Somerset Elementary Schools Grade 4 Remote Learning Guide Week 4 : May 4th-May 8th District Unit: Oceans! Grade 4, Week #4 Focus: What is an Ocean? Directions: UPDATE- Parent FAQs: How will my child “submit” their work? This should be flexible to meet your needs. Families have options for how they will collect/submit student work. Families can collect work samples (in a box, folder, notebooks, etc.), submit work to a teacher on Google Classroom, or send pictures/videos to their teacher. How much time should my child spend working on these activities? This should be flexible to meet the needs of your family. A timeframe for Elementary students may range from 1 - 3 hours per day. This does not need to be all at once. Take breaks. Contact your classroom teacher if needed. Can I adjust this learning plan for my child? This plan is flexible. Each family is doing the best they can do. Contact your classroom teacher if you would like help to adjust this plan for your child. Why aren’t video links working? We apologize for the technical difficulties last week. Thank you for your patience. We have taken steps to fix the problem. If you continue to have difficulties viewing the videos, please contact your classroom teacher. They will be able to send you the link directly via email. Monday-Thursday : Students will read the Morning Message and then complete the activities listed either in Choice #1 OR Choice #2. These activities will incorporate all academic areas. If you are unable to complete an activity for that day, please do it when it is convenient for your family, but try to complete it by the end of the week. If you would like to complete both Choice #1 & Choice #2 activities of the day, that is optional. Please do what works best for your child and family. Please feel free to mix and match choices each day (for example: you might do the reading from choice #1 and the math from choice #2) Friday is Family Fun Day. DAY #1-Monday, May 4, 2020 Interdisciplinary Lesson: Get to Know Our Oceans 

Morning Message: Happy Monday! This week we will dive deep into the ocean! The oceans of the world are vast! Today you will learn about the 5 oceans of the world and some unique facts about them. There are many treasures found in our precious oceans. The Atlantic Ocean is home to more than 1.000 shipwrecks including the Titanic! The Indian Ocean is home of the treasured Humpback Whale. Who would have thought that our beautiful oceans contained erupting volcanoes? Let’s dive in and learn more about the beauty of our oceans!

Science/Social Studies: ❏ Oceans for Kids Read this article about our oceans. 

 Reading & Writing: ❏ After reading about our oceans, write down 3 facts: 

1 fact you already knew about our oceans. 1 fact that you did not know and now find fascinating! 1 fact that you would like to learn more about. 

Math: ❏ The Black Sea is found in Europe and is about 730 miles long. 

The Red Sea is found between Asia and Africa and mesures 1,398 miles long. How much longer is the Red Sea than the Black Sea?  Write your answer in:  Expanded form and word form  Example: 456 in Expanded form is 400+50+6 Word form: Four hundred fifty-six.

Science/Social Studies: ❏ Oceans of the World Watch the video to learn all about our 5 

oceans. (Be sure to have a pencil and paper nearby to take notes for the ELA assignment) 

Reading & Writing:  ❏ After watching the video, write down 1 new fact that you learned 

about each of the 5 oceans. Math:  ❏ Walking on the beach, 10 shells were found on Monday. 45 shells 

were found on Tuesday. How many shells were found in all? If you put 6 shells in each box how many boxes would be needed for all the shells?  

❏ Greenland Codfish measured 0.751, 0.692, 0.75 and 0.752 meters. Put these fish in order from shortest to longest.

Interdisciplinary Lesson: Marine Life Morning Message: Good morning friends! Today your learning choices will uncover various animals that live in our oceans. Beautiful coral reefs are home to over 2 million species and 25% (one fourth) of the earth’s marine creatures are found here. Coral are “alive” and are tiny animals called polyps. These polyps range in size from the size of a pinhead up to the size of a basketball. As you go about your day consider how valuable these animals are to us and be aware of how we need to protect these precious life forms. Ok...Let’s get our scuba gear ready and do some EXPLORING!

Social Studies:  ❏ Watch the video Coral Reefs 101-National Geographic. 

Reading & Writing: ❏ After watching the video, write a detailed paragraph (5-8 

sentences) about what you’ve learned about coral reefs. Use this expository planner to help you organize your thoughts.  

