CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS COLLECTIONVSAD ACC. 1989-455) /9'C s<.2) /-/TYFinding Aid No. 263

The collection of CNR consists of ca. 15000 glass plate negativesand nitrate negatives dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. Manynitrate negatives were destroyed due to their deteriorated state. The National Archives of Canada made a list of all numbersdestroyed and copied since we acquired the collection. Twodifferent accessions (1990-562 and 1993-164) were integreted underthe main accession 1989-455.

CP Series: Volume 1

This volume contains a numerical index for all the CP Series whichcorresponds to the glass plate negatives preserved in thecollection. There are some nitrate negatives in the CP Series. Thedescription beside each negative corresponds the National Archivesholdings. These glass plates in the NA are between CP-5073 to CP-7104. The National Archives has not yet received the previousnumbers. They are available at the CN Headquarters in Montreal. Forfurther information, please check with CN research officer Mrs.Connie Romanie in Montreal.

In some instances, the letter C will appear on some CN envelopes, that means that CN Montreal headquarters copied them while theywere servicing the collection and CN retained these copy negatives. Each glass plate negative preserved by the National Archives isindicated in the finding aid.

Numerical Series: volumes 2 and 3

The numerical series starts at the number 15003 and ends to thenumber 46193. Please take note that the numbers preceeding 15003and those after 46193 have not yet been transferred to the NationalArchives of Canada. Researchers who wished to consult these numbersmust contact the researcher officer, Mrs. Connie Romanie, at the CNin Montreal.

Volumes 2 and 3 of the finding aid give a full description for eachnumber listed. Beside each number available in the collection andkept in the National Archives, the researcher will see either theletter 'N" for Nitrate, the word 'Glass" for Glass negative or theletter "P" for Print, and sometimes "S" for Safety negatives. Ifthese different letters or symbols are absent it means that theNational Archives does not have this negative in the collection. The researcher must double check with CN Montreal, a copy of thisnegative could have been made in the past for preservationpurposes.

Sometimes, the letter "D" for destruction appears beside the

caption, it means that this negative has been destroyed by theNational Archives of Canada. The negatives were destroyed if theywere shattered glass negatives or if they were deteriorated nitratenegatives. The researcher mustconsult the destruction and copiedlist of negatives filed in the accession file (1989-455) of thecollection. Many of these negatives were copied when physicalcondition permitted to do so.

Geographical and sub -i ect headings indexes

CN compiled a subject index done by provinces and then by subjects. This index, while usefull, is probably incomplete. Before orderingany of the negative numbers listed, the researcher must alwayscheck if these negative numbers are held in the CN collection atthe National Archives of Canada. Please note that all the negativenumbers preceded by "X" are stored in Montreal. They are availableat CN héadquarters in Montreal. Eventually these numbers will betransferred to the National Archives.

COLLECTION DU CANADIEN NATIONAL

O ACC. 1989-455) /-S,Z /993-/K4"Instrument de recherche I\To. 263

Page 6: S Ydata2.archives.ca/pdf/pdf002/FA-263_162199_vol_2_PEI.pdf · different accessions (1990-562 and 1993-164) were integreted under the main accession 1989-455. CP Series: Volume 1
