IN THE SWING OF THINGS…
Some of us can remember when school started after Labor Day. (Maybe only the
“experienced” teachers can remember such a time.) But those days have been
gone for a while. We are finishing up our 4th week of school, just about half-way
through the first quarter, and getting ready to
enjoy Labor Day. It’s been a really smooth four
weeks. What’s been happening?
PreK students …love making apples and
caterpillers, doing jobs, drawing, and snack.
Kindergartners ….have learned to cut, color and
glue. They’ve been to the Library, played on the
playground, and learned words like the, little, to.
1st Graders...have done tests on the computers, written about habitats, learned
number bonds, and know how to dump their trays after lunch.
2nd Graders…have had fun learning about math sentences and measurement, PE,
music, art, computer and Spanish as well as recess.
3rd Graders… like writing with 6 Traits, rounding numbers, and learning plant parts.
4th Graders…have enjoyed their labs in Science, meeting their teachers, setting up
writing binders, Indiana history, and IXL.
5th Graders…have learned to write theme statements, states and capitals, adding
decimals and like their new schedules.
6th Graders…love experiments in Science, doing service hours, expressing them-
selves through writing, and learning how to read the Bible.
7th Graders…have been busy learning about infinite numbers and measurement,
foreign countries and capitals, putting characters on trial, getting to know their
teachers, and the best design for paper airplanes.
8th Graders… have learned about aerodynamics, using mnemonic devices in Litera-
ture, pre-Revolutionary war times, and measurement and volume. (cont.)

IN THE SWING OF THINGS…
Our teachers are getting to know their students and they’ve designed lots of great learning
experiences for them. They are getting to know their teaching team members and new
subject matter. On average, our teachers spend four hours each month in professional
learning time together. Led by Master Teacher, Denise Wilson, this time together allows
our teachers to structure learning in a way that ensures continuity and support for all of
our students. The culture of learning is alive and well for the 2015-2016 school year.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
The 2nd annual Kindergarten Labor Day Parade took place today.
Led by Miss Angermeier twirling her baton, the students
celebrated the holiday patriotically.

STEM In ACTION ----Integrating science, technology, engineering, and math to solve real world problems. Our 5th grade scientists have been learning all about scientific inquiry.
They began the school year with an experiment on bread to see which
method would keep sandwiches the freshest for the longest amount of
time. After stating their hypotheses and identifying variables, the
scientists concluded that plastic baggies were the best method at
keeping sandwiches fresh. Next they moved on to data collection and
interpretation. This week alone they have observed different fabrics
fibers under microscopes, measured forces in Newtons using a spring
scale, compared masses of objects using balances, measured length and
height in metric units, used graduated cylinders to measure the volumes
of liquids, and utilized digital thermometers to measure temperatures in
Celsius and Fahrenheit. Whew! Sounds like these scientists could use a 3
day weekend.

ST. BARNABAS SCHOOL ANNUAL WALK-A-THON
The school-wide Walk-A-Thon will be held on Friday, September 25th.
This is an early dismissal day at 12:45. There is no Aftercare on early dismissal days.
Miss Hoefling is in need of several adult volunteers to stand at different corners throughout Hill Valley
during the Walk-A-Thon to make sure the students stay on course and to provide safety on the course. If
you are interested in volunteering during any of the times listed below, please email Miss Hoefling at mhoe-

FATHER—DAUGHTER DANCE Saturday, September 26th
6:30-8:30pm
Please join us for this year’s Father/Daughter dance in the St. Barnabas gymnasium. All Dads/Grandpas/Uncles etc. are welcome.
The cost is $25 per Dad and the girls are free with paid adult. We plan to have lots of things for the girls to do. Photo Booth, Craft, DJ, Nail station, Gift Card giveaways, and plenty of snacks, treats and drinks.
If you are interested in purchasing tickets please send in the bottom of the flyer with payment to Laura Bridgewater. We will not send home actual tickets but your name will be on the sign in sheet the night of the dance. Tickets will also be available after 9am and 11am Mass in September.
Tickets will not be sold at the door the night of the dance. Last day to purchase is September 25th.

DISMISSAL AFTER MONDAY CHOIR PRACTICES
There are 92 students staying on Monday afternoons for liturgical choir practice. That’s great! We are
asking parents who come to pick up their students to line their cars up in the lot just as we do for regular
dismissal and one of the teachers will dismiss the cars after all students are loaded. It will work best if no
cars pull up in along the drive and wait for students to come out. Thank you!

SECOND ANNUAL TRIVIA NIGHT—Saturday, September 12th.
After a very successful trivia night last year, it’s back by popular demand! The Men’s Club will be hosting the second annual Trivia Night in the gym. All proceeds will go to the athletic program to help offset the cost of registration fees for families who have children who play sports at St. Barnabas. Please consider joining us for a great night of fun and fellowship. Team will consist of a maximum 8 players. When purchasing a ticket, you can sign-up as a full team, a partial team, or as an individual. Due to limited space and tables, we will more than likely need to fill out partial teams with individual sign-ups. $25 per person pre-event or $30 at the doorLike last year, we will be doing a pitch-in event: Last name A-M: Appetizers; Last name N-Z: Dessert. Beer and soft drinks provided. 7-11 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.). Cash prize for 1st place , 2nd place will get their entry fee returned. RONCALLI INVITES ALUMNI AND FRIENDS TO HOMECOMING
Mark it on your calendar! Roncalli High School’s Homecoming is Friday, September 25, 2015 at 7 p.m. against Brebeuf Jesuit High School. The Roncalli Alumni Association is sponsoring a pre-game tent party “On the Circle” beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the Chartrand High School and Sacred Heart High School “Classes of 1966” celebrating 50 years since their graduation. Football players and cheerleaders from the “Class of ‘91” will also be honored at this event.
Come and help celebrate a Roncalli victory at the post-game tent party at McQ’s Pub & Eatery immediately following the game with special musical guest Zanadoo!
All Alumni are invited to the pre-game tent party at McQ’s Pub and Eatery beginning at 5:00 p.m.

RONCALLI CIRCLE OF FAITH DINNER Please consider joining us for Roncalli's Circle of Faith Fund Dinner on Thursday, September 24th. The event, which serves as the kick-off for the 2015-2016 Circle of Faith Fund Campaign, will be held in the Roncalli Family Room (Gymnasium) with hors d'oeuvres beginning at 6 pm.
