HAPPY EASTER!!!
Welcome to Sts. Simon and Jude Church.
May the joy & blessings of Easter be with you and yours on this
beautiful day and always. We offer a word of thanks to all of our
parish staff, our societies and our liturgical ministers for their
hard work and effort in preparing and participating in our Holy
Week celebrations. You all did a great job in helping our parish-
ioners and guests experience the presence of the Lord during
these most special times of prayer and celebration.
As we approach the busy time of spring, our prayer is
that all of us together may find in the grace of this holy season
the strength and wisdom to bring the Good News of Christ to
more and more people. May we also renew and build up the
bonds of love and faith which draw us together as the Body of
Christ and may each of us in our homes, in our work places, in
our schools and in our neighborhood find lasting peace and
enduring hope. Blessed Easter to all of you!
JESUS IS RISEN LET US SING! Easter symbols are all about life. The lilies that bloom radiate living beauty. Easter eggs symbolize the life the breaks out of the tomb. The Easter candle burns brightly as a sign that light con-quers darkness, a light that brings life to all. The cross that graces so many Easter cards as well as the Easter candle itself, also reminds us that Easter is about death-and trans-formation. The symbols of life have within themselves the power of death. The lily gives up its bloom and the plant dies back re-treating into the bulb that nourished it. The egg pours out its life and the shell is left behind. The fire that is contained in the Easter candle can just as easily roar into a refining conflagration. Water, which all life needs, can also destroy. And the cross at its incep-tion was an instrument of death and hardly a symbol of life. This is the hard truth of the Easter message. Life comes at a price, and eternal life at the costliest price of all: the death of the only-begotten Son. Christ's death brings life, and is so radically trans-formative that even the very instrument of his death is seen today as a sign of life for all. The newly baptized are sealed with a cross of chrism on their forehead, a fragrant transformation of the ashes that graced us all at the beginning of Lent. The newly baptized died to sin in the bath of water and rose to life in Christ, and the rest of us renewed our baptismal commitment to follow Christ faithfully through life. This Easter day is a celebration and a com-mitment, a promise to leave the past behind and to walk in the newness of life.
As we sing in the Easter psalm, “This is the day the Lord has
made; let us rejoice and be glad”, on this most holiest of days, let
us gather to feast with family and friends , let us be sure to recall the reason for our celebration: Christ is risen! Alleluia!

HE IS RISEN! There are different readings that are read at the Masses on Easter Sunday. Depending on which
Mass you go to will determine which reading you hear. They all deal with the resurrection of Jesus,
but are told from different perspectives. No matter which one you hear today, the message is the
same. Jesus has risen from the dead. We are saved through His triumph over death and sin.
DO YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE RIGHT?
In the first reading St Peter attests to the resurrection of Jesus and tells that the Apostles were given the commission to tell others about
Him. By virtue of our baptism we are called to do the same thing. All of us are called to share the Good News about our Savior Jesus
Christ. We have been forgiven of our sins and receive new life through His resurrection. That is reason to shout for joy! We should share
this with everyone we meet.
THE EIGHT DAYS OF EASTER Today is Easter the most joyous day of our calendar. Did you know in the Church the celebration of Easter is eight days long? The day is
so important that it takes 8 days to unfold. The celebration of the resurrection continues for the season of Easter which is 50 days!
MARY MAGDALEN The Gospel from Luke tells us that Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalen. What makes Mary so special that Jesus would appear to her?
Mary was cured of her demons; she experienced his mercy and healing. She traveled with Jesus as he preached throughout the areas of
Judea. She walked along the road to Golgotha and was there at the crucifixion. Her faith and trust made her a worthy disciple, and she
was able to see the Risen Lord.
FIESTA NIGHT HAS BEEN CHANGED Mark your calendars – May 4th will be our annual celebration. We have some changes in store. Instead of our usual celebration we will be
celebrating with a kermes, which is a traditional church feast/fundraiser. We will have Mexican dances, games, crafts and of course deli-
cious traditional foods. Come join us!
