In her President’s Message in the last FICS News Dr Sheila Wilson encouraged greater participation of women in sports chiropractic leadership and practice. To support this, and to recognize the great contributions already being made by many women, the FICS News will publish the bios of ten top women sports chiropractors in issues through to the end of next year – from those chosen by you.

Please send in inspiring examples of women who are achiev-ing much in sports chiropractic.

Send in the name, a bio of 150-200 words, and a good qual-ity photo to me, Richard Gakner ([email protected]) and copied to FICS Executive Secretary Christina Da-vis ([email protected]) by November 30.

The next 5 issues will publish and recognize two of those you identify as top women sports chiropractors. The goal is that one will be a more senior, well-established sports chiro-practor, the other a younger graduate or even student leader demonstrating high achievement and promise.

Let me start the process by presenting two nominees of my own.

Robin Hunter DCDr. Robin Hunter (Logan College , 1986) currently practices at Ohio State University where she is the senior sports chiropractor for OSU Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a clinical as-sistant professor at the OSU College of Medicine.

• A keynote presentation on the World Games movement and the expanding role of the sports chiropractors from IWGA Past-President Ron Froehlich

• The best new sports chiropractic research

• Reports on all aspects of FICS’ work – including, for example, the growing number of FICS’ contracts with international sports federations for FICS teams for world chamipionships.

See more in this FICS News and at the newly enhanced FICS website www.fics-sport.org.

Thank you for your continued support for FICS and the growth of sports chiropractic. Have you ever been to Greece? Have you ever been to a FICS Assembly and Symposium and experienced the learning, friendships, energy and fun these meetings produce? Why not make plans now to join us in Athens next May?

This and recent issues of the FICS News reflect an evolutionary trend within the field of sports chiropractic that is similar to trends in industry and commerce – sports chiropractic is un-dergoing globalization. This makes the

role of FICS more important than ever.

The annual ACA Sports Council Symposium, being held in Portland October 3-5, has been advertised internationally and has an educational component through which more Ameri-can sports chiropractors will gain their ICSSP qualification to work in international events. See the article on the American-based TIPS program (Towards Injury Prevention in Sports) from the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP.org), originally designed to have chiropractors in the USA become spokespersons on safety issues in athletic activities, and now to become a model in other countries.

Through FICS the Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sci-ences in Canada has advertised for sports chiropractors from

other countries for its team for the August 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. The Brazilian Sports Chiropractic Council is doing the same thing for the Rio Olympics in August 2016.

Also in this issue see further information on the FICS Foun-dation, being formed to have international impact in funding education, research, and voluntary service at major games events. I want to make special mention also of Dr Dale Rich-ardson’s eulogy for Dr Andrea Bisaz, who played such an important role in bringing access to chiropractic care to pro-fessional tennis players worldwide.

In the last issue FICS President Dr Sheila Wilson called for more participation and representation of women in sports chiropractic.

To encourage this, but also to acknowledge the significant contribution of many of our female colleagues already, I am now making a call for readers to submit the names, photos, and short bios of female colleagues young and old who have made major contributions to sports chiropractic. See my no-tice on that – and send me your entries.

experienced, international sports chiropractors apply because Brazil has relatively few such doctors and we need to ensure the best possible team as a follow up to the successful provi-sion of chiropractic services at the London Games in 2012.

Please consider applying now. See the notice under Brazil in this FICS News for the link and important information on how to apply. Congratulations to Dr Marcelo Botelho of Bra-zil and Dr Tom Greenway of the UK who are playing lead-ing roles in negotiating the terms of provision of chiropractic services.

