Dear South Shore families,
Welcome Back from Spring Break! I hope that everyone had a fun and relaxing few days. Spring is here and excitement is in the air as we continue to have a wonderful year of learning here at South
Shore. As always, we greatly appreciate the combined efforts of all as we support our students in successfully meeting the highest of standards set before them!
It’s hard to believe that we are about to begin our last marking period of the 2017-2018 school year on April 13th. The beginning
of a new marking period is the perfect time to set goals for the next quarter. As we enter the month of April, our teachers and staff
continue to introduce and review rigorous academic skills and content across all grade levels. With roughly three weeks remaining before our PARCC testing weeks, it is imperative that our students
are present each day and eager to actively participate in applying the purposeful teaching and learning taking place. Please look at the testing calendar below. During this testing window, please
support your child by having them at school and on time each morning, having a good breakfast and well rested from the night
before. We thank you in advance for your support as students excel for the rest of the school year.

French Corner Bonjour South Shore families,
In April at the French corner we will work on an elaborate description of spring to help with our reading and writing practice. We will learn new songs to help us review old vocabulary and add new. The fun with conjugating verbs will continue through games and acting in classic stories, like Goldilocks and The Three Bears and The Raven and the Fox.
Merci,
Maria Mihova French Teacher

News from the Panda Café
Many of our students are now buying lunches on a daily basis. Our café staff works very hard in the cafeteria to serve daily a healthy, fun and nutritious lunchexperience for them. Because of this increase to the number of lunches being served, our students sometimes do not have enough time to eat that nutritious lunch without rushing.
We are going to begin an experiment after our spring break. On a daily basis, we will be serving our “Grab and Go” lunch boxes at a station located in the cafeteria and not go through the serving line. At this station, they will have a choice of the box lunch andmilk along with whole fruit and bagged vegetables. On Fridays, we will serve boxed pizza lunches.
During this trial throughout April, we will be try this process and then evaluate to see how well this worked for the children. Please feel free to give us your input and any additional suggestions.

Guidance Corner
During the month of April, I will be conducting Career Awareness Lessons. In Kindergarten through 2nd grade classes, we will be focusing on exploring different careers and the tools they use. In 3rd through 5th grade classes, we will be focusing on career inventories and career clusters. On Friday, April 27th, we will have Dress to Impress Day. All students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their desired future career. A reminder will be sent out as we get closer to the date. These lessons will help students understand the connection between school and the world of work and to plan for and make a successful transition from school to postsecondary education and/or the world of work. Please contact me at (410) 222-3865 or [email protected] if you have any questions, comments or concerns about our Career lessons.

Bicycle Safety: Myths & Facts
Myth: My child doesn’t need to wear a helmet on short
rides around the neighborhood.
Fact: The majority of bike crashes happen near
home. Wearing a helmet at all times helps develop good
habits.
Myth: Any helmet will work just as well as a bicycle
helmet.
Fact: Only a bicycle helmet is made specifically to
protect the head from any fall that may occur while
biking.
Myth: I should buy a bicycle that my child will grow
into.
Fact: Oversized bikes are especially dangerous. Your
child does not have the skills and coordination needed
to handle a bigger bike and may lose control.
Myth: It’s safer for my child to ride facing traffic.
Fact: Your child should always ride on the right, with
traffic. Riding against traffic confuses or surprises
drivers.
Myth: Bike reflectors and a reflective vest will make it
safe for my child to ride at night.
Fact: It’s never safe for your child to ride a bike at night.
How can I tell if a helmet will keep my child safe? You should only buy a helmet that meets the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Check for this label inside helmet.
How should a helmet fit?
It should be worn squarely on top of the head, covering
the top of the forehead. If it is tipped back it will not
protect the forehead. It fits well if it doesn’t move
around on the head or slide down over the eyes when
pulled. Adjust chin strap to fit snugly.
