BLESSINGS ON MOTHER’S DAY!On this Mother’s Day, I would like to extend my thanks and my blessings to all the women of our parish. Please note I didn’t say in that last sentence, “…to all the moms of the parish,” but, “…to all the women of the parish.” That was intentional! As St. Pope John Paul II beautifully taught, eve-ry woman has a fundamentally maternal vocation and identi-tythis is a big part of the “feminine genius,” to use that wonderful phrase so favored by the saintly pope. At every moment of their lives, women are called to this maternal vo-cation in some form. To all the mothers of our parish, we pray for you as you live out this critical motherhood in our Church and our world. But we also pray today for women who are single, and share their maternal gifts with the rest of us in the church through their compassion, service, and pray-er on our behalf. And of course we can’t forgot the nuns and sisters of our Church, who live a unique vocation to conse-crated spiritual motherhood that greatly enriches all of us in the Church. So to all of you, in all of the various ways you live out your maternal vocation, know you have our thanks and our prayers in a special way this day.!

YOUR MOTHER, MY MOTHER, OUR MOTHER!!

This Sunday is the Seventh Sunday of Easter, which is not exactly the sort of thing most people mark on their calendars. It also happens to be Mother’s Day, which absolutely IS something that most people mark on their calendars. And rightfully so!!!

The vocation of being a mother is a vocation of continual sacrifice. That sacrifice begins in the earliest stages of pregnancy with the physical toll on the mother as she grows a new human life within her. Then there is the sacrifice of caring for this tiny, little, helpless infant after birth which, while no doubt shared by both mom and dad, nonetheless seems in most cases to be car-ried to a greater degree by the mother. Then there are the various sacrifices as a child grows: teaching, admonishing, exhorting, cautioning; washing endless loads of laundry, buying clothes that get outgrown almost before they are out of the package; countless trips to soccer practice, theater practice, music practice; uplifting children when they are down, encouraging them when they are despairing, congratulating when they have accomplished something of note. And then there is that other big sacrifice: the sacrifice made when the day comes for that “little one,” now no longer little, to leave home and head out on their own into the big, bright world.!!

I’m sure with a little more reflection that this list of sacrifices would grow exponentially. But the primary point is this: motherhood is a vocation to love, and to love in a particularly sacrifi-cial way. !!

Each of us have our mothers to thank for these sacrifices. Every one of us have (or had) moth-ers who were presented with a different set of circumstances, demanding a different set of sacri-fices. There is no doubt some moms embraced those sacrifices more than others. In that respect, the only thing we all have in common is that none of us had moms who were perfect. All had their flaws and their times when they didn’t fully live up to the opportunities for heroic sacrifice presented to themjust as all of us, as their children, equally failed at times in living and being all we were called to be as their children. !!

But despite how different our backgrounds, and our mothers, may be, there is one thing that all of us, without exception, share. And that is that we have the Blessed Virgin Mary as our mother as well. She who is the Mother of God is Mother of the Church, and is in a very real way the mother of each one of us. She who is the sinless one, the holy tabernacle that contained the Lord of Life; she who is the Queen of Heaven and whom rank upon rank of angels honor as their queen, is your mother and mine. Even more, she delights in that task. She takes delight in you, and wishes to be for you everything a mother can be and more. She who is “our life, our sweetness, and our hope” wishes to guard and protect us from all harm, nurture the seed of faith that has been placed in our souls, and inspire us to follow without doubt, reservation, or hesita-tion her Divine Son.!!

101 years ago today, she appeared to three children at Fatima, Portugal to remind us about her motherhood, and to call the world (once again) to follow her Son. May we, her children, listen to her call, and following her example, become the living saints that Christ is calling us to be.!!God bless,!!

Fr. John Paul
