Building Works goes to Tender
We have been advised by the Department of Education that the
Major Capital upgrade has gone out to tender last week. This
means that it’s ‘all systems go’! The tendering process will take
a few months to complete with a target start date of early
October 2018. You might see numerous visitors to the school
over the next few weeks, looking at the site and preparing
quotes for the project.
Public Speaking
All classes are currently in the process of selecting their best
public speakers to represent their Stage in the upcoming public
speaking finals to be held in Week 10 of this term.
All students are encouraged to prepare a speech and practise
the art of speaking in front of an audience.
Reports
All teachers are currently preparing reports for parents and
carers to indicate how their child/ren are progressing in
Semester 1.
Reports will be sent home in the last week of Term 2.
ICAS TESTS
Spelling - Wednesday 13 June 2018 - Community Room
Writing - Thursday 14 June 2018 - Mrs Lupton’s Room 5/6V
Students who have paid to sit the UNSW ICAS test will need to
be at school by 8:00am this Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14
June 2018. The test will be administered before school to avoid
any interruptions to school routines and learning.
All students who sit the morning tests are untitled to free toast
from the breakfast club!
Entries for this test are closed and no late entries can be
accepted.
Good luck to the students sitting this test!
Upcoming ICAS dates:
English Tuesday 31 July 2018
Mathematics Tuesday 14 August 2018
Enrolments continue to Steadily Climb
Our current enrolment this week stands at 940 students. As we
receive more in-zone enrolments, we are constantly looking at
ways to minimise disruption to school routines and classes.
If you are leaving the school over the holiday break, we would
appreciate you letting the office know so we can make plans for
the future.
If you know of any families who are yet to enrol their
Kindergarten child for 2019, please let them know that we are
well underway with our planning and they should enrol their
child as soon as possible.
Bullying
Rutherford Public School is always looking at ways to minimise
bullying behaviours in the school. Conflict between students is
inevitable, but repeated and ongoing conflict needs to be
addressed quickly and resolved so all students feel safe and
valued. Parents and carers must be part of the solution. Over
the next few newsletters, we will highlight some of the ways the
school and community can work together to reduce bullying at
our school. Please contact the school if you are concerned
about potential bullying behaviour.
Bubbles and Supa Squirt Water Saving Show
Hunter Water will present the Bubbles and Supa Squirt Water
Saving show to all K to 2 students in the hall on Tuesday 19th
June 2018.
The comical romp highlights how wasteful individuals can be
with water and promotes simple ways to use less by instilling
water saving habits into everyday behaviour.
The fun-filled performance won the Performance in Schools
Award for 2014 and incorporates the use of clowning, circus
skills, magic, and music to deliver a very important lesson. The
show will be delivered to all K to 2 students for FREE.
We hope our K to 2 students take away some great tips on how
to be a water warrior!
NAIDOC 2018
Our NAIDOC assembly will take place on Monday 2 July at
9:30am. We would love for the community and our families to
attend. There will be a Smoking Ceremony, a performance
from our Baa Waa Girls and a whole school song. We hope to
see you there.
BAND PERSON OF THE WEEK:
This week we congratulate:
RYAN HEGGS
as Band Person of the Week for his
commitment to the Rutherford
School Concert Band.
Ryan is doing an excellent job
improving his drumming skills. Well
done Ryan!
Membership of the school band is open to students in Years 3 to 6. If you are interested in learning an instrument and joining
the band please see the front office for an information pack.
Tuition is available in a wide variety of brass, woodwind and
percussion instruments as well as bass guitar.
K-2 MUSIC PROGRAM
This week in the K-2 music program 1K, 1S and KE have been learning about dynamics and tempo. Students have learnt the terms piano (soft) and forte (loud) to describe the music they have been playing and listening to. Students have had fun learning how dynamics make music interesting to listen to and
how music can be a variety of different speeds.
Amarnii from 1S wrote about her music lesson during a recent
literacy lesson:
“In music we learned about dynamics. We learned about forte as well. It was so much fun. When we bang on the side drum it plays forte. We also learned about piano. Piano is soft music. When we bang on the tambor it is soft. We bang on the side
drum and the tambor with the mallet.”
Multicultural Public Speaking
The stage finals for The Premier's Challenge Multicultural
Public Speaking Finals will be held in the library on Monday
18th June. Stage 3 will run from 9:30am until approximately
11:30am.
The Stage 2 finals will begin at 12:30pm and finish around
1:00pm.
The local area finals will be held in the hall on Monday 25th
June, with Stage 2 from 9:30am to 11:30am and Stage 3 from
12:30pm to 3:00pm.
Sue Swetnam and John Quinn will be adjudicating.
The Red Shield Appeal
Thank you to everyone who dressed in red to support The Red Shield Appeal. The SRC sold over $200 worth of red goodies at recess time, and students donated money to come dressed in red. All of the donated money will be given to the Salvation
Army who we are sure will be very grateful.