Finally, the program for next year’s FICS Assembly and Symposium in Athens, Greece on Wednesday May 13, 2015 is now largely established. You will not want to miss this program and the following WFC/ECU Congress May 14-16. Also, Athens is another of the world’s most exciting cities. The program includes:

• A lecture and workshop on the management of shoul-der instability and dislocations by the internationally ac-claimed Dr Ed Feinberg of Palmer West

• A lecture and workshop on managing disabled athletes by Dr David Parish of Logan University who has served with the USOC Paralympic Team

Robin has extensive post-doctoral training in sports chiro-practic, including a sports medicine fellowship at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. She was se-lected to be a member of the USOC medical team at the 2001 University World Games in Beijing, China and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

She has served as the company sports chiropractor for Bal-letMet Columbus since 1986 and has been a part of the OSU Sports Medicine Program for the Performing Arts since its inception in 2005. In 2007, she completed training in dance medicine at the NYU Harkness Center for Dance Injuries. She is on faculty at the OSU Department of Dance.

Robin, who is also board certified in clinical acupuncture, is on the post-graduate faculties of Logan College of Chiro-practic and New York Chiropractic College, and she lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of sports chiro-practic and dance wellness topics.

She served on the Executive Committee for the American Chiropractic Association Council of Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness from 1986-1996, serving as president from 1995-1996. In recognition of her outstanding achievements she was last year admitted as a member of the ACA Sports Council Hall of Fame.

Kelley HumphriesKelley, who is set to graduate from Texas Chiropractic College in Houston this year, was winner of a FICS student scholarship last year for outstanding contributions to sports performance and sports chiropractic leadership, voluntary service and research.

Kelley’s sport is basketball in which she has been prominent as both a player and volunteer. Before chi-ropractic college she was the recipient of a full athletic academ-ic scholarship from Texas Women’s University where she was team captain of the Women’s Division II Basketball Team from 2004-2007. As a graduate assistant in 2007 she helped develop rehab programs for injured athletes off-season and pre-season.

Currently as a PRN supervisor/paramedic she is one of three lead medical personnel at the AT&T Center for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs. She has recently served a five-week in-ternship at the USOC Training Centre at Colorado Springs.

Academically her staff sponsor for her FICS scholarship ap-plication Dr John Ward described her as “one of the best stu-dents I have ever had in 11 years of teaching.” Concurrent with her chiropractic studies she is completing a Master’s de-gree in fitness and human performance from the University of Houston – Clear Lake. She is a co-author of three research projects recently published or in press, most recently Lower Cervical Spine Manipulation Impact on Handgrip Strength and Free-Throw Accuracy of Asymptomatic Recreational Basketball Players: A Pilot Study.

Kelley is an active member of the TCC Student Branch of the ACA Sports Council. In the essay she sent FICS as part of her scholarship application she explained:

“Chiropractic is centered on human performance. The world of sports celebrates an individual’s ability to perfect specif-ic components of human performance. The profession was made to serve athletes. Chiropractors are the only health care providers capable of truly understanding the athlete’s body and the demands placed on it.”There it is - outstanding leadership from two women. I look forward to receiving your nominees.

TribuTes To Dr AnDreA bisAz

Tributes from Dr Dale Richardson and Dr Dina Tzonis to an exceptional sports chiropractor and their close friend and colleague on his recent passing – Dr An-drea Bisaz of Melbourne, Australia. Ed.

The sports chiropractic world, the chiropractic profession and so many people from all walks of life and from throughout the world lost a wonderful human being in Dr Andrea Bisaz on Sunday 20th July 2014.

Andrea, a private man with exceptional healing qualities, has left us way too early. I have never met any other healer with so much empathy and compassion for his or her patients. He had a unique ability to take away both their physical and emotional pain just by his presence and his way. A beautiful man and a beautiful spirit.

I met Andrea in the early 1990s and he was already forging a career in sports chiropractic. At the time and via his AK roots, Andrea began working with Ivan Lendl, courtesy of a referral from Dr Donald McDowall, an AK expert and sports chiropractor from the Australian Capital Territory. It was not long before Ivan was the World #1 tennis player and Andrea starting working with many more tennis professionals.

Andrea and I envisioned and established the Melbourne Sports Clinic in late 1994 moving into our beautifully reno-vated building at 466 Punt Road South Yarra. At this stage Andrea was working with Pat Rafter and gained the Tennis Australia official appointment of Australian Davis Cup sports chiropractor.

