behind the linesW elcome to the 2013 holiday season! With Thanksgiving
only a few days away, Christmas is just around the corner. For me, this is a special year. My oldest son and his family have returned home — and not just for the holidays. They’re moving back for good following 10 years of military service.
We are already making plans and looking forward to taking my three-year-old grandson, Wyatt, to many local events — area Christmas parades, Santa at the City Mall and Winter Wonder-land, among others. The Arkansas River Valley is lucky to be home to many community events that cost little to nothing and can be enjoyed by children of all ages. Be sure to check out the communi-ty calendar of upcoming events in this issue.
Speaking of events, it’s time for our annual holiday Gift Guide. Inside, you will find all kinds of gift ideas. This special edition of RVL Magazine highlights a range of options for shopping local this season, from patronizing area artists to stopping by one of our locally owned small businesses.
As in previous years, The Courier and RVL Magazine are partner-ing to promote the shop local movement by sponsoring our annual $250 shopping spree. We hope to inspire you to support our area
businesses while at the same time offering you an opportunity to register to win five $50 gift certificates from participating merchants advertising in this section. See the inside back cover for details.
Also in this issue are stories about how one area organization is making a difference one child at a time, features highlighting hol-iday decor ideas you can replicate in your own home, recipes and more. And I’d be remiss not to mention our cover story, about a biannual production of holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” that will take the stage at The Center for the Arts for the first time this year.
As we continue to grow, RVL would like to thank our dedicated readers and loyal advertisers for their support. We always enjoy hearing from you. Have an upcoming event, or want to share photos or recipes? We would love to hear from you! Please contact me by emailing [email protected].
Until then, happy shopping, and happy holi-days from all of us at RVL.

A holiday tradition is preparing to come alive in Russellville.Every other year, the Dance Foundation hosts a production
of “The Nutcracker,” and this year’s event promises to be one of the best yet. This will be the first year the performance will be at The Center for the Arts, which will provide an exciting new venue for the event.
In addition, Cory Stearns will return this year to again take on the role of The Prince. Stearns previously performed the role for the Dance Foundation in 2007. Since that time, Stearns has earned a place as a principal dancer at the American Ballet The-atre in New York.
“We are over the moon that he would think about coming back to Russellville,” director Ashley Miller Davis said.
Stearns has asked Ashley Ellis of the Boston Ballet to dance alongside him as the Sugar Plum Fairy.
While Davis is excited about the dancers and the new venue, perhaps one of the most special aspects of this year’s perfor-mance is the group of six high school seniors who will dance in their last performance of “The Nutcracker” this year before graduating.
“That’s a really special group of kids,” Davis said. “Most of them I’ve been working with since they were in the 3- and 4-year-old class.”
The young women, all seniors at Russellville High School, are Hannah Grace Knight, Mallory Leavell, Grace Hendren, Hanna Jane Colvin, Raigan Purtle and Ashton Purtle.
“I’m just especially close to this group of girls, and I hate to see them go,” Davis said, but added they have helped to inspire and motivate the younger girls.

The cast members auditioned in April, and have been rehearsing since the first week in June.
“It’s a big time commitment,” Davis said. Davis invites the community to come out
and enjoy the “beautiful, classic timeless mu-sic” of “The Nutcracker” and enjoy the dancing of not only Stearns and the group of senior girls, but the entire Nutcracker cast.
This year’s Nutcracker performances will take place Dec. 13-15. Tickets can be obtained at any Russellville Arvest Bank location or by calling 968-6888.

In a world where people tend to hop from one job to an-other, Linda Jones has been proud to dedicate more than
two decades of service — and counting — to her employer. Jones is a customer service representative at Simmons First
Bank’s main Russellville branch on North Arkansas Avenue. She operates the switchboard and acts as receptionist.
At the bank since 1991, Jones has seen a lot of changes, from expansion of the building to new technologies.
Throughout that time, though, Jones has also developed longstanding relationships with the bank’s customers.
“My customers are my friends, because I’ve known them so long,” she said.
Jones said she will inquire about family members and swap
stories about grandchildren with many of her regulars. While the customers are “without a doubt” Jones’ favorite part
of working at Simmons, her coworkers come in at a close second.“We have some really good coworkers,” she said. “We’re
like a family here.” She said she is grateful for the support she has received
from her Simmons family, which bulwarked her this past year as she faced some medical issues.
“I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said. While the environment is rewarding, Jones also said Sim-
mons is a company she is proud to work at.“I’ve always liked the integrity of Simmons Bank and
what it stands for,” she said.

todd Sweeden owns the Belle Helen Bess, a 110-year-old house on E. Fifth St. in Russellville.
The Classic Greek Revival style house — which boasts 12-foot ceilings, 14 rooms, two long cross halls, five bedrooms and four-and-a-
half bathrooms — was built over two years by Judge Robert Barrett Wilson and completed in 1903. Mules were used to bring in massive quar-ried rock slabs for the foundation and walkway.
When the house was built, it had wall-to-wall carpeting, which was uncommon for
the time. The pine wood floors have since been uncovered and now many hand-wo-ven rugs are used throughout the house.
The estate has massive Ionic wood col-umns and an entrance flanked by copper gas lights.
Santa graces the dining room at Belle Helen Bess, the historic Russellville home of Todd Sweeden.

