Some risk is part of everyday life. Some risk are easy to identify and others are hidden.

ACTIVITY – Identify Cause and Effect Students will list some risky behaviors and

the negative health effects that might be caused by this behavior.

EX. Risky behavior – Smoking Negative effects – cancer, yellow teeth, bad

breath, bad body odor, isolation, depression, etc.

You can not avoid all risks. If you play sports, you probably encounter many risks of injury. Wearing protective gear, warming up correctly and performing skills with proper form are ways to reduce these risks.

Consequences are the results of actions, and not all consequences cause harm. If I choose not to study for a test, I risk getting a low grade. If I choose to fight, I’m risking hurting myself and possibly others.

Playing a sport can have many benefits, but it can also lead to injuries. Four team sports cause 80% of all team sport injuries. Can you list them from most to least dangerous?

ACTIVITY – In the US, more than 30 million children play sports. 3.5 million are injured each year while playing.

Calculate the percentage of children who play sports without experiencing injury.

1 – Find the number of students that participate without injury

30 million – 3. 5 million = 26. 5 million

2 – 26.5 million divided by 30 million = 88.3

Practicing ‘prevention’ means taking steps to avoid something. This can be the best way to deal with risks.

TIPS – 1. Plan ahead2. Think about consequences3. Resist negative pressure4. Avoid risk takers5. Pay attention to what you are doing6. Know your limits7. Be aware of dangers

Abstinence is the conscious active choice not to participate in high-risk behaviors.

Ex. If you choose not to smoke, you will reduce your risk of developing cancer.

By practicing abstinence from risk behaviors, you take an active role in caring for your health. This will benefit each part of your health triangle.

List some healthy decisions that you’ve made recently. Can anyone tell them how they were influenced to make these decisions?
