Founded in 1967, the Western Piedmont Foundation was one of the first, private

fundraising organizations among members of the North Carolina Community

College System. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization and was created to

develop public and private support that will supplement beyond the county, state

and federal funds needed to sustain Western Piedmont Community College.

Since its inception, donations to the Foundation have provided students with the

scholarships they need to attend and maintain enrollment in college. Donations

have also funded professional and community development activities that enhance

the service Western Piedmont Community College provides to students and Burke

County residents.

In addition to the hundreds of donors that support the Foundation, the Western

Piedmont Foundation’s Board of Directors volunteer their time and energy to further

the mission of the Foundation, the College and the Burke County community.

PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

Dear Friends,

It’s my honor to serve as the President of the Western

Piedmont Foundation for the 2015-2016 academic year.

As an alumnus of Western Piedmont Community College,

I know first-hand the value that Western Piedmont

Community College brings to our community and the

impact the Foundation has on the lives of our students.

Last year, the Foundation provided more than $110,000 in student scholarships

and assistance to our students needing financial help for college. Additionally, the

Foundation provided more than $35,000 to support programs designed to bring

educational opportunities for our employees and more than 2,500 citizens in the

community. This was made possible by donors like you (see pgs 14 – 19) as well

100% of our full-time employees, 100% of our College’s Board of Trustees and

100% of our Foundation’s Board of Directors who gave to the Foundation. These

are remarkable results! Thank you!

This year, the Foundation will maintain focus on raising funds to support student

scholarships in addition to professional and community development (pgs 4 – 6).

There are several convenient ways to give (pgs 8 – 9) and we hope you will consider

a making a gift because your support does so much to make an impact on Western

Piedmont students, employees and our shared community.

Thank you for your consideration and thank you for your commitment, dedication

and belief in the critical work of the Foundation. We deeply appreciate your support.

Very Truly,

Joel Z. Wakefield

The Western Piedmont compass symbolizes the

College as a wayfinding tool to help our students,

employees and community find their way to

accessible, high quality education that improves

lives and promotes growth in our community.

STUDENTSCHOLARSHIPS

Each year, the Foundation provides student scholarships and assistance through

endowed and annual funds. Awards are based on need and merit and make it

possible for hundreds of students to maintain pursuit of their education and

career goals.

However, with the rising cost of tuition, textbooks and general living expenses,

additional funding is needed to provide unrestricted support for our students.

More than 80% of Western Piedmont students receive aid through federal grant

programs and scholarships. But there are students who are often forced to choose

lower paying jobs over the pursuit of a degree.

Donations to the General Scholarship Fund are needed to increase the number

of unrestricted scholarships and assistance funds available to students who share

the financial challenge of staying enrolled and focused on their educational and

career dreams.

Scholarship recipients gather at the annual scholarship reception to show their appreciation and gratitude for the donors that fund their education.

SCHOLARSHIPS DEVELOPMENTPROFESSIONALA core value at Western Piedmont Community College is the professional

development of our employees. We believe providing training and educational

opportunities to our faculty and staff is an important way to ensure quality programs

and services are provided to the community.

Development opportunities are provided through the Foundation’s Faculty/Staff

Mini-Grant program, three endowed teaching chairs, and annual awards for the

Excellence in Teaching and Outstanding Staff Member. Other opportunities are

provided through the Jim W. Burnett Professional Development Fund, which was

established by former president, Dr. Jim Burnett who recognized a need to establish

a permanent fund to help meet the growing need for faculty and staff training.

Donations to support professional development are needed to sustain and

expand the number of professional development opportunities made available to

College employees.

Communication instructor Deb Rose was awarded a Foundation grant to be trained on oral history projects, which she will use to work with students on a service learning project.

Health Sciences Dean Ann Marie McNeely received a Foundation grant to attend a conference to learn new strategies to enhance the College’s developmental courses.

Rusty Harrison and Christine Sprinkle are recipients of the Foundation’s annual Excellence in Teaching (Harrison) and Outstanding Staff Member (Sprinkle) awards.

