing out the traffic that leadsto the dealers' stores.

Philco radios are forging to thefront these days as the Motor PartsCo., and the Philco manufacturers, thePhiladelphia Storage Battery Co., co-operate with the trade through theParamount Pictures in a comprehen-sive program of exploitation. Lewis Radio Distributors, 45 NorthSeventh street, now are offering the 25per cent. trade-in allowance which theColonial Radio Corp., recently mergedwith the Symington Co., of Rochester,N. Y., are submitting to the dealers on"trade-ins" for the Model 32, duringthe month. Sales have been stimu-lated by the offer.

The Lewis Radio Distributors alsofeature Bosch radio. No new modelsare looked for in this line until afterthe June convention of the R. M. A.The firm reports that Bosch radio salesare steady as a result of the policy tohold to a stabilized price list, and salesto date this year show the confidenceof the dealers in the line.

Record sales of the recent issue ofthe Columbia Phonograph Co., with alocal branch at 40 N. Sixth street, intwo recordings of the "St. James In-firmary" and "The Man from theSouth," both on a single record byRube Bloom and His Bayou Boys, havebeen booming here in recent days.

Ted Lewis' records in the Columbialist will be the high light of the weekcommencing February 22, when thelocal branch will tie-in with the deal-ers in the special window displays andexploitation programs to mark TedLewis' appearance at the MastbaumTheatre during that week.

The Wanamaker radio and talkingmachine departments have been assem-bled on the seventh floor temporarilypending the completion of the newlydecorated and elaborate quarters on thesame floor, which will be the perman-ent section for these trade wares. Theradio and talking machine departmentwill be removed by March 1 to the newlocation in the central section of thefloor near the Juniper street side.There will be attractive furnishings, alarger number of booths and demon-stration rooms for radios. The officesof the buyer for the departments, Rob-ert Allen, will remain on the balconybeneath the main floor, while the officesof the assistant buyer, George B.Young, are removed to the Seventhfloor in the new quarters. All the wellknown and nationally known makesare to be carried.

The Stromberg-Carlson radios havebeen added to the lines carried by Wal-ter Linton, for sixteen years in thetalking machine and radio business inthis city, and at one time president ofthe Philadelphia Victor Dealers' Asso-ciation, with two stores at 224 S. Tests of Its RadiosSouth Bend, Ind., Saturday.

A series of tests to prove that Ken-nedy screen grid radio sets faithfullyreproduce what the broadcasting sta-tion puts on the air, were made recent-ly by the Colin B. Kennedy Corp., thiscity, under the direction of ProfessorCharles A. Nash, of the Armour In-stitute of Technology.

Using a recording oscillograph, saidto be the most sensitive instrumentavailable for such tests, Professor Nashmade photographic records of modu-lated currents direct from the broad-casting station's amplifier, and compar-eded them with records made directlyfrom a stock Kennedy sets, tuned inon the same program.

"The oscillograph records indicatethat a Kennedy sets, barring static andpossible outside interference whichaffects all radio, gives its owners justwhat the station broadcasts," Profes-sor Nash declared.

"The oscillograph test is unusuallyinteresting and valuable," said R. H.Caldwell, chief engineer for Kennedy,"for it represents the first attempt ofa radio manufacturer to prove to theradio public, in a scientific manner theclaims of faithful reproduction madein advertising and selling."

CLEVELAND, 0., Friday.

Radio received a great deal of favor-able publicity this wek due to the OhioRadio Trades Association being officialhost to the fourth ánnual convention ofthe National Federation of Radio Asso-ciations and the second annual conven-tion of Radio Wholesalers, at the HotelStatler. The convention was well at-tended by Cleveland and northern Ohiodealers and every distributor in thisvicinity was also present. The talksinspired new confidence in the tradeand the conclave proved conclusively tothe general public that the bottom hasnot fallen out of the industry as someseemed inclined to think. The threelocal newspapers gave liberal editorialspace to the affair and both radio sta-tions broadcast part of the proceedings.

The visiting dealers from nearbytowns gave their respective wholesalersorders for sets, in many instances, andthe general opinion heard during theconvention was that business was be-ginning to pick up and that the out-look for the future is bright.

