Introduction

The twenty Reading Lessons in Russian Level 4 tell a story, «Мечты сбываются» - “Dreams Come True,” which will provide practice in reading and expand your vocabulary. You will identify some of the grammatical points and structures, as well as many idiomatic expressions that you have learned in this and previous Levels. English translation is provided at the end of the story. The audio portion of the Reading Lessons is at the end of the course. Instructions on how to do the Reading Lessons are contained in the audio.

As you know, Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. A full listing of the alphabet has been included for your reference, beginning on page 2. In the Reading Lessons that follow it is assumed that you have completed the Reading Lessons in the previous levels and are comfortable reading Cyrillic. If not, you may wish to go back and review. There is no definitive rule for stress in Russian, but the stress is always on a vowel. In words with more than one vowel, we have shown the stressed vowel in boldface.

Cyrillic Alphabet

The Cyrillic alphabet is composed of 33 letters, listed in order starting below, along with a guide to the sounds represented by each letter. Many Russian letters (mostly vowels, but also some consonants) have more than one sound, depending on the amount of stress given to the letter or its position in the word. The examples listed in the “Guide to Pronunciation” are approximate English equivalents—as in any language, the pronunciations will vary slightly in different letter combinations.

You should also remember that these pronuncia-tions should only be taken as guidelines. It’s best to learn and practice the pronunciations that you hear the speakers use, trying to make yours sound as close as possible to theirs, rather than worrying too much about the English equivalents.

I very much wanted to get to know better ...Russian people, and to socialize ...with young people, such as I am. [lit. “with such, as I, young people.”]I very much like to be involved in sports.Evgeny offered to go to Gorky Park.As I understood, it’s a huge park, where entertaining events are going on.In summer it’s possible to play volleyball there, to ride a bicycle,to watch movies in the open air ...or simply to get suntan and do some reading.In winter there a skating rink and a snowboard park open up.My friend - is a big lover of hockey, and on weekends he often comes to the park ...to play a friendly match.I observed how many people ...were resting in Gorky Park that day.Families, couples in love, tourists ...and sports enthusiasts.It reminded me of Central Park in New York.

Today - is my last day in Moscow.I’ve managed to see a lot and fall in love with it.I would like to return sometime ...to this bustling and colorful city.Today it is imperative for me to buy ... [lit. “Today to me imperatively need to buy ...”]souvenirs for my family and friends.Downtown there are so many stores,I’m puzzled where to go, and where ...is (a) better (place) to buy souvenirs.On Arbat (Street) I saw many artists ...and souvenir shops.But Evgeny explained to me, that in tourist places ...the prices will be very increasedI remembered, that his mother advised ...a store not far from them, where it’s possible to buy ...wonderful traditional Russian souvenirs.There are matrioshki, Pavlaposadsky shawls, hand-painted Khokhloma wooden dish.For myself I decided to buy a book with views of Moscow.

I just now remembered,that I had run out of cash.Evgeny said, that all major stores ... accept credit cards, and I shouldn’t have any problems.And if I need cash, then it’s possible to easily withdraw money from account ...using the ATM.I followed advice of my friend.And also I bought a ticket for the train to Petersburg!It’s an overnight train - “Grand Express,” So-called “Hotel on wheels.”I always wanted to go for a ride on such a train ...with its comfortable compartments!My ride will last eight hours.I will be in Petersburg early in the morning.I’m sad, that the time in Moscow ...flew by so quickly.I will miss Evgeny and his family.Although I’m looking forward to the trip to Petersburg.

In Petersburg I don’t have any friends.But on the train I got acquainted ...with a wonderful young couple from Petersburg.They are - students of Petersburg University.They spoke English very well, and were interested in how I liked Russia.I said, that I so far had seen only Moscow, and I had liked everything very much. The young couple, Maxim and Anna, told me that Petersburg is considered ... the cultural capital of Russia.The city was built by Peter the Great under the influence of ...French and Italian architects.Peter dreamt of creating Venice in Russia.In the city there are multiple channels and bridges.Original architecture can not leave you ...unimpressed and not conquered with its beauty.Maxim and Anna promised to be my guides, and to show me “Piter,” as it’s called for short in Russia.

I’ve been in Piter already two days.It differs very much from Moscow.Here life, it seems, does not run, but flows.Nobody hurries anywhere.In my opinion, people enjoy life in Piter.Although my new friends explained to me, that it’s because, now it’s summer and ...the season of white nights.Because of the geographic situation of Petersburg,from the end of May until mid July ...it doesn’t get dark at night. During this time until late there are held ...various festivals and concerts ...in the open air.And at a different time of the year in Petersburg ...it is usually overcast and often rains.Maxim and Anna are entertaining me ...with outings to the most fashionable bars ...and night clubs in St. Petersburg.I did not expect such variety from this city!