NO CLASS There is no class today for our Easter holiday. We will resume classes next Sunday, April 8 th.

THE FULFILLMENT OF OUR HOPE
Many of us are aware that large percentages of millenni-
als, those between the ages of 18 and 30, describe them-
selves as “nones” or “seekers” when it comes to reli-
gious faith. It has been observed, or at least suggested,
that being a “none” or a “seeker” is an easy way out of
commitment. As long as we stand apart from a faith
community, or keep endlessly seeking, we need not
make a commitment to anything, let alone live by that
commitment. To a great extent being a “none” or a
“seeker” fits well into the narcissism of much of our
contemporary culture. We find much the same in those
who call themselves “spiritual” but not “religious”. It
follows the same principal of not having to commit one-
self to anything or any God. While many have criticized
this movement as another example of self absorption,,
there is another side to this equation that is oftentimes
missed.
The first thing we need to note is that vast numbers of
millenials are seeking. At the very least they recognize
that there is something missing in life, theirs and in gen-
eral, that material success and pleasure cannot satisfy.
Those who call themselves spiritual are seeking the tran-
scendent. The unfortunate part of all this is that no idea,
or ideology, or self-made spirituality, will ever satisfy
the deepest longings of the human heart, nor fulfill our
deepest longing for the fullness of life and the joy of
love. What every millennial who is thinking this
through comes to recognize sooner or later is that life
and love have no meaning if it all ends in death, the final
termination of the human person. Why keep on living?
Why bother to love? if in the end it all just ends. Now
the seeking begins.
What is said oftentimes of the millennial can also apply to a
great many people across the generational lines. For some it
is finding solace in one’s possessions, for others it is the size
of their bank account or home or the car they drive, for still
others it is an inordinate seeking for sensual pleasures, and for
others still it is an equally inordinate obsession with entertain-
ment and the escape from reality that it provides. Anyone
who is honest with himself or herself and slows down, takes a
breath, and really looks at themselves, would have to admit
that this is not a life but an existence. Ideas, ideologies, self
serving spiritualities, may help us exist but then do not help us
live. What helps us live fully and free, what thrusts us for-
ward into the great and exciting mystery of life itself, with its
joys and sorrows and the rich and rewarding journey that it is,
is the Other.
We who are graced with the gift of Christian faith, have
been given access to the God in the Person of Jesus
Christ. “Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father,
whoever has heard Me has heard the Father, for the Fa-
ther and I are One”. If we have not yet grasped this
great truth perhaps we need to hear the words of the
Lord just prior to the above statement as He addressed
St. Thomas, “I have been with you all this time and still
you do not know Me?” Can He ask us the same ques-
tion? The Risen Jesus truly is with us all this time, in
the Eucharist (His Body and Blood as Food for the jour-
ney), in the Word (He is life and peace), in the Church
(“whoever hears you - the Church – hears Me, “The
Spirit will guide you – the Church - into the fullness of
truth”), in the Commandments (the truth will set you
free) in one another (“whatsoever you do to the least of
My brothers and sisters you do to Me”), in reconciliation
given through the Church (“whose sins you forgive are
forgiven” “forgive not seven times but seventy times
seven times)”), in Jesus’ act of perfect mercy at Calvary
(“Father forgive them for they do not know what they
are doing”).
If we meditated on all of this seriously we can see how
thoroughly lifeless being a “none” or a perpetual
“seeker” or a “spiritual” person is. Only the man or
woman of committed Faith who acknowledges the
Creedal statement, “on the third day He rose from the
dead”, can truly enter into the beauty of life with all its
ups and downs. It is only a Person who can call us to
our noble goal of moving as St. Paul writes, “from glory
to glory”. It is only a Person who can lead us to true
love as we remember the words of St. John, “God is
love”. It is only one Person who can lead us to God, “I
am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. It is only a Person
who can fulfill the deepest longing for eternal life, “I
AM the resurrection and the life”.