B. W. Smith, Inc., Edison distribu-tor, has taken a two-year lease withoption for one additional year on ap-proximately 6,000 square feet of spacein the Forster building, 6545 Carnegieavenue. It will be used for a servicedepartment and other purposes. Thecompany's offices and salesrooms willhe maintained at Euclid avenue, nearEast Nineteenth street.

A campaign is being run in Cleve-land newspapers for the benefit of Vic-tor dealers in which free demonstra-tions without obligation in the homeare featured. This advertising is pull-ing good results, the Cleveland TalkingMachine Co., distributor, reports. Deal-ers are tying up with the drive andthere are many attractive window dis-plays throughout the city. The Lyon& Healy Co. had a double window dis-play of Victor this week. The Wurlit-zer store on Euclid avenue also had avery attractive display of Victor ma-chines and records.

The Starr Piano Co. was the onlymusic house in the city to have a boothat the Cleveland Food Show at thePublic Auditorium. It was in chargeof Hr. Nussley, sales manager, and inaddition to pianos the Starr radio wasfeatured.

The Grossman Bros. Music Co. hasbeen appointed distributor for the Tri-olian and Silver lines of fretted instru-ments, comprised of various types ofguitars, ukuleles and mandolins. Thecompany has added two new salesmento its force, V. Sanborn Clayton and L.Bloomberg. They are selling both sup-plies and instruments. Business, espe-cially from out-of-town points, is stead-ily increasing, officials of the companyreport and they are looking forwardto a good volume this Spring.

The Haas Electric Co., distributorfor Colonial sets in Cleveland andnorthern Ohio, has extended the leaseon its present quarters on Huron roadfur a period of years. This location

Joseph Geri, salesmanager of Colonial, and Fred Carson,general manager, were both in Cleve-land for the convention and paid a visitto the Haas Electric offices.

The Cleveland Products Co., on EastNinth street, has again begun sellingparts for radio. Prior to its becomingdistributor for the Temple line it hadbuilt up a large business in parts, butgave it up to devote its full efforts tothe selling of sets.

The radio store that is to be openedby Herman Lesser on Prospect avenuewill be operated as "Herman's." It isa large double store and runs throughfrom Prospect avenue into Huron roadand is but a couple of doors from theinterurban station. Nationally -knownlines of radio and accessories will becarried. The opening will take placewithin a week.

The M. and M. Co., radio whole-salers, have a special display of thenew Hammond electrical clocks in theirwindow this week that is attractingmuch attention. The various models ofthe line are shown and they give thetime at various American cities andothers in Europe. The M. & M. com-pany distributes Sparton sets, and re-ports a steadily increasing demand forthem.

The Goodman Music Co., 10526 St.Clair avenue, has been conducting asales drive on the Bosch sets, with verygood results. This company and otherradio merchants in the Glenville dis-trict are taking part in the merchan-dise exposition at the Uptown Thea-tre this week, which is proving goodpublicity as the affair is being attend-ed by large crowds.

Walter fierce, of Pierce Radio Shop,Evanston, Ill., was unanimously electedpresident of the Midwest Radio TradesAssociation at a meeting of the boardof directors, held recently.

Harry Alter, of the Harry Alter CO.,has been president of the associationsince last June, but has resigned andMr. Pierce was elected to succeed him.

Mr. Pierce began his official dutiesimmediately and has issued a call fora general meeting of the radio dealersin Chicago to be held Friday, February21.

Harry Simmons was elected secre-tary to take the place vacated by JohnM. Redell, Jr., recently deceased.

The Midwest Radio Trades Associa-tion is starting on an active campaignfor the betterment of the radio indus-try in Chicago and metropolitan area.One of the most outstanding activitiesof the association is that of examiningand registering service men.

Milwaukee, Wis., Friday.Radio sales continue at a low ebb

in this territory and indications arethat conditions will not change mater-ially until after March 1. The amountof distress merchandise on the marketat the present time is rapidly decreas-ing, much to the satisfaction of localretailers.

