WayBackMachine Redesign

The WayBackMachine assignment was really interesting. Unlike designing a website from scratch there are certain guidelines one must follow when designing for a website that already exists. This changes the entire approach of the design process. For our assignment, Jill and I decided upon twitch.tv. Twitch is a live streaming service that many gamers and live streamers share content on as well as make their living. In comparison to many of the other “tech giants” such as Youtube, Facebook, etc which started in the 2002-2007 area, Twitch came late to the game in 2011. This gave the company a lot more time to develop and adapt their site to the growing internet marketplace. Therefore, even during the date of January 1st 2013 of which we picked for this assignment, the site was already well established and pretty well designed. We still managed to find some things that we felt could be better and those were the grounds for our redesign process. We started by making a high fidelity wireframe and site map of our redesign based upon the omission of content we deemed unnecessary as well as the inclusion of content which we deemed essential parts of the site. We felt that the boxes which explained what twitch is for were unnecessary because if the website is designed well enough and the content the user is looking for is easily found, the site would simply speak for itself. As for the other omitted tile, the “do you have an account?” section, we felt it was unnecessary as it is already available at the top of the page and that it was simply serving as a waste of space that could otherwise be taken up by streaming content. The main thing we added in the wireframe was the inclusion of a top channels section in addition to the already available top games section. We felt that once people come to twitch and find someone they enjoy watching that it would be nice to be able to find that person again rather than having to search for them by game especially as this limits that streamer to only playing one game. Once we were finished with those deliverables, we designed the high fidelity mockup. We divided it up top and bottom to maximize consistency across the mock up. We attempted to keep with the design standards twitch set forth, while also going for a more modern approach. The key thing added here that was not previously present in the wireframe is the chat box in the featured video. With interactivity between streamer and viewer being such a key aspect of twitch, we felt it was strange that it was available on every other video except for the featured one. We kept with the sans serif style twitch already had as well as included more purple to the site to give it a bit more color and to separate the featured video from the other content. We opted for larger buttons as they are more usable/accessible. Overall, our redesign was a fresh look which minimized unnecessary content and allowed for the main purpose of twitch to shine.
