The Clip ‘n Climb ArenaThere are some areas at Clip ‘n Climb that some children will find over stimulating. There are bright flashing lights and loud music is played during the climbing sessions. Clip ‘n Climb Berwick are aware that this can be dysregulating for some children so they offer ‘sensory friendly sessions’ that take place at the first and last session of each day where the music is turned down and the lights are turned off. . The climbing in itself will provide your child with proprioceptive and touch inputs which usually act as organising inputs. There are some children that may find this stimulation too much and will require close monitoring.Clues your child might need a break include;

Pale or bright red face Warm body and face Dilated pupils Complaining of stomach aches or headaches.

Preparing for your visitBefore visiting Clip ‘n Climb we would recommend that you and your family complete the following: Read the Social Story prepared by Sprout to familiarise your children with what to expect when you visit. Print out the Visuals prepared by Sprout and pack them. Take a picture of your child in what they are wearing the morning of your visit in case they become lost. Dress your children in bright clothes so that they are easy to keep track of. Pack a bag with a few essentials: water bottle, snacks, blanket, activities for the car, calming items if

previously used by your child.

Quiet timeThere are several areas around Clip ‘n Climb which are ideal for having a rest or if your children need some quiet time to calm down. We would recommend the following areas:

- The ‘Rock Room’ (if vacant) - Seated area between the café and the

bathrooms If you need to leave Clip ‘n Climb for a break, you can do so. They will let you back in if it is still within the same hour.

Places to go for Heavy Muscle Work or StimulationFor many children, Heavy Muscle work can be calming for their bodies, or increase their arousal levels if they are feeling sluggish. The following activities have been identified as appropriate places to seek ‘Heavy Muscle Work’ input.

Climbing up the Spider Tower and completing other activities in the Cheeky Monkey Climb zone Seated area between the bathroom area and the café

You can come up with other ways to incorporate Heavy Muscle Work activities into your visit, such as: Animal walks or marching from one location to another. Wall pushes Pack fidget or squeeze toys in your child’s backpack.

Tips

Call ahead and chat to the staff about your child if you have any questions or concerns prior to your visit. Speak to your child’s Occupational Therapist before your visit if you have any specific concerns or questions

about your visit. During the school holidays and on Public Holidays Clip ‘n Climb can become very busy. We would recommend

trying to visit during term (on a weekday if possible) to avoid the big crowds. Clip ‘n Climb Berwick recommend completing the first or final session of the day as there are fewer people.

Use the Sprout Visuals to make choices about the activities you will do. A timer (sand timer or timer on your phone) could be used to transition between activities. Before you go, plan your visit. How long do you want to stay? What activities do you want to try?