Andrea would fly with the team to all the Davis Cup events and also attended the Australian Open as part of the Tennis Australia sports medicine team. Time away from the clinic also included working with Pat Rafter at US Opens and other major tournaments.

After Pat retired he was then hired by Leyton Hewitt and suc-cess was immediate, with Leyton winning his first of two ten-nis majors. It was not just tennis professionals that sought out Andrea’s skills of sports performance but many athletes from many sports – for example Donovan Bailey, 100m world-record holder and Olympic champion in 1996. The list was extensive!

When I departed the Melbourne Sports Clinic in 2000, Dr Dina Tsonis took over the partnership with Andrea and was the perfect partner and foil for him. Andrea was never moti-vated by money and as long as he could pay his rent, eat well, buy beautiful clothes and have money for a good time he was happy. Dina provided the business back up and structure so he could simply enjoy his life. They were a great team and the Melbourne Sports Clinic flourished and grew for a further 14 years under their guidance till Andrea’s passing.

Andrea was a godfather to Pesche Bechter, Olivia Porta and our son Brendan Richardson and I believe a few more in Switzerland. Andrea was an instructor for and an active member of the Melbourne Systema Russian Martial Arts.

Andrea was my best man, my business partner, the godfather to my son Brendan and a friend. I wish that I could have been more for him.

Dr Dale Richardson, Melbourne, Australia

RIP Dr Andrea Bisaz,

He was my mentor, coach and chiropractic encyclopedia for anything I needed. He was taken far too early and too abrupt-ly from us.

In the 18 years that I spent with him, as a student and then business partner, he taught me techniques that no one else could. His adjusting skills were like no other. He could prac-tically manually adjust a horse and make it seem like it was no big deal.

He was one of the first Australian chiropractors to work with our Australian Olympic tennis team and he sure made me proud.

His passion for ongoing learning was like no other. He was like a sponge wanting to absorb every new technique and treatment protocol. He made sure he put every treatment re-gime to the test and was keen on extra research to back up his theories.

He advised patients and athletes from every angle; his knowl-edge was vast and unbelievable. He covered every aspect with every patient, ranging from nutritional, physiological, biomechanical and even psychological advice.

The chiropractic profession has lost a true pioneer in sports chiropractic. He has left a void in our clinic that will never be filled.

I will always and forever love you and I promise that I will ensure your legacy continues.

Even in your death you taught me a lesson: You taught me to do one thing at a time and to live every day like it is my last.

New FICS Executive Officers

On behalf of all FICS members, con-gratulations to the following FICS Executive Officers newly elected for a four-year term from October:

For bios go to www.fics-sport.org. This gives FICS a bal-anced, experienced and strong leadership team from five world regions. Congratulations to these leaders once more.

The FICS Executive Council (ExCo) has 12 members, 9 regional representatives elected by 7 world regions, and 3 members-at-large elected by the FICS membership in As-sembly. The ExCo serves a four-year term. Next ExCo elec-tions are in 2016. Mid-way through the ExCo’s term of of-fice it elects executive officers. This provides continuity, and ensures that everyone elected to an executive position has already had ExCo experience.

Alex Steinbrenner Reports In

Talking of the Executive, it was good to hear from former First Vice-President Dr Alex Steinbrenner of Germany in Au-gust. He had just returned from Training Camp with Wolfs-burg, the Bundesliga professional football team for which he is team chiropractor.

He reported that the VfL Wolfsburg was the German Bun-desliga team with the second most national team players

participating in the World Cup in Brazil, sending 7 players from 5 countries. Only the FC Bayern Munich did send more. Here is Alex with two of them.

Applications Open for Rio Summer Olympics

During July-August Dr Marcelo Brazil (Brazil) and Dr Tom Greenway (UK) were deeply involved in negotiations for the provision of chiropractic services within the host medical services for RIO 2016, the Summer Olympics and Paralym-pics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August 2016.

