With Rev. Kati Collins

The Sycamore Tree This Spring, I loved reading scripture in our New Members Class with some of our longest and newest attendees at St Luke. I enjoy reading the Bible on my own, but I love reading the Bible with other people even more. This practice is helpful when we encounter a passage we don’t understand, because others can help shed light on the meaning. And it’s fun and sometimes challenging when it’s a passage you know so well, because you always learn something new. But when it comes to scripture that has been used to exclude and discipline us or used in a way that hurt us deeply, reading with others can be either terrifying and frustrating or, when grace abounds, give healing and redemption for those scriptures, our faith, and our relationships.

I have heard several of our St Luke friends say things that struck a joyful chord in my heart. I’ve started writing some of the quotes down and putting them on my whiteboard, but I would love to have our community hear how we interpret the Living Word of God with love and grace. I think there are people who need the kind of experience we share at St Luke in their lives.

So, I’m creating a podcast (an internet radio show) for reading scripture from a personal perspective. We begin with the story of Zacchaeus. Just as he climbs a tree to get a better look at Jesus, I will be inviting people from St. Luke to read scripture with me, hoping to meet Jesus in a new way! It’s a little bit of game show meets monastic centering prayer, so it aims to be fun and inspiring. The texts will come from the Revised Common Lectionary, which actually gives us a series on the letters of Paul and will follow our worship service scriptures. We will begin releasing episodes on September 3, and we will have someone at our Resource Fair in September to help you find the podcast app on your phone. Until then, you can check out the first episode and add the podcast to your favorites by going to our website or searching for The Sycamore Tree wherever you listen to podcasts.

Peanut Butter Sunday

On August 4, you are encouraged to bring jars of peanut butter to contribute to the High Plains Food Bank. Non-perishable grocery items, empty egg cartons, and paper sacks are also accepted every week. The Mission Committee sponsors this ongoing project.

Do you have trouble remembering to bring peanut butter? The food bank is always in need of monetary donations as well; note “HPFB” on the memo line of your check.

Congratulations to Tyler and Abby Wingo who were wed on July 13 in Austin. We wish them beautiful days ahead with lots of memories to cherish.

What s a Resource Fair?

A plan is in the works to hold St. Luke’s first Resource Fair sometime in September. A resource fair is a convenient way to share information, get hands-on technology help, ask questions, etc. It will be an informal gathering. Details will be announced as plans unfold.

Quilt Club

The Quilt Club is continuing its summer break in August. They will begin meeting again in September at 1 p.m. each Tuesday.

All Are Welcome for LOGOS By Darcy Hargis

This year we are going to try something new. We want to invite ALL ages to attend our Wednesday night LOGOS program. The program will include a time for worship, dinner, and a Bible study. Anyone between the ages of 5-105 is welcome to attend. There will be Bible studies available for all age groups. Childcare will be offered for those who are not old enough to attend. This will be a great time for everyone to participate in LOGOS.

We will be hosting a "Sneak Peek" night on August 28 for everyone to come out and get a taste for the new year. The new program will be from 6:00-7:30 p.m., and all ages are going to want to come to all parts. The cost for this fun year will be as follows. School-age children: $100/year for the first child and $75/year for each child after the first. Adults: $35/semester; you will also need to obtain your own copy of The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis for Bible study. Scholarships are available for all groups.

If you have any questions, please ask anyone on the LOGOS Committee. We are excited about a new year and program and can't wait to see you on August 28 at 6:00 p.m.

Mission Committee Report By Dale Ballard

As autumn approaches, the Mission Committee is gearing up for a busy time of the year. We have our tried-and-true mission opportunities, plus a couple of new projects.

Laundry Love is a national organization that provides opportunities to take over a laundromat for an afternoon. See more about that on page 1.

Community Garden is still in the planning stage. Anyone with ideas about this mission, contact any member of the Mission Committee.

We will continue our relationship with Mesa Verde Elementary School through Partners in Education. Watch emails, minute for mission, and church bulletins for opportunities to serve. School starts on August 13. The teachers and staff are very appreciative of our support.

The Amarillo College Food Pantry needs food items year-round.

High Plains Food Bank appreciates your financial support. Make checks to St. Luke Presbyterian and notate “HPFB” in the memo line.

