Engineering Postgraduate Welcome

Welcome Reception for

New Postgraduate Students

Tuesday, 25th February 2014

4.30pm-5.30pm (registration at 4pm)

Location:

Matthew Pavilion

(Map ref E24)

During O-Week we will be hosting an informal gathering to welcome new Postgraduate Coursework students to the Engineering Faculty at UNSW only. Both administrative and academic staff will be invited too, so it will be a great opportunity to meet new people from your area of expertise, as well as from across the faculty. There will be a brief address to welcome you to the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW, as well as a few pointers from the Associate Dean (Academic). You will then be free to mingle and network with colleagues from your area of study and from across the Faculty. Complimentary refreshments, hot drinks and drinks from the bar will be served. No RSVP is necessary as attendance is not compulsory, but it is a good opportunity for you to meet some new students just like yourself. This event is catered strictly for our new Postgraduate Engineering students ONLY, please do not bring any guests.

Enrolment Advice

UNSW Online Handbook: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au

Where to get advice Most of the information you need can be found using the Handbook and School Website links referred to below. However, if you would like personal advice about selecting courses, credit exemptions or advanced standing, you should contact your School Office directly. Contact details for all School Offices can be found in the back of this brochure.

The Online Handbook is a useful resource containing detailed

information about all programs and courses offered at UNSW, including links to Class Timetables. You will refer to the Handbook throughout your time at UNSW so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with it

now.

Engineering Welcome booklet Postgraduate S1 2014 6

School Websites School websites will provide a range of different information about your School and may provide some information regarding your enrolment, or at least provide details of who to contact for assistance. See page 11 for the full list of School websites.

A few hints:

Enrolment is usually completed through the myUNSW website. You are expected to manage your own timetable and enrolment throughout your studies.

If you get stuck when using myUNSW Online Enrolment, you will find a “HELP” link displayed in the top right hand corner on every screen. Just click on the link to obtain assistance and further information about the screen you are on.

Students have until the end of Week 1 to add semester-length courses to their enrolment via myUNSW.

Please ensure you check with your School Office for any compulsory courses you may need to attend. These should be scheduled into your timetable before adding other courses.

You will need to spend some time considering which class times fit best with other classes and with your work/life commitments.

Please be aware that not all postgraduate classes are held during business hours and may not run within normal semester dates. Some courses are offered in distance mode, as evening classes, in block format (over 5 days) or for a 6 week duration. Please make sure you are aware of the running times, dates and locations of your classes. If you are unsure contact your School Office or the Postgraduate Coordinator of your program.

Labs and tutorials normally don’t commence until Week 2, check with your School if you are not sure.

Additional important information

Withdrawing from Courses If you find that your workload is too tough or that you have selected the wrong level of courses, you have until the 31st of March to drop those courses without failure and without financial penalty (This is known as the Semester 1 “Census Date”). If it is after the 31st of March, you may still be able to drop the course without failure, but only to the end of Week 5. However the course fees will not be refundable. We recommend contacting your School Office for advice before going ahead. Check the “Key Dates” in myUNSW for enrolment deadlines for courses that do not run in the standard 13-week semester.

Full-time/Part-time study (International Students Take Special Note!!) UNSW defines normal full-time enrolment as 18-24 units of credit (UOC) per semester. Students are encouraged to enrol in 24 UOC per semester to ensure standard progression and completion within the duration of your program. For International Students this is particularly important in order to comply with your Student Visa requirements. Please refer to this link for more information: https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/resources/ESOSstudent.html