Tom was, you will remember, Lead Chiropractor for the London Olympics where chiropractic, osteopathy and physi-otherapy were combined so well that the Rio Local Organ-izing Committee is using the London Olympics as a model.

The application process for Brazilian and international sports chiropractors to serve at Rio 2016 is now open. See details in the notice from Dr Botelho under Brazil on page 15

FICS Foundation – Launch Event PostponedIn her President’s Message in March Dr Sheila Wilson an-nounced the plan to form a new FICS Foundation to encour-age philanthropic donations to support sport chiropractic education, research and volunteer services at national and international games.

There was to be a major launch event in March 2015 at Fen-way Park in Boston. To allow adequate preparation time that event is now being postponed to either November 2015 or March 2016.

In the meantime much good work is being done by the Board of Directors. A fundraising strategic plan and case statements for potential donors and for those being asked to sit on the Board of Advisors have been approved. A Board of Advi-sors is to be established during the months ahead. Here is the FICS Foundation’s vision statement:

The vision of the Foundation is that it will have such a sub-stantial impact on the development of the specialty of sports chiropractic, through the funding and support of education, research and voluntary service at major games, that within 10 years all athletes performing at major national and inter-national events will have access to and use sports chiroprac-tic care as an integral part of the sports medicine services of-fered at the event, thereby improving athletes’ choice of care and global sports performance.

SCU Offers Olympian Scholarships – Signs Agreement with ATLANTA 1996 and FICSSouthern California University Health Sciences (SCU) has recently signed an agreement with the ATLANTA 1996 and FICS to provide two full academic scholarships ($160,000 each) to two international Olympians selected by the

ATLANTA 1996 to pursue studies leading to a doctorate in chiropractic (DC) medicine.

In return the Olympians will contribute an equal amount or more to their academic scholarship to the ATLANTA 1996 PARSE Scholarship DC Fund managed by the ATLANTA 1996 and FICS, when graduated and in practice. This is to support future athletes who will also pursue a DC degree.

SCU is the first of several institutions that will provide an additional 8 academic scholarships for the 2014-2018 cycle to more international Olympians to be selected by the AT-LANTA 1996.

A New Commission Announced - MembershipAt the FICS ExCo Meeting in Dublin in May a Membership Commission was approved. FICS President Dr Sheila Wilson recommended Dr Martin Isaks-son of Sweden to chair the new com-mission and he was unanimously ap-proved. Thank you Martin for taking on this very important role.

The goals of the Membership Commis-sion are to increase the number of NCSC members and numbers in all other mem-

bership categories, including individual membership where there is no NCSC in the country, and student and associate membership. In addition the Membership Commission is es-tablishing a The Value of Being a FICS Member document.

The current members of the Commission, who we thank for their willingness to serve, are:

Martin Isaakson--Chair, SwedenNathan Akmens – AustraliaEd Feinberg – USAMateusz Nowacki - Poland

YOUR HELP PLEASE – Do you know a potential Advisor? The Foundation’s Board of Advisors will be comprised of up to 20 internationally prominent athletes and other individuals who have benefited from chiro-practic care and are willing to lend their names to the Foundation and its above vision.

They only have two obligations – to authorize use of their name, photo and short bio as a member of the Board of Advisors to the Foundation; and to be willing to appear at one fundraising event in the future at a time and place convenient to and approved by them.

Do you have a current or former patient who is suit-able and likely willing to be an Advisor? If so, please send the name to me at the FICS Foundation via Christi-na Davis at [email protected], including your email and telephone contact information. The FICS Founda-tion will then reply with documentation you can give to your patient when making a formal request.

Multi Radiance Medical Announces a Ground-Breaking Achievement in Translational ResearchMulti Radiance Medical (MRM), manufacturer and marketer of FDA-cleared lasers for drug-free pain relief, announced on August 19 that its Clinical Research Trial for treating Knee Pain is among the first translational research studies per-formed with Photobiomodulation.

