WI have been deeply inspired and motivated by all things theatrical since I joined the Cavelero Drama Club as an 8th grader in 2009. I was involved in “The Boarding House Reach”, the first full production performed at Cavelero. That same year we put on a second production, “The Defective Detective”. At that time I was vice president of the club and worked as a stage hand.

The following school year (2010-2011) I was ready to be as involved as I possibly could. I was voted president of the club and was given the title of Producer. I collaborated very closely with our Director on our production of “Maul of the Dead”. With a bigger cast and more involvement, the quality of the production improved, and the Drama Club began to grow.

In fall 2011 I moved onto Lake Stevens High School and was a stage hand for “James and the Giant Peach”. Even though I enjoyed being a part of the high school’s drama club, I missed the Cavelero club. For this reason, I was delighted when students asked if I could come back to direct this year’s production of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. I took some time to think about it and realized that I wanted to do anything I could to keep theater alive at Cavelero.

Directing this musical has been the most exciting thing I have ever done and has confirmed for me that theater is my passion. The cast and crew have been amazing and are the most talented group of people I have ever worked with. Their families have helped make this production a success!

Now, sit back, relax, and prepare to be immersed into a world of pure imagination! -Steven Ortiz

Dave Zerbst’s day job privileges him with the opportunity to teach Physical Science and Biology here at Cavelero. As a student almost 30 years ago, he had a blast and learned many life-long lessons in his own high school drama program. He is again having a blast, this time by structuring and facilitating students’ opportunities to themselves learn through the multifarious experiences to be found on both sides of the proscenium. He has seen his actors and stage crew stretch their limits by redefining themselves in the supportive context of the community that naturally emerges in the theatre. He has been very pleased and impressed to see how students have developed new organizational, social, expressive and artistic talents. Most of all he is happy to see how students have risen to the challenges of this production by growing ever more into themselves and developing confidence in their own capabilities. Mr. Zerbst wishes also to express his gratitude to the many volunteers who have made it possible for this production to be a success. Without their dedication and passion for this project, it simply couldn’t have happened.
