You should be able to use this evaluation booklet to help chart your progress in the “big ideas” in Mathematics from S1 to S2. There is a breakdown of each “big idea” detailed below. At various points throughout the Year, your teacher will ask you to think about how you are doing. This will allow you to highlight areas of strengths or areas that require further work. You can then easily identify next steps to help you be well prepared for any future activities, assessed tasks and written assessments.

My goals
You have been working on lots of different maths skills. Think about the skills you want to
practise more so you can get better at them. You are going to write them below and use these as
your goals to work towards.
The targets are what we are suggesting you need to be comfortable with in order to proceed
with teaching of National 5 skills. Remember, everybody needs to practise their maths skills.
Keep up the good work and it will pay off!

My Targets In numeracy and mathematics there is a myth that there is always a right answer and a right method for every
problem. In real life, there is usually no such thing. What TV should I buy? Which bank account should I open?
Where should we go on holiday? Reasoning in numeracy and mathematics is essential to helping us make informed
choices, and to be able to explain to others how they came about.
As well as requiring good mental agility you need to be able to think about the concepts and go beyond recall of
knowledge in the following ways:
interpret questions
select and communicate processes and solutions justify choice of strategy used
link mathematical concepts use mathematical vocabulary and notation
algebraic reasoning