The Badger Radio Corp., Majesticdistributors, reports that January salesexceed those of the correspondingmonth a year ago by more than 22 percent. E. Durr, general sales manager,announces the appointment of NewtonD. Weinberg to succeed D. C. Grosh-ong recently resigned. as representa-tive of the firm in the southwesternpart of the State. An ever-increasingnumber of stores are handling Majesticsets exclusively. It is estimated thatapproximately 70 per cent. of the deal-ers out in the State followed this policyduring the past year and found it prof-itable.

Mr. Skeels, sales promotion mana-ger of the Badger Radio Corp., is nowthe proud father of a baby girl, thestork having visited his domicile, re-cently. Both mother and child are do-ing nicely.

The Speak -O -Phone Corp. plans toopen its studio at 191 Fourth streetwithin the next two weeks.

Mr. Purdy, of the George C. Beck-with Co., Crosley distributors, is at-tending a jobbers' convention at thefactory in Cincinnati.

Recordings from the Paramountmovie, "The Love Parade" featuringMaurice Chevalier, are moving rapidly,according to the North Central Distri-butors, Victor representatives in thisterritory. All of those who attendedthe Tuesday meeting of the Victor Rec-ord Girls' Club were presented with aValentine containing a picture of Mau-rice Chevalier.

Mr. Blumenthal, of the foreign recorddepartment of the Victor company, call-ed during the past week. He reportsthat a large number of foreign recordsare sold in Milwaukee each year, andthat sales are increasing.

The Orth Music Co., on Wisconsin,near Fifth, reports that January salesare approximately the same as thoseof the corresponding month a yearago. Atwater Kent, Victor and Spartonsets are enjoying a good demand. Espe-cially is this true of the new Sparton,which is steadily growing in publicfavor. Columbia records are said tobe selling rapidly.

The Interstate Sales Co. has takenon the distribution in this territory ofan automatic phonograph manufacturedby the Plymouth Radio & PhonographCo., of Plymouth, Wis.

.January sales are approximately thesame as those of the correspondingmonth a year ago, according to theGreat Lakes Radio Corp., which oper-ates several stores in Milwaukee. At-water Kent and Majestic sets are en-joying a fairly brisk demand. The newHoward radio is expected to sell rapidlythis spring.

The radio department of the BostonStore reports that business has shownconsiderable improvement during thelast three weeks. Indications are thatsales will increase in spring.

As the year grows older local radiomanufacturers are beginning to decideupon their policies for the year, whichare to the effect that production willhe held down for a month or so to meetthe anticipated demand. At the sametime wholesale distributors are layingplans for enlarged sales and new terri-tories to work in, with preliminarywork so far indicating that a favor-able reaction is in the offing. The situ-ation in general looks healthy and thetrade is consequently more optimistic.

Hudson -Ross, Inc., Crosley and Am-rad distributors here, are planning tomove before April 30 to either a westside or south side location where park-ing space will be permitted dealerswho wish to visit their offices. BobHimmel, president, with his brotherCharles, returned Wednesday of thisweek from Cleveland where they hadbeen attending the National Federatedand Wholesalers' convention. He saidthat business is better here than hehad anticipated; that the reaction fromhis dealers is very favorable. BothBob and Charles will leave ChicagoSunday night for Cincinnati where athree-day Crosley convention will beheld. Future radio distribution planswill be talked over as will those forthe new electric refrigerator that theCrosley organization is soon to bringout.

L. R. O'Brien, district sales repre-sentative of the Ken-Rad Corp., is ona trip through his territory which in-cludes part of Iowa, Wisconsin andIllinois in the interest of his company'stubes.

After more than a month spent inthe South Seas on a cruise in his yacht"Mizpah," Commander Eugene F. Mc-Donald, Jr., president of the ZenithRadio Corp., returned home with hisparty this week. The party broughtwith them a penguin and a lizard whilesea lions and four giant tortoises areawaiting shipment from Miami, Fla.,where the party disembarked.

E. R. Peel, formerly representingthe H. II. Eby Mfg. Co., who main-tained offices at 205 W. Wacker drivehas recently closed these offices and isnow located with the Utah Radio Prod-ucts Co., with which the Eby concernrecently consolidated.