COMMUNITYDEVELOPMENT

The Foundation assists the College in fulfilling its mission to promote growth in the

community by providing funding for numerous education-based events for local

citizens. Programs are held throughout the year and are designed to explore and

celebrate cultural diversity, global events and social topics.

Each year the Foundation sponsors the Fall Speakers Forum & Ervin Constitutional

Issues Program, multiple concerts by the Western Piedmont Symphony resident

quartet and Advanced Manufacturing Day. These events are free, open to the public,

and offer the local community access to unique learning opportunities. Additionally,

the Foundation supports the Exploring Joara Archeological Field School at the Berry

dig site in Burke County. This site enables many citizens to interact with an important

piece of history

Donations to support community development are needed to increase and

continue providing education-based programs for the community.

6

The Foundation provides the community with four concerts a year from the Western Piedmont Symphony’s resident quartet. The Kontras Quartet visited campus from 2012 – 2015.

WPCC students, employees and community members participate in the archeological field school each summer at the Berry Dig Site, a location receiving global attention for its recent discoveries.

DEVELOPMENTWestern Piedmont Foundation has hosted the Annual Golf Classic since 1984 and

Caterpillar in Morganton has served as the lead sponsor since 1998. The tournament

is held at Mimosa Hills Country Club and attracts golfers and sponsors committed to

supporting the mission of the Western Piedmont Foundation and Western Piedmont

Community College.

A record number of golfers attended the event on May 4, 2015 with 30 teams

competing for team awards and hole prizes. Proceeds from the event go to

support cultural arts programs offered on campus for the community, employee

performance awards and a Mini-Grant program that encourages the pursuit

of innovative teaching strategies, active learning projects and professional

development.

Support of the Annual Golf Classic by golfers, food and hole sponsors is needed

to support recognition of employee performance.

ESTABLISH A SCHOLARSHIP

There are two types of scholarships: Endowed and Annual. Both types of

scholarships are established and administered using a fund authority based on the

Donor’s wishes and guidelines established by the Foundation.

A named endowed scholarship requires a minimum principal gift of $10,000, which

is permanently restricted for investment. Income on the principal provides annual

scholarship awards and is determined by the Foundation’s annual endowment

spending allotment.

A named endowment may be established with an initial gift of any amount, and the

Foundation expects that the minimum principal required will be reached within three

years. If the principal is not reached after three years, the fund balance will shift to

the General Scholarship Fund.

Scholarship awards begin after the fully endowed fund earns interest income for one

year. Designated gifts to the endowed scholarship fund may be made at any time.

A Donor may establish a named annual scholarship at any time with a minimum gift

amount of $1,000. The Donor, or Donors, contribute the funds necessary to award

the scholarship each year and the fund must maintain a balance equal to the annual

scholarship award amount and the initial minimum gift amount ($1,000.00 + annual

award = minimum balance).

In the event that the donor is unable to provide the annual scholarship or when funds

are not sufficient to cover the scholarship award amount, the balance of the fund will

be transferred to the Foundation’s General Scholarship fund.

SUPPORT THE ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN

The Foundation conducts an Annual Giving Campaign every year during the fall

semester. Donors may make unrestricted gifts to the Western Piedmont Foundation

during this time, or at any point in the year. Gifts to the Annual Giving Fund may be

unrestricted or can be designated to an existing scholarship. A complete listing of

Western Piedmont Foundation’s scholarships, loan program, endowed teaching

chairs and enhancement funds are listed on page 10-12.

8

WAYS TO GIVE

Page 9: €™s wishes and guidelines established by the Foundation. A named endowed scholarship requires a minimum principal ... Carlton E. Caruso, Sr. Endowed Scholarship

Regardless of the type of gift a donor chooses to pursue, all gifts will support

the mission of the Western Piedmont Foundation and are tax deductible. Several

convenient methods of giving are available.

Dr. Cheryl Oxford and Louise White, the Foundation Legacy Society includes donors

who make planned gifts to the Foundation as bequests, income generating assets,

charitable remainder trusts, life insurance and retirement plan assets.

Planned giving tactics offer donor benefits including increasing or securing retirement

income, reduced and eliminated income taxes, reduced estate taxes and ensuring