“This study is ground-breaking in the sense that it moves the research in Photobiomodulation from statistically significant to clinically significant,” states Max Kanarsky, President and CEO of Multi Radiance. The study was conducted with the MRM MR4 Super Pulsed Laser in a randomized double-blind placebo controlled environment with the following conclusions:

• Photobiomodulation significantly decreased pain and significantly improved SF-36® physical component summary at post-treatments and follow-up assessments compared to placebo.

• Outcomes were maintained at the 30 day follow up.

• A combination of super pulsed laser, red and infrared LEDs is effective for decreasing pain and improving the quality of life in patients with knee pain.

The Study included 86 patients being treated for all types of knee pain with a standard methodology call the Priority Principle™. The methodology was developed by Douglas S. Johnson, ATC, EES, CLS who was closely involved with the project.

“The article was accepted for publication by Lasers in Medical Science and is now available as an epublication ahead of print,” Johnson said. “We will also be presenting the findings at the upcoming joint meeting of the World Association of Laser Therapy and the North American Association of Laser and Light Therapy held this September in Washington, DC.”

Dr. Ernesto Leal Junior, PhD, PT, the lead researcher on the study and a prominent researcher in the field of Photobiomod-ulation, states, “This study represents a shift in research since we focused on patient-based outcomes. Currently, research in the Photobiomodulation field has generated outcomes that generally are difficult to translate into clinical practice, which creates a gap. Undoubtedly, this study fills the gap and represents real translational research.”

About Multi Radiance MedicalMulti Radiance Medical is a global leader in the development and manufacturing of FDA-cleared lasers for drug-free pain relief. This proprietary technology is considered the safest laser on the market and is utilized to treat over 300 conditions worldwide.

Case History: Young Athlete With Two Bulging DiscsBy Dr. Tim MaggsThe first question that is usually asked when a patient has a disc injury is, “Is it surgical or not?” That’s the wrong question. The

first question that should be asked is, “Why does the patient have a disc injury?” In this case, the patient is a 13-year-old girl who participates in crew.

Maggs’ LawWhen the loading of a tissue exceeds the capacity of that tis-sue, compensatory physiological changes occur.

HistoryThis young girl presented to my office with a history of back pain for two years. She is now 15 years old and has been out of sports for two years since being diagnosed with 2 bulging discs in her low back, as seen on MRI. She brought copies of her A-P (fig. 1) and Lateral (fig. 2) lumbar films; however, they were cropped and taken in the laying down position. This removed all biomechanical information that would help to explain why she has two disc injuries.

This young athlete had been to the orthopod on three occa-sions during the prior two years. On the first two occasions, she was told to take two months off while going through a series of physical therapy, and then go back to her activity. On both occasions, the pain came right back. After waiting six months with no activity, she went back to the orthopod, who then recommended she stop exercise all together, that she was not cut out for sports or activity.

Structural Fingerprint® ExamIn order to answer the question “why,” we had to see what imbalances were visible on x-rays taken in the standing po-sition. The A-P lumbar (fig. 3) and Lateral lumbar (fig. 4) provided much more information when taken in the stand-ing position. We also performed a digital foot scan (fig. 5) as well as the remainder of the exam, consisting of Q angle, leg length, joint mobility, and trigger point testing.

Report of FindingsOn the Lateral lumbar film (fig. 3), we can see that Fergu-son’s gravity line is going through the posterior discs in the

low back, while the line should be bisecting the anterior 1/3 of the sacral base. The A-P lumbar (fig. 4) clearly shows a se-vere imbalance between the height of the right and left pelvis, the center of gravity line and the symmetry of the obturator foramen. These imbalances, combined with a posterior Fer-guson’s gravity line show us “WHY” this young girl has disc injuries at such a young age.

Now, when we combine the digital foot scan information (fig. 5), we see there are significant imbalances in the feet, which are contributing greatly to the imbalances in the pelvis. The lateral arches have fallen on both feet, and the heels do not have the normal weight distribution, suggesting further there are abnormal loadings throughout her structure.