The assets of the Ampli-Sound Sys-tems, Inc., 224 N. Desplaning street,bankrupt, were sold at auction Febru-ary 13. On February 11 the assets ofthe Division street Music Shop, 2100-02W. Division street, were also sold atauction for the benefit of creditors.

Triad Plans Extensive

The Triad Manufacturing Co., Inc.,this city, has announced its advertis-ing plans for 1930, and in actual fig-ures, the money to be spent by theTriad company amounts to double thatspent last year. Trade journals, news-papers and other media will be usedin an even more extensive scale in car-rying the Triad tube message to thecountry at large. The 1929 business far exceeded themost optimistic hopes of Triad officials.Added to that, the company reports alarge increase in sales since the newshas been made public that Triad tubesare now licensed under all RCA, Gen-eral Electric and Westinghouse Elec-tric patents. This fact, coupled withthe recent improvements in Triad T-24and T-27 tubes, which are said to beprotected against burn -outs and render-ed completely non-microphonic, has re-sulted in an even greater increase inthe sales, an increase that bids fair toestablish an extremely gratifying salesvolume for Triad during 1930.

The keynote of Tuesday morning'ssession was receipt of a report on thetube situation, by J. Newcomb Black-man, of New York, as chairman of aspecial committee in charge. Mr. Black-man also read a report by Louis Buehnfor the Trade Relations section of thegeneral committee, Mr. Buehn beingabsent. Mr. Blackman reported for theTube Committee that standardizationof practices, similar to that which timehas brought about in older industries,is essential for the radio tube indus-try. The bicycle and the automobilewere two commodities which he com-pared with the radio set, in tracingthe stages during which they weremerchandised at first with a conglo-meration of accessories and later withuniform and identified parts and sup-plies. Mr. Blackman deplored the un-stable conditions characteristic of theset and tube business at retail todayand vigorously recommended remedialaction by the trade in adopting higherstandards of sale, both in originalequipment and in the development ofreplacement business.

Robert J. Mailhouse, of New Haven,reported for the Market Study sec-tion; Hollis Baughn, of Boston, for theBetter Selling Committee; Francis E.Stern, of New Haven, for the TrafficCommittee and H. C. Bonfig, of KansasCity, for the Membership Committee.The findings of all these officials werereceived with interest by the meetingand it was agreed among those pres-ent that each report reflected carefuland intelligent work in its preparation.

and Westinghouse plants for use inradio production in the RCA -Victorplant. Combined with the appropria-tion of $3,820,000, which was author-ized last year and which is still beingexpended, the RCA -Victor Co. by theend of 1930 will have made an outlayof $11,420,000 for plant expansion anddevelopment.

Preparations for the construction ofthe new building are already underway. The structure will occupy theentire square bounded by Delawareavenue, Cooper, Front and Pennstreets, with the exception of the plotnow covered by the RCA -Victor execu-tive offices. Several rows of houses,two parking places, the Victor indi-vidual garages, the present factoryemployment office, an old factory build-ing and the engine house of the Victorprivate fire department will have to beremoved to make room for the new fac-tory building.

Mr. Shumaker pointed out that sincethe unification of Victor with RCA andwith the radio manufacturing organi-zations of General Electric and West-inghouse, the need for expansion of theRCA -Victor plant has been acute. Ithas been decided that not only Victorradio, Electrolas and records, but alsoRCA Radiolas, which formerly weremanufactured in Westinghouse andGeneral Electric plants, will now beproduced in the Camden plant of theRCA -Victor Co. This plan demandsimmediate addition of space and equip-ment and will make Camden the radiomanufacturing center of the UnitedStates.

"The great expenditures authorizedby the RCA -Victor Co.," said Mr. Shu-maker, "are significant of the confi-dence in radio's future entertained bythe financial and industrial leaders whoare directing the destinies of RCA -Victor. They are a part of the pur-pose of the company to bring to theAmerican public the finest and mostadvanced radio and phonograph prod-ucts at prices made possible by enor-mous demand and production. Theseexpenditures also reflect our belief inthe fundamental soundness and pros-prity of the country upon which ourindustry, like all others, depends. Weface the immediate as well as the dis-tant future with absolute confidence."

