REFLECTION #2
In Emmer/Evertson Case Study 3.4 (page 57), the authors provide an example of a teacher’s difficulties in an Algebra I class. Regretfully, many of the concerns in this class are very, very similar to what you will encounter with your classes.
Read through the case study and determine how you might change how the class is running. You can change anything…the journal, homework, the assessments. Explain what you would do and why you would do it.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN ACADEMICS
Learn about your students
Ideas: Mr. Skaar has students guess answers to questions
about him. After responding to their guesses, he has them make a
quiz about themselves. He collects them and then, in front of the class, guesses an answer on each of their quizzes.
Also gives them a pre-test about U.S. History…they retake the same test at end of year and compare what they now know.
DAILY QUESTIONS & JOURNAL PROMPTS
Great way to make use of time while you are taking attendance and collecting late work (Mrs. Skaer)
We need to demonstrate good writing during EVERY subject
Students can store their notebook/journal in your classroom
Proper sentence structure? Spelling?
READING Reading needs to be taught in all subject areas.
Do not presume your students know how to read. Students in physics can be successful even if they have a 4th grade
reading level…but ____________
Math, Science, Social Studies, English…. YOU need to teach the students how to read the textbook. Do a “book walk”
Chapter headings, section headings, highlighted words Table of Contents/Index Illustrations Charts/Tables Word Problems
YOU MUST TEACH THESE…Make no presumptions about what students know
GETTING STUDENTS INVOLVED

MAKE IT FUN!!
Learning should not be boring
Do not rely on worksheets…very dull
Vocabulary Practice Pick 8 prominent words from your unit We are going to make a game out of them.
REMEMBER…
“Most learners these days are accustomed to active learning and are critical of presenters who don’t offer it…….”
“Learners would rather experience a crude attempt at active learning than sit through a lecture for an entire presentation.
Your active learning lessons do not have to be perfect and you have little to lose by trying them out.”
WHERE LEARNING BREAKS DOWN
Task Analysis Taking apart each step of the process you are teaching. Looking at the nitty gritty Looking at the details allows you to question:
Is there enough processing time? Can student keep up with lecture?
Guided notes Pictures to help them visualize (“zoo animals”) Let them “hear” it…
In math, each tiny little step…stop along the way
GO BACK AND CHECK…..
Be sure to have something to pull student attention at beginning of class – even something as simple as a picture on the board.
You want to get their attention and keep them engaged.
Go back and add to them if something is missing My goal is for you to be a fun, exciting teacher!! You need to capture student attention & help them understand
how this learning applies to their life.