Open Arms of Russellville is an organization that donates clothes, shoes and other items to families in need.
Its motto is “Making a difference, one child at a time.” Amanda San-born, 28, started the organization after seeing mothers asking for help in Facebook posts.
“I had a network of mom friends and we exchanged items all the time,” Sanborn said. “I was on all the yard sale and swap sites.”
After helping coordinate donors for some of the moms on the site, Sanborn wanted to do more. She started a Facebook page for Open Arms, facebook.com/openarmsar, and the word spread quickly.
In November 2012, she rented a 10-by-10-foot storage unit with three shelves to store clothes and items until a need arose for them.

Sanborn said her friend Katie Rogers, 30, be-came her “right-hand woman,” helping her sort the items.
“We worked out of diaper boxes because they fit on the shelves,” Sanborn said.
Within two months, the unit was so full the ladies could no longer work out of it so they rented a 10-by-20-foot unit, where they stayed for nine months.
“We had enough space to put the girls’ items on one side and the boys’ on the other,” Sanborn said. “We got out of diaper boxes and into hang-ing racks. It was just awesome.”
In October, a donor who wishes to remain anonymous provided Open Arms with a build-ing in Russellville rent-free.
“We had been praying for space and even checked on a building for sale,” Rogers said.
Open Arms hosted two public giveaways in Russellville this year: in August at Garden Valley Apartments and in November at Veterans Park. At each event, the organization gave away hundreds of shoes, countless bags of clothes, toys, bedding, school supplies, diapers and hygiene products.
Sanborn said she couldn’t have started the group without her husband of seven years, Lawrence.
“He’s the muscle,” she said.To donate or receive items from Open Arms,

A rkansas River Valley foodies can spend more time cooking and less time driving now that a local option for gourmet kitchen supplies is available.
Kitchen Essentials owner Becki Bryson said she made the decision to open the store when she realized there was a need in the community.
Bryson said her oldest son is an aspiring chef and for several years she has given him kitchen supplies for gifts. Most of the time, she had to travel to Little Rock to find the items on his wish-list.
She recalled this past Christmas, when she went to four different stores trying to locate a specific item. That is when she and her husband really started thinking about opening a store locally.
“We just started doing research and one thing led to another,” Bryson said. “It all really came together pretty easily, easier than I thought it was going to be.”
The store opened July 20 in Russellville City Mall and since that time, Bryson said the community has been very supportive.

“When I first started college, I wanted to be a secretary,” Ed-wards said. “They didn’t have computers back then and I had a love/hate relationship with typewriters, so I decided to try some-thing else.”
Edwards apprenticed as an embalmer at a funeral home in Dardanelle.“I know people cringe at the thought, but it was a good experience,”
she said. “Making the deceased look pretty so the family has a good last memory of them is important.”
Edwards managed the funeral home next door to the flower shop. Her nickname around the funeral home was “Little General” because she ran a tight ship.
“You know the old saying, ‘late for your own funeral’? Well, not on my watch,” she said.

Love family started talking about selling the flower shop.“I thought, ‘I can still serve the families through flowers,’” she said.
“It’s the happier side of the building.”After buying the business, Edwards got certified as an Arkansas
Master Florist. Her love of flowers and attention to detail are evident throughout
the flower shop.“There’s nothing prettier than fresh flowers,” she said. “They make
people happy. If they’re sick, flowers make them feel better. The
vibrant colors just bring you into a better mood.”Edwards said she wants to dispel a myth that flowers aren’t a good
gift for certain people.“Florists love flowers,” she said. “When it’s their birthday or anni-
versary, send them flowers. You just have to be a little sneaky.”Love’s Flower Shop is located at 205 Quay St. in Dardanelle. It’s

tinsel time againlOcal WRITER REFlEcTS ON ThE hOlIDay SEaSON
I don’t know about most families, but growing up in my house it was my mom who was in charge of most things holiday-related. Whether it was Thanksgiving or Christmas, she was the one who kept everyone on sched-
ule and did the planning. She wrote the menus, shopped for gifts, addressed the Christmas cards, kept
track of which grandparents’ turn it was to spend Christmas Day with and so on.The one tradition that steadily remained my dad’s was decorating the
Christmas tree. For most of my Christmases at my parents’ house, we deco-rated an artificial tree. This was long before the fancier trees that now come pre-lit with easier-to-fluff hinged branches.