Six colored men are under arrest inconnection with the operation of a northside ring responsible for the theft ofmore than $3,000 worth of sets. A little better trade atmosphere hasbeen evidenced in New England duringthe past week or ten days, Francis E.Stern, of Stern & Co., Silver radio dis-tributing organization, declared today."Nevertheless, we haven't started toget the business in the amount wethink we .should be entitled to rightnow," Mr. Stern stated. "We are atleast getting dealer interest and prom-ises, whereas up to the last couple ofweeks, the average dealer looked likethe chief mourner at a funeral."

Mr. Stern reported that Stern & Co.,Inc., of Maine, is now doing businessat its new quarters, in the Hines build-ing, 335 Forrest avenue, Portland.Owen Webb, known to the radio tradethroughout Maine, is an officer of thecompany and is directly in charge of itsactivities. He has with him in his salesforce Ralph F. Small and P. Y. Illsley,both known to Maine dealers. The re-ception of the Silver line in the handsof Stern & Co., Inc., of Maine, has beenexceptionally satisfactory, it is re-ported.

While some distributors and retailersreport a slow January and February,the turnover of a number of sets inthis territory has been quite satisfac-tory.

In the record business it would seemthat the talking pictures have provena fine stimulus. Theme songs are ingood demand.

O. D. Standke, owner of the StandkeMusic Store, has been experiencing avery nice business both in records,portables and radios. All three branchesof his business are doing very well.Theatre hits seem to be bolstering upthe record business considerably butthis store has a steady and good de-mand for discs at all times outsidethose numbers.

"We maintain the same selling spiritas we did years ago," Mr. Standkesaid. "Saturday still is our big (layin the week, and our business gener-ally is equal to what it used to be. Weuse our windows and counters forstimulating sales, and old reliablemethods still bring us the business."

Cecil C. Jones, manager of the radiodepartment of Mace-Ryers, is very wellsatisfied with the way radio salesopened up in February. While Janu-ary was a bit dull, the present monthhas introduced spring buying. Majes-ties are leading because they are beingpushed by this firm, but other machinesare going nicely, too.

This firm finds that the tight overKWKH has stimulated the radio busi-ness. Mr. Jones reports that the cam-paign of "Hello World" has caused a25 per cent. increase in his radio turn-over.

The Mace-Ryer Co. has discontin-ued its record department. The com-pany, however, still is selling portablesand is doing a nice business in thisline. Tube replacement business is tobe pushed during the present year, ac-cording to Mr. Jones, who says that hefeels it will amount to about a thirdof the volume of the radio department.According to L. M. Kelly, district man-ager here for the Philco, business inthe Middle West for this line has beenvery satisfactory and the outlook pointsto still better conditions. January,surprisingly held up very well, andFebruary is still better. A number ofnew salesmen have been added to thePhilco sales force. These are W. S.Faulk, J. C. Calloway, C. E. Esterlyand Charley Gaffney. With the additionof these during the past two weeks,the total number of salesmen the Philcodivision here now has on the road isincreased to 16.

"We are very optimistic about ourpresent and future prospects," Mr.Kelly said. "On some of the new modelswe have run out of stock several timesduring the last three or four weeks.We are getting some good new dealersall the time. Six dealers from smalltowns in Missouri and Kansas came inone day this week and wanted to rep-resent the line"-which is indicative ofhow well the Philco is being received.

Silliman, eastern salesmanager of Thomas A. Edison, Inc.,has appointed the Tampa Radio Corp.,Tampa, as distributors for the Stateof Florida. This is the second South-ern distributor appointed for Edisonsince the beinnning of the year, Mr.Silliman having announced recentlythe appointment of the Russell -HeckleCo., in Memphis, Tenn. There are nowsix Edison distributors operating inthe Southern states, located at Dallas,New Orleans, Memphis, Tampa, Atlan-ta and Richmond.

The Tampa Radio Corp. is a subsidi-ary of the Tampa Drug Co., one ofFlorida's leading specialty jobbinghouses. W. G. Allen, chairman of theboard, established the business in 1906,developing the concern from the pro-verbial shoestring to its present posi-tion of prominence. Mr. Allen is alsointerested and active in various otherbusiness and civic enterprises.