Watch for future announcements for upcoming missions.

The Mission Committee routinely supports: ✓ Amarillo College Food Pantry - Contact Marcie Robinson. ✓ Amarillo Children's Home - Contact JoAnn Jolley. ✓ Eveline Rivers Sunshine Cottage - Contact Sallie Amason. ✓ Heal the City - a free clinic for persons in need ✓ Meals on Wheels of Amarillo - Contact Dale Ballard. ✓ The Hope and Healing Place - Contact Marcie Robinson. ✓ Partners in Education - Contact Stacy Clopton Yates. ✓ Helping Hands - Contact Tom Heyde. ✓ Prayer Shawl Ministry / Threads of Love - Contact Ann Hefner and

Love Carved in Stone: A Fresh Look at the Ten Commandments, by Eugenia Anne Gamble, helps us reframe the way we look at and live in the world. Each lesson begins with an exploration of one of the Ten Words in its biblical context. From there, we consider a moment from Jesus’ life

that shows how he lived out the Word. We then consider the Word for our own lives and contexts. We conclude with an invitation to pray with the Word in our personal devotions.

Summertime has been full of fun! We have taken opportunities to serve in our community, we have fellowshipped together, and we have taken time for some much-needed rest and refueling. Now, August has arrived, and with it, the start of school and a significant shift in our daily activities as we resume our monthly meetings and goings-on. This month is a perfect time to take stock of our giving as we get back into a routine. Giving Statements be emailed by the first of September; please watch your email. Take just a moment to verify that your gifts have been recorded correctly. Thank you to everyone who utilized bill pay or online giving to continue to support St. Luke during times that you couldn’t be physically present this summer. If you haven’t tried these options or have questions about them, you are encouraged to attend the Resource Fair in September to learn more!

Need to Report a Property Concern?

The Property Committee has divided up its many responsibilities. If you have questions or property needs, please refer manse issue to Tim Lacey, church building issues to Eldon Wingo, and yard and janitorial matters to Tom Heyde. Jan Pennington is stepping in as moderator through the end of 2019.

Presbyterian Women By Margaret Heyde

Did anyone get to a summer retreat at Mo-Ranch or another camping site this summer? I would like an update if you went for rest and relaxation or were lucky enough to meet with Christian women in a gathering.

St. Luke Women will begin on the second Wednesday in September at 9:30 a.m. This year’s study will be Love Carved in Stone, lessons about the Ten Commandments. Do you have your study book yet? Fill out the order slip on page 6 to purchase one or order directly from the PW website www.presbyterianwomen.org/horizons.

It’s almost time to set aside the first Friday of each month for Church Women United. On September 6, we will learn about The Pavilion while meeting at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4713 I-40 West. Diana Fielder will present the program. We also would like to honor past Unit Presidents. See the September Epistle for more details.

I will be leaving on September 13 for the CWU in Texas General Assembly in Dallas/Ft. Worth. I will report on this meeting as your Moderator and as the Area 1 Moderator.

Have you ever thought about joining a bunch of women who “Agree to Differ, Resolve to Love, and Unite to Serve?” Consider joining Presbyterian Women.

Seminar to Return

This year’s St. Luke Seminar, to be held October 4-6, focuses on “Understanding Paul.” Each of the three sessions will be co-moderated by Jim Allison and Phillip Periman. Jim and Phillip, along with Rev. Kati Collins, Mark Morey, and Kary Wingo, will facilitate small group discus-sions to conclude each session. Registration will begin September 1.

If you would like to prepare for the seminar by reading in advance, the following books (available at the Amarillo Public Library) are suggested: Paul: A Biography by N. T. Wright, (a radical look at the Apostle Paul illuminating the humanity and remarkable achievements of this intellectual who invented Christian theology), St. Paul: The Apostle We Love to Hate by Karen Armstrong (another look at St. Paul as the first Christian writer and a significant influence on the spread of Christianity throughout the world), and What Paul Meant by Gary Wills (an analysis illuminating how Paul, writing on the road and in the heat of the moment, and often in the midst of controversy, galvanized a movement and offering us the best reflection of those early times).

A seminar page for the event has been added to our website. You may link to it from the ‘Home’ page or the ‘Events’ tab. Feel free to share this information with those who might be interested.