We informed the patient that custom orthotics were manda-tory if we were ever going to get the discs in her low back

to heal. To show the importance of custom orthotics, we had the patient insert them in her shoes when they arrived, and we re-took the A-P lumbar x-ray (fig. 6). The re-x-ray, with the orthotics in her shoes, showed a 50% biomechani-cal improvement. This confirmed to the entire family the importance of custom orthotics.

We then told the parents that the typical time frame for an injury of this nature to heal is 4-6 months. The treatment con-sists of 3x’s/week, including chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, kinesiotaping and spinal decompression. There is a re-exam every 30 days to ensure we’re making progress.

Once the patient has reduced pain, core exercises and flex-ibility exercises, using The Stick, are added. We then add ac-tivities such as walking, elliptical, exercise bike, etc. As the

patient is building tolerance to these exercises and the discs are healing, we then add strengthening exercises and sport-like activities.

This patient returned to her sport approximately five months after treatment started, and has continued for the past two years with no further flare-ups. She continued her mainte-nance care, which varied in frequency from once a week to once per month. In the end, it was a highly successful case.

Brazil

Dear Fellow Chiropractors,

The call for all volunteers for the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics (RIO 2016) in Brazil in August 2016, including chiropractors to provide services in the host medical ser-vices team in the polyclinics, is now open online at www.rio2016.org/volunteer. You have until November 15 to apply.

It has been my privilege to lead negotiations for chiropractic services in the polyclinics, greatly assisted by Dr Tom Green-way, Lead Chiropractor for the host team of chiropractors for the London Olympics and others from FICS.

Chiropractic services will be provided on a similar basis to the London Olympics, which is as part of the Physical Ther-apy Services, which will include physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathy. That is because of the great success of this model in London as reported by athletes, coaches, adminis-trators and all who served in the host services team.

Brazilian and international chiropractors are invited to apply. There is no requirement to speak Portuguese. Volunteers will receive meals, transport in Rio de Janeiro, and uniforms but not accommodation.

The exact number of chiropractors has not yet been decided. This is because of an issue concerning some Brazilian PTs who claim to be qualified to provide chiropractic services – an issue we are confident of resolving in the near future. (For those interested, see background on this long-standing issue in Brazil under Projects/Support Brazil at the World Federa-tion of Chiropractic’s website www.wfc.org).

ArounD The WorlD in sporTs ChiroprACTiC

To assist in resolving this issue it is very important to have a good number of strong applications from well-qualified Bra-zilian and international sports chiropractors. This will help the local organizers understand the necessary educational qualifications, games event experience and professional pro-file to deliver chiropractic services.

So, please consider applying now. Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and this will be an unforgettable experience. Professionally, after the successful inclusion of chiropractic services in the host medical services at the Van-couver (2010) and London (2012) Games, this will continue to establish chiropractic as a necessary part of the health ser-vices available to athletes. Please note:

• When asked “professional experience/ what’s your pro-fession or academic area of study” in the application form (stage 3), you should select “other”.

• When asked “health professionals/ degree” (stage 4) you should select other, and for “specialty” select chiropractic.

• IMPORTANT – when asked for “Rio 2016 partner code” (stage 4) you should type/enter MED10104.

• Do not be upset or overreact to the inappropriate way that the online form currently confuses/mixes the iden-tities of chiropractic and has the name ‘chiropractics’. This is the issue we are resolving.

• Please decide to apply now. Encourage sports chiroprac-tic colleagues to join you. As mentioned, deadline is No-vember 15.

• IMPORTANT – when you have filed your applica-tion please send an email to FICS Executive Secretary Christina Davis at [email protected] confirming that you have applied and the date of your application. This means that FICS and the profession will have a record of the number of applications filed.

Thank you for your support – I hope to see you in Rio.

Yours sincerely

Marcelo Botelho DC, MD, ICCSPFICS Latin America Representative and First Vice-President

Chiropractors who are interested in vol-unteering are required to register on-line at this link: https:/volunteer.toron-to2015.org/Portal/index.cfm/volunteer/login

You can also email [email protected] to receive more information about medical team volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers to serve as a chiropractor for Host Medical Ser-vices are required to hold current chiropractic professional registration where they practice. Chiropractors not registered in the Province of Ontario will be required to secure a tempo-rary registration in Ontario.