That Person is Jesus Christ: not a figure out of history, not a
good-doer, much less a revolutionary, not a Messiah who only
reigns in a distant heaven far beyond our reach. This Christ is
alive and in our midst. He is as close as we allow Him to en-
ter into our lives. In the book of revelation Jesus tells us,
“Here I stand knocking at the door. If anyone opens the door
and let me in, I will dine with them and they with Me, and
give the victor the right to sit at my right hand”. The Lord has
left the tomb. He is victorious. He knocks once again at the
door of our hearts. Are we ready to let Him in and share with
Him His victory over sin and death?
Fr. John Maduri
REMEMBERING EASTER
I remember as a little kid, my neighbor who was only a
couple years older than me asked, “Why do you Christians
celebrate Easter? Isn’t that when Jesus died on the cross?
Seems weird.” At six or seven years old, I was confused by
the question, so I went and talked to my mom about it. She
explained that Easter is when Jesus rose from the dead,
Good Friday is the day that we remember his death. I went
back to my friend and told him. And he replied that it was
stupid to believe that a man could rise from the dead. I
tried to explain that Jesus was fully human but also fully
God, but he simply laughed and thought the whole thing
ridiculous. “Jesus was just a man like any other” he said,
“there was no resurrection.”
Now, as Christians, we hold of course that Jesus did rise
from the grave; that someday, we too will follow him and
have a restoration of our bodies. The fact that Jesus kept
the wounds on his hand and feet speaks volumes to the im-
portance of our physical bodies. We are not simply imma-
terial spirits inhabiting matter, but our bodies are a crucial
part of who we are. We are a synthesis of body and spirit.
Death is a tragedy precisely because of the separation of
these things. After our deaths, we will not continue on for
all eternity as spirits floating in heaven; no, we will receive
our bodies back at the final resurrection following the ex-
ample of Christ.
But this example is one that is often held to be no more
than a legend. My friend from my youth was not the first
person to deny Jesus’ Resurrection, nor will he be the last.
The fact that a man could rise from the dead, even a man
who was divine, is hard for our minds to grasp. There is
the very real danger of treating our Christian faith like
some sort of self-help school, making us better people. It
does, of course, do that, but if we stop there we are seri-
ously missing out. Jesus was more than a great teacher. He
claimed to be God. C.S. Lewis once made the point that we
can’t call Jesus a great teacher if we don’t first believe that
he is God. If he were merely a human being, his claim to
divinity would be absolutely preposterous! Lewis wrote
that Jesus is liar, lunatic, or the Lord. And all of this, all of
our beliefs that Jesus Christ is in fact the Word made flesh,
the Son of God, Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the di-
vine God-man; all of this hinges upon the Resurrection. If
Christ never rose from the dead, our faith is meaningless.
Saint Paul wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians, “If
Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so
is your faith.”
So what do we do when our deepest and most foundational
beliefs are under attack? A lot of people believe that the
only evidence we have for Christ’s resurrection comes
from the Bible. This makes it really hard to evangelize or
dialogue with people who do not share our belief in the
truth of the Gospels.
Thankfully, there is also a host of historical evidence at
our disposal, evidence which backs up our Christian faith
for Easter. The strongest evidence comes from the empty
tomb, the appearances that Jesus made to people after his
resurrection (At one point he appeared to over five hun-
dred people before he ascended into heaven), and the early
beginnings of the Church. For anyone interested in seek-
ing to learn more about the historical evidence, evidence
which has convinced even some of the most staunch athe-
ists, I would recommend a couple of books. The Son Rises
by William Lane Craig and The Case for Easter by Lee
Strobel are great starting points.
The Resurrection is a pivotal event in human history
where death was defeated. Our God was victorious over
the grave. He paved the way for us to follow him, through
death into the blessings of eternal life. Take some time this
Easter season to really reflect on the Resurrection and
what it means for us as Christians. May we allow it to sink
into our hearts and draw us closer to the God who loves us
enough to die and rise for us. Amen.
Jonah Soucy