Little Dragons are beginning to adapt to the routines and structures of school. Over the last few weeks we have started to
incorporate group activities which can include craft, scissor skills, and playdough and writing activities. Little Dragons have
now started saying ‘Goodbye’ to parents/carers at the door to prepare them for ‘Big School’. They have also learnt how to use
the toilets appropriately and wash their hands.
Please ensure you’re logged into Seesaw to keep up to date with photos and resources to support your child’s learning
journey to big school. If you do not have a note with the instructions on how to register, please see one of the Little
Dragons Teachers.
We are now taking enrolments for the group that will start the program on Thursday 26th July (Week 1 Term 3). Week 6 to
10 enrolments for this term have now closed.
Please ensure you have returned all necessary paperwork (student profile and
enrolment forms). We also encourage that you advise us of any medical
information that could be important to your child’s participation in the program.
Term 2 Feedback will be ready for parents at the start of term 3. This Feedback is
for children who started the program in Term 2. It gives parents an insight on how
their child is developing throughout the program. All students who participate
consistently in the Little Dragons program will receive feedback in Term 4 also.
Little Dragons who are already registered for the program should now be on
Flexischools (www.flexischools.com.au). This means parents can prepay for the
Father’s Day gift stall, and also participate in any P&C fundraisers during the year.
Keep in mind for next year, that lunch orders can only be placed via Flexischools.

Important Dates for your diary
Please make sure you are logged onto Seesaw. This is a fantastic way for teachers to communicate important information and
keep you involved in your child’s education. If you do not have a note for Seesaw, please ask your child’s classroom teacher.
CLASS OF THE WEEK: KT
In writing, KT have been learning to use capital letters, full stops and spaces between words. They have been very excited
and have become proud of their writing journey with Miss Tsang. At the end of a writing lesson, KT participate in a sharing
circle to observe and discuss each other’s work. Fabulous job KT!

Maitland Baptist Long Daycare Visits
This term Year 1 classes will be visiting Maitland Baptist Long Daycare on Tuesday afternoons. On their
visits, they will be reading stories to the younger children from the books that they have been reading in
class. So far 1S and 1B have been to visit and both had a wonderful time. The other year 1 classes will be
visiting later this term.
News from 2D and 2G
To conclude their Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) unit from Term One where they
researched construction methods of the world’s strongest bridges and then attempted to build their own
bridge, students from 2D and 2G took a tour of local bridges in the Maitland area on Friday 8th June.
Students also spent some time at the Morpeth Museum to take at look at artefacts from yester years. A
great day was had by all.

In the coming weeks we will begin to take a look inside all the Stage 2 classrooms.
This week we will focus on K/6J!
K/6J are studying some exciting topics in their classroom, and one of these topics is Rainforests! As you can see they have
been working hard to create a display representing the habitat of the rainforest, “Watch out, the animals in the rainforest b ite!”
They have been looking closely at the types of animals found in the rainforest and also where rainforests can be located in the
world. I was so impressed when I visited and it was amazing to see such fantastic illustrations.

K/6J Excursion
On Friday 22 June, K/6J will travel by bus to the Hunter Valley Zoo. This excursion will support their
learning of animals and the animal’s habitats. There will be some great pictures to come, so watch this
space.

need a new one please see the ladies in the office. We would appreciate permission notes and money being

YOUTH ENVIRONMENT FORUM
Four superb members of Year 6 came along to a Maitland City Council youth environment forum with Mr Burke-Smith last
week. There were many environmental messages presented and encouraged. Our students have signed up for a tree
planting day. There is also some talk about a special native garden. Watch this space.
WEBBIE WONDERLAND
Webbie Wonderland took place last week on Thursday 7th June. Students were able to select an activity that they were
interested in to celebrate making positive choices and taking cues from our PBL lessons!
SPORT
PSSA Soccer, Basketball and Softball have taken place this past fortnight as the teachers and students strive for success in
our local area. Great work and best of luck in future events.
CANBERRA NOTES
The second note to prepare for Canberra has now been sent home. This note included the medical and dietary information
section. Please return the section to school as soon as possible. Please also note that numbers for this camp have now been
finalised meaning that we are unable to take any extra students. Please let your classroom teacher know if you need another
