    DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Eternal Father, we lift up to You these and all the priests of the world. Sanctify them. Heal and guide them. Mold them into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus, the Eternal High Priest. May their lives be pleasing to You in Jesus ’ name we pray. Amen

Billy Portie Sidonia Primeaux Irene P. Simon Aimee Sonnier MariAnne Vondenstein 0 Think, O God, of our friends who are ill, whom we now commend to Your compassionate regard. Comfort them upon their sickbed and ease their suffering. We beg for deliverance, and submit that no healing is too hard for the Lord, if it be His will. We therefore pray that You bless our friends with Your loving care, renew their strength, and heal what ails them in Your loving name.

Like many other priests, I spend a lot of time preaching the good news (gospel). However, sometimes, this message

is overly simplified to something like, “Jesus loves me.” Jesus does love us, and this is the good news, but there is

more than this. We have taken an overly simplistic view of salvation, especially if we live as if we can do anything

we want because “Jesus has to love me anyway.” We would never say, “I can steal my friend's inheritance, his

goods, his job, and even his spouse. It is ok. He has to love me anyway.” Such a statement would be absurd, yet

this is how we sometimes treat God. The Good news is not wholly good, nor complete if we do not acknowledge the

    possibility of Hell.

Christian preaching is often criticized for preaching about Hell. The supposition is that if there is a hell, then God is

not all good. The converse is true. God would not be good if there were no hell. Hell is not God’s desire for us. Hell

comes through our (and the devils’s) insistence on being separate from God. Death and Hell are necessary for God

to be merciful because, without them, there would be no end to evil. Can you imagine if wicked men who bring great

evils upon the earth went on living with no end? Do you think they would fail to bring even more evil on the earth? It

is also merciful of God that he allows Hell to exist because if you would remove a soul from Hell (or a demon) and

placed them in heaven, they would be in greater torment in Heaven than in Hell because they cannot stand the

    presence of God.

Hell is real. People go there despite what some modern and fluffy catechism lessons have taught us. It has been my

experience that many funerals are quasi-canonizations of people who have died. This is completely opposite to the

tradition of the church. The church used to (and still can) sing the Dies Irae at funerals. It is hymn about the frightful-

ness of the day of judgment, not just the judgment of the deceased. In my opinion that this hymn is less about how

terrible God is and more about our need for grace in salvation. It is sung at funerals to remind us to pray for the de-

ceased and to pray for our souls too. God does not will the death of sinners or their damnation (see Ezekiel

33:11). It is a great disservice to those who have died not to pray for their eternal salvation. The practice of a priest

wearing black for a funeral is to observe our grief and the need to pray for souls. I have found that merely recalling

someone's life is not enough to satisfy the soul. The soul is only satisfied with eternal life with our loved ones, and

that can only be obtained through faith in God.

One of the three secrets of Fatima, which Our Lady gave to three children of Fatima was a vision of Hell. This was

before the great destruction of faith that has defined the last century, but it was already beginning. Heaven thought

that it was essential to emphasize that Hell exists and some souls are there. Mary revealed Hell to the children in a

vision. They were very frightened by the sight of it. At the end off the vision, Mary was sad and implored them to

prayer and sacrifice to save souls from Hell. The children did this to an extraordinary degree for the rest of their

lives. The only way to salvation is through the cross. God gives us every means to assure our salvation. He also

gives us the means to assist others in their salvation. What more can God do except to force us where we do not

    want to go.

It is said that Hell is separation from God. This is an apt definition because it is also the complete and total absence

of love. It is total self-absorption. That is true. It should go without saying that if we only live our lives for ourselves

and never give thought to God or others, we put our souls in jeopardy of going to Hell.

The solutions for saving ourselves and others from Hell are many. To the children of Fatima, Mary emphasizes de-

votion to her heart (the heart of the one closest of all to Jesus, who understands the heart of Jesus) and offering

sacrifices for souls. We see in her words the need for mediation (someone to teach me about Jesus) and the need

for suffering. We are saved by faith in Jesus’ passion for us. Some people refuse Jesus. Other souls are invited to

suffer in their place willingly. Jesus invites us to do for others what he himself does. God knows our hearts perfect-

ly, and he knows the many traps we face. Jesus sends us guardian angels who teach and form our conscience and

keep us from many dangers. He gives us the souls in purgatory and in heaven who pray for us, who intercede with

God on our behalf. God also gives us many graces and the Sacraments. The Eucharist above all things sanctifies

our soul when we receive Jesus worthily.
