What’s Happening around G.W.S.S.

Premiers Reading Challenge

Gladstone West State School is delighted to be part of the 2018 Premiers Reading Challenge which commenced on Monday 14th May and closes on Friday 24th August. All students received a school reader record sheet form so they can participate.

Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities.

This year the premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2018 challenge is to engage more students then ever before.

Morning Break—continues in Term 3

GWSS along with our P&C would like to invite our parents along to the Parent Room under C Block for a cuppa each morning from 8.20am—8.45am. Save yourself a drive to the coffee shop and purchase it right here at school.

Premier Reading Challenge closes on Friday 24th August.

School Performance—Prep—Year 6 “Scien-tastic”

All students in Prep to Year 6 are invited to attend the ’Scien-tastic” performance to be held at the school on Friday 17 August. This performance involves great science experiences with wonderfully visual outcomes and plenty of humorous fun.

The cost per student is $6.00 and is payable no later than Monday 13 August 2018. Permission slips went home with all students last week. Please complete these permission notes and return it along with your payment to the office or class teacher as soon as possible.

LIBRARY BAGS

Timely reminder. As per our school booklist 2018, ALL students require a library bag (40cm x 30cm). Kindly ensure your child brings a library bag to school on their scheduled library day. (With the phasing out of single use plastic bags, our library will no longer have spare bags for students to use.) Library bags help protect our books as they are transported. We encourage all students to borrow resources from our school library for interest and enjoyment purposes.

Library News

BOOKCLUB

Bookclub Issue 5 has been distributed to the children last week. It closes online on the 6th August 2018. So orders need to be in by the 5th August.

Medication Volunteers

Attention Parents

Parents are not to be driving into the school via the Quoin Street entrance to drop off or pick up students.

This is reserved only for Students with Disabilities who have arrangements already put in place or sometimes students with a major injury requiring drop off which has been approved by the principal.

No other vehicles are to drive into the school as student safety is compromised.

Thank you.

Parents/caregivers are reminded that all medication given to students at school must be prescribed by a doctor, a medication form must be completed and medication stored at reception where it will be administered to students. Parents are asked to ensure a CURRENT green medical authorisation form is completed.

EPIPENS

Please make sure you have replaced any Epipens that may be out of date. These are stored at the office (unless alternative arrangements have been made). A new green form must also be completed for 2018, at the office. Please update any action plans and contact details at the office if needed.

Any parents wanting to volunteer in their child/ren’s classroom or Tuckshop must come down to the office and fill in a new Volunteers form for the 2018 Year. All Volunteers must sign in at the office and collect a lanyard to be worn while in the school grounds.

School Safety Uniform Policy

At Gladstone West State School, our policy states students must wear a Blue jumper or jacket. We do sell the school jackets at the uniform shop. With winter here we are noticing different styles

and colours. Please do not send your child in anything else as I will be asking them to take the

jumper or jacket off. Please remember no hoodies allowed either as this is a Workplace Safety issue, especially when a child pulls the hoodie from the back of another child.

In regards to shoes, I have allowed any closed in shoes, sports joggers/runners. We had some young girls show students their black leather shoe which is fine. No boots are allowed, especially with heels as this is a trip hazard for students.

Once again thank you in your understanding in this matter if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me and ask.
