Built over a century ago, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Irish faithful who were the first to call this church their parish. For apart from the countless sacrifices made by that first generation of faithful to build a suitable house of prayer and divine worship for the greater glory of God, this beautiful church would not exist. Our beautiful stained-glass windows, perhaps the most stunning feature of the church, have been newly restored. Rendered in the Munich Pictorial style, they depict scenes from the life of Christ as well as images of various angels and saints. The careful observer will discern elements from the Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles which together make up the style known as Venetian Gothic. Bishop Paprocki consecrated the new main and side altars in 2012 and established the church as a personal parish on New Years Day, 2014. The liturgy celebrated at St. Rose follows the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite, and employs primarily the ancient Latin language. On Sundays, translations of both the ordinary and propers of the Mass are provided. To follow daily Mass you may wish to invest in a daily Latin English Missal available at the rectory or download an app like IMass. Internet access is available in church at StRoseChurch (password: latinmass). Make sure to mute your device while in church. Also, St. Roses state-of-the-art heating and cooling system assures a comfortable environment year round in which to pray and worship. A Land Flowing With Milk & Honey

In the Book of Exodus, God speaks to Moses at the burning bush, saying, “I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (Ex. 3:8).

Obviously, this expression suggests a bountiful land — much better than Egypt. Nevertheless, what do we imagine when we hear the words milk and honey? I suspect lots of dairy farmers and millions of industrious honeybees housed in hives overflowing with honey! But how does such imagery suggest a bountiful land? Besides, are milk and honey really that nutritious?

It turns out, what the Torah means by milk and honey is not what modern parlance suggests. According to the late Jewish Biblical scholar Nahum Sarna, the milk of the Promise Land refers to goat’s milk, and thus “a land flowing with milk … suggests ample pasturage and the prospect of much meat, hide, and wool.” As for the honey of the Promise Land, rather than the honey produced by bees, the Torah is referring to “the thick, sweet syrup produced from dates”. “Milk and honey”, explains Sarna, “were considered among the chief necessities of human life in the ancient Near East, and their combination was thought to constitute a highly nutritious diet — milk being rich in protein and the dried date rich in carbohydrates.” Indeed, “some Arab tribes are known to subsist for months at a time solely on milk and honey.”

By speaking of a land flowing with milk and honey, God assured Moses that the bounty of the Promise Land would amply sustain human life in an ideal way. But to get there, the Israelites first had to traverse the wilderness. Similarly, we must pass through, “mourning and weeping, this vale of tears” before reaching the ultimate Promise Land of eternal life. Thus, as the barren wilderness can hardly be compared to the plentiful and nutritious Promise Land, let us always remember what St. Paul assures us in today’s reading: “the sufferings of this time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come, that shall be revealed in us” (Rom. 8 :18).

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING

Marriage is the first step in starting a family, but couples may feel the need to space the births of their children. What options are there for couples who wish to follow the teachings of the Catholic Church?

In an accessible Q&A format, Jason Evert explains the biological, spiritual and relational benefits of NFP, which is 99% effective in accurately spacing births.

Pure Intimacy will help readers understand the many graces of NFP, helping them build stronger marriages and thus stronger families. This 42-page booklet is available on the vestibule rack.

PSR SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS Needed for the 2018-2019 School Year. When asked what would a substitute teacher need to do, one teacher replied;

“In the class I teach they would indicate which student reads a portion of the lesson, then they would read the last section or summary of the lesson, and finally talk through the questions at the end of the lesson.”

Please prayerfully consider passing on our Faith to our youth. This would only be occasionally and if you are unable to teach the Sunday that you are asked to cover, you could decline. You can specify if there is a particular age group that you are more comfortable with. Class time is Sunday 9:15 - 10:15 am

ST. ROSE BUMPER STICKERS: Are available in vestibule. $1.50 each. Please place money in gold donation box on wall.