Brazil World CupIn 2010 I had the pleasure of receiving Carlos Alberto Torres, former captain of the Brazilian Football Team in 1970 when it won the World Cup, as a patient. He became a good friend of chiropractic. It was him who this year introduced me to the Medical Director for the Brazilian Team Dr Runco.

In the days before the first World Cup game Dr Runco asked me if I would provide chiropractic care for the players. They had requested a chiropractor, because the great majority of them already knew about the benefits of chiropractic. This was because they had been regularly adjusted when playing for their teams in other countries.

None of the players had injuries. All our chiropractic treat-ment sessions were intended to improve function and perfor-mance, and to prevent injury. Accompanying me during my work were a medical doctor and physiotherapist and there was a valuable exchange of information. I was very well re-ceived by the players, and during the month of the World Cup returned to work with them two times.

It was an exciting experience, not only for me as a profes-sional but also for the recognition of our profession of chiro-practic in Brazil. This is because the Brazilian medical team and others learned about chiropractic, our high level of edu-cation in Brazil and the register of the Brazilian Chiroprac-tors’ Association.

South AfricaSports Chiropractic in Kwa-Zulu NatalOn the sports front the calendar for 2014 has been a busy and successful one for

the faculty, students and alumni of the Department of Chi-ropractic, Durban University of Technology (DUT) in our province of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Through to September we have provided services at 46 com-munity events, many of these of inter-provincial or national importance. Large events where many patients were seen by sports chiropractors and students include the PMB Mara-thon, the Rugby Rush, the National Swimming Champion-ships and Commonwealth Trials and inter-provincial hockey tournaments for men, girls and boys. The main international event was the Mr. Price Pro annual professional surfing tour-nament in May.

Total patients seen by students to the end of August were 5,492, but additional exposures for students to more acute injury profiles were seen at various rugby clubs we serve. Thanks are extended to many chiropractors but also many physiotherapists, medical doctors and other health profes-sionals with whom we have worked. All have assisted in ex-tending our multidisciplinary networks that provide care for the sportsmen and sportswomen of the greater KZN region.

SwitzerlandThe Swiss Chiropractic Sports Council (SCSC) has a new president, Dr Jean-Pierre Cordey. He has replaced Dr. Ro-land Noirat, founding member of the SCSC in 1996 and our first and only pres-ident up till now. We thank him for his leadership during 18 years of presidency.

During the summer the SCSC was present at the Vidy Beach Volley Tournament, where we were sole pro-viders of medical coverage, and at Athletissima, an annual ath-letics meeting the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne, Switzerland. Previously one of the five IAAF Super Grand Prix events, it is now part of the IAAF Diamond League. It is rated as the 6th largest track and field event in the world. The SCSC will participate at the Lausanne Marathon at end of October.

The SCSC had a booth in Biel/Bienne, September 18 - 20, at the CE program of ChiroSuisse, our national professional as-sociation. We felt a welcomed interest in sports chiropractic and the SCSC among some of our younger colleagues. Due to the reception and success at this year’s ChiroSuisse confer-ence, the SCSC will again be present at next year’s confer-ence in Crans-Montana.

A very successful Learn&Ski seminar was held in Engelberg last January featuring our friend, Dr Lindsay Rowe from Australia. Next January it will be the turn of Dr. Brian Nook to share his knowledge with us at our Learn&Ski seminar in Saas Almagell.

“TIPS is a wonderful organization providing healthcare education to young athletes, coaches and parents across the nation. I have spoken twice to a large audience on behalf of TIPS via the American Youth Soccer Organization with great suc-cess. The topics have included hy-dration protocols, nutrition and gen-

eral knowledge on sports injuries. Coaches and directors have been especially appreciative of the information being delivered to the young athlete population which helps them re-enforce safety and health on the field.” Dr Mindy Mar