Math: ❏ Most coral reefs are not deeper than 250 feet. If you measure 

an ocean depth of 340 feet how much deeper is it than a normal coral reef? Convert your answer to yards. Hint: 3 feet = 1 yard

Science ❏ Read the article on Marine Biomes. 

Writing/Reading ❏ Research a plant or animal that lives in a marine biome. Write a 

detailed paragraph (5-8 sentences) to reflect your new learning. Feel free to use this expository planner to organize your ideas. 

Math: ❏ Most clams are only a few inches long but the Giant Clam found 

in the South Pacific measures up to 4.8 feet long! How long would a row of 9 Giant clams be? Hint: Don’t forget to include the decimal in your answer. Use mental math to be sure your answer makes sense.  

❏ A puffin is a sea bird and can flap its wings 400 times per minute. How many times would its wings flap in 1 hour? Hint: 60 minutes in 1 hour.

Today you will take a creative look at marine life as the ocean can be a perfect backdrop for heartwarming tales of adventure and also evoke deep emotions through poetry. Discover the beauty of the sea turtle, and showcase your sketching/drawing ability as you label the anatomy of the sea turtle. Did you ever wonder why the ocean is salty? The makeup of the salt in most oceans is 3.5%, and today you will learn where this salt comes from. Get ready to listen to the secrets and mysteries of our oceans. Enjoy your new learning!

Science: Step by step Sea Turtle drawing  ❏ Using the link above, create a drawing/sketch of a sea turtle. 

Label the following parts : Head, scutes, flippers, shell, eyes and nose. Explain in 2-3 sentences how a turtle uses its scutes and flippers.  

Reading & Writing:.  ❏ Read the short story The Birth of the Turtles. It is a great 

narrative with detailed setting and strong character development.  

1. Please copy and paste this story into a google doc. 2. Then, add character dialogue to strengthen the story.  3. Share your completed story with me.  

Math: ❏ The Beluga Whale lives in the Arctic in the winter but migrates 

south in the summer. If 2/10 of the whales were eating and the remaining whales were diving what fraction of the Beluga Whales were diving? What is this fraction in simplest form?  Hint: In simplest form you divide the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Science:  ❏ Ever wonder why the ocean is salty?  

Watch video- Why is the Ocean Salty?  Write 3 to 5 sentences explaining what you learned.  Reading & Writing:  ❏ Read the following poems: Ocean Poems. Write a paragraph 

analyzing the two poems. How do they make you feel? What is the mood/tone of the poems? Can you find any examples of alliteration, personification, rhyme? 

Math: ❏ An electric eel gets its oxygen by “gulping” air at the surface. It 

takes a breath every 10 minutes. How many breaths will an eel take in one and a half hours?  

❏ The Arctic Ocean is the smallest of the world’s 5 oceans. The first man to make it across the Arctic Ocean was in 1896. How many years ago did that journey take place?

Interdisciplinary Lesson: Plastic Pollution Morning Message: Good morning stellar students. Today we will think about how humans can help reduce the impact of plastic pollution. As you complete the activities carefully consider what plastic is doing to our marine life and think about how you can reduce that effect. Share your thoughts through writing and drawing about what you can do today to keep our planet beautiful!

 Reading & Writing: ❏ Read Plastic in the Ocean. Write an opinion paragraph sharing 

which of the many problems listed is most important. Feel free to use this opinion planner to organize your thoughts.   

Math: ❏ If a male walrus weighs 1,876 pounds and a female weighs 1,211 

pounds, what is the sum of the weight of both the male and female walrus? How much more does the male weigh?  

❏ There are 32 sea turtles . Each sea turtle has 4 flippers. How many flippers are there all together? Round this number to the nearest hundreds place.

Science:  ❏ Create a colorful poster or Google Doc encouraging your 

classmates to reduce their use of plastics  Reading & Writing:  ❏ Read 10 Tips to Reduce Plastic Pollution. Create a comic strip 

illustrating ways to reduce plastic pollution. Here is a comic strip template for you to use if you’d like. 

 Math: ❏ A salmon swims 30 miles from its birthplace in the river to the 

ocean. It takes 6 hours to get to the ocean. How fast (miles per hour) is the salmon swimming?  

❏ A Cookie Cutter Shark lost 84 teeth in one month (4 weeks). If he loses the same number of teeth each week. How many teeth is he losing each week?
