2018 Global Gender Balance Scorecard – Focus on Business Schools

Over a third of the top 101 business schools worldwide have achieved a gender-balanced student intake, which we define as having a maximum 60% of either gender. Several others are close to this goal. Schools need congratulating for this turnaround, as only a few years ago it seemed unattainable. This represents a real step change since 2015.

The next frontier will be to balance faculty to create more balanced business school cultures, curriculums and teaching case studies. For the moment, the numbers are progressing slightly, but from a very low base. Particular congratulations, therefore, to Edinburgh, EDHEC, Leeds and San Diego schools for achieving balance in both students and faculty.

Like companies, balancing the base without balancing leadership and faculty means women are still being asked to adapt to systems designed by men. Representation without inclusion is not tapping into the benefits that balance brings.

But for now, let’s applaud the progress made. It will create a much more balanced MBA talent pool for business.