columnEach year after Thanksgiving, my dad would bring in the tree
and ornaments from the shed. While Mom organized the orna-ments in the dining room, Dad, my brother and I would assem-ble the tree.
There was a real art to it. First, we sorted the color-coded wire tips of each branch into piles, then my older brother and I would hand Dad the branches to insert into the tree base.
After the branches were all in their respective slots, we would “fluff ” the tree, usually until it passed my mom’s inspection. Then we would choose from the ornaments Mom had unwrapped to decorate the tree.
Even though my brother, my dad and I actually decorated the tree, Mom always “managed” the endeavor from the kitchen. She’d chime in that we needed to move this ornament over there and wasn’t this section a little bare and some other section top heavy and so on.
After the ornaments were placed on the tree came the really fun part. We’d apply the finishing touch … it was time to add the tinsel.
I loved to blow the tinsel on! I’d hold up a few strands and blow and let the tinsel stay wherever it landed, always trying to heed my moth-
er’s tree-decorating advice about the importance of keeping the tree balanced. We wouldn’t want the tree to be tinsel-heavy anywhere.
My dad and brother always joined in the tinsel fun. It was the ab-solute best part and was always accomplished with only one or two suggestions from Mom.
As my brother and I grew older, decorating the tree was still our job. Eventually, it was just my dad and me after my brother got married.
The day after Thanksgiving, I’d always be ready to put up the tree. Mom still gathered the ornaments, only now many of the home-made ornaments had been passed down to me for my own tree, and Dad and I would decorate the tree.
Over the years, it has been Grandpa and my two children who decorate Mamaw and Papaw’s tree. There is no more assembly required; thankfully, the tree has been upgraded. Mamaw still manages the entire production from the dining room, but with fewer comments. I think the idea of the perfect tree has become more about the perfect opportunity for family time than the actual decorated tree itself.
It makes me smile to know the memories made as each ornament is carefully placed will last my children a lifetime.

Create a bright and festive holiday wreath with simple mesh and ribbon.
What you’ll need:• 20 yards of decorative mesh• 2 rolls of 2-inch wide ribbon• 24 inches of wire wreath frame• Christmas ornaments• Wooden monogram letter • Acrylic paint for wooden letter• 1 package of 12-inch pipe cleaners• Decorative holly or small decorations.• String or wire to hang letter
Step 1: Attach tinsel ties to metal wreath; two in each section: one on the outer ring, the other in the center ring.
Step 2: Holding ribbon, pull out approximately 18 inches and fold into a loop. Gather in the middle, and at-tach the middle to the inner most ring using a tinsel tie. Secure center tightly to the inner most ring using your tinsel. Continue this step around the entire centermost ring of the wreath, attaching at each tinsel tie you placed earlier. Do not cut the mesh.
When forming your loops, remember, larger means more volume and smaller means a more compact wreath.
Step 3: Move to outer ring. Repeat the same process as Step 2 by attaching to the tinsel ties on the outer ring. Attach
at the same section where you begin, this ensures no gaps. Step 4: After making the last loop, cut the mesh. Attach loop to the outer tinsel tie you started the out-er circle with.
Fold the mesh underneath itself or trim the excess.
Step 5: Now shape your wreath, sepa-rating all loops and fluff. Wrap ribbon around wreath and secure if necessary. Use ties to attach additional decorations to the wreath.
Step 6: Attach the letter so it is centered in the wreath. Using a longer string may help.

S electing gifts for those hard-to-buy-for people on your list can be a challenge. By giving them something they want but wouldn’t consider putting on their Christmas list, you give
them something different and new this holiday season. One idea? Take a small metal bucket and fill it with some favorite treats. In doing so, you create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
For him, we placed some favorite snacks in the bucket along with a favorite DVD, creating a ready-made movie night. By also adding his favorite dry rub, you gift dinner and a movie. For flair, add a cute coupon good for “one steak dinner cooked to your liking.”
For her, we created a spa day at home by layering in her favorite face masks, lotions, nail polish, bubble bath and body spray. Make sure to include a special coupon to “watch the kids for the night” or good for one “relaxation hour in the tub.”
Need something fun to take to that holiday party at work? Home-made hot chocolate is an easy and inexpensive gift. By creating your own container using a pint-size paint bucket covered with festive scrapbook paper, you can create a simple storage device to contain your creation that will require no wrapping and can be used every holiday season.
This makes a great one-time gift in a smaller jar, but it’s also great as a gift that keeps on giving if you use a jar big enough to hold the whole batch and include a copy of the recipe card! Let your friends keep a steady supply too!

AND MARTINISmammograms
Women in and around the Arkansas River Valley enjoyed a girls-night-out event on Oct. 15 and
17, but instead of dinner and a movie, they were treat-ed to mocktails and mammograms.
In conjunction with National Breast Cancer Aware-ness Month, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center offered mammograms after regular business hours.
Participants enjoyed martini mocktails, pink carna-tions and door prizes.
Best friends, sisters, mothers and daughters were among the many women who enjoyed a little “me” and mammogram time.

i n July, Tech Travel undertook a delightful journey to northern California. The large group of travelers spent
three days in San Francisco. Later, participants traveled to beautiful Yosemite National Park.
The trip also included stops in the wine country of Napa and Sonoma. A tour of several wineries and olive oil presses was quite an experience, travelers reported.
All good things come to an end, though — in this case, in Santa Rosa.