One of the most wonderful ...touristic places of Petersburg - it’s the Hermitage!The museum complex is located ...along river Neva on Palace Square.One of the largest museums in the world.Over there it’s possible to spend days and weeks ...studying objects of art.I, of course, am not a fine art expert, but I was impressed by Hermitage. Also I was struck by the beauty of Peterhof.It’s often called the Russian Versailles.It’s an incredible palace-museum, with huge parks and gardens.Peterhof is famous for its fountains.At first I got lost there, but then found and watched ...ten most famous fountains.I photographed everything meticulously, the view of ...Gulf of Finland from the palace and the palace itself.This is photo report for my family.

I decided to get delayed in Russia ...for two more weeks.I was convinced, that to see ...only Moscow and Petersburg - is not enough ...in order to really understand ...this huge and historically rich country.From my new friends I’ve learned about ...Lake Baikal in the south of Siberia.It’s the deepest lake on Earth.Mountainous terrain surrounds Baikal.The wild nature of the area is famous ...for its beauty and unspoiled quality.I wanted very much to be ...far from city life and ...to take a camping trip to Baikal.Turns out - it was very easy.I got in touch with a travel agency and ... booked a tour for six days.I said good bye to my Petersburg friends ...and ventured into a new journey.

Upon arrival to Baikal,I inhaled fresh air and ...felt a surge of energy.I ordered a group tour around the Baikal.Our tour-guide, Mikhail, told ...our team about the route.He was born and grew up in this region.He knows the trail, along which we will go ...by heart.Our team consists of ...eight people, plus Mikhail’s assistant.Mostly all foreigners, but I’m ...the only American.Everyone is in a great mood,and ready for adventures.The first part of our tour is, a climb to the Chersky Peak.The view from there must be exciting!Also along the way ...we are supposed to see waterfalls.

For these few days of camping ...How much I’ve seen and learned!The local residents ...The local residents of Baikal - are the Buryats.The Buryats belong to the Mongolian nation ...and speak in the Russian and Buryat languages.Their traditions and customs honor nature.Prevailing dishes here - [lit. Prevailing here dishes -]it’s fish and meat [dishes.] We were offered for tasting zaguday - salad out of raw fish, seasoned with salt, pepper and oil.I thought that it’s the same, as eating sushi ...and bravely tried it.It was very delicious!The local Buryats gave us tea to drink ...with Baikal herbs.The tea was very hot, aromatic and energizing.

Today we have a cruise on the lake ...around the largest island on Baikal - the island of the sun - Olkhon.We will be taken to it on ... a motorized catamaran, and there ...we will be able to switch for kayaks, and to take a one-hour tour ...to one of the sandy beaches,in order to rest, to get suntan, and swim. Today our entire team is tired ...and sleepy, as we sat till late ...by the fire, drank strong Russian drinks ...and from the bottom of our hearts sang along with a guitar.Rather Mikhail sang.He plays guitar and sings very well.He tried to teach us Russian songs.At first we all were shy, but after he treated us ...to beer and real Russian vodka, we all sang along with him with pleasure!

The journey along Baikal ...turned out for me fateful.On our team I got acquainted ...with a very attractive and kind young woman.She was born in Russia,but grew up in Germany.Her parents moved to Frankfurt ...in the beginning of nineties.She freely speaks Russian, German, French and English.She helped me to communicate ...with local residents ...and to bargain at the market, when we were buying souvenirs.She also loves very much to travel ...and we always had something to talk about.On the camping trip we spent a lot of time together ...and became good friends.I taught her how to catch fish.And she taught me how to prepare it.

The six days of our camping trip ...passed with the speed of light.It came time for us to part.I really didn’t want to leave ...and say good-bye to Katia.Katerina - is the name of the young woman to which ...I have gotten so much attached within this week.I’ve yet never met ...such a charming young woman.And in addition so smart and interesting!We for hours talked ...about everything in the world! Katia is graduating ...with a biology major in Frankfurt.She came to Russia for the summer.She has some relatives left here.She told me, that not long ago ...she started visiting Russia.Prior to that her parents ...didn’t let her go, because they were afraid,that she wouldn’t want to return to Germany.

Katia invited me to fly in ...to visit them in Germany.I have never yet been to this country.She promised to show me the city, and said that I could stop over at her parents’.They have a big apartment, and they are always glad to have guests.I, of course, very much wanted ... to prolong our time with Katia.I decided we have only one life, it’s necessary to use all the chances, that it gives us.I found tickets back to home ...to the U.S.A. via Frankfurt, with a stop there for two days.And those were an amazing two days!I got to see what a wonderful ...family Katia has, and how she is ...attentive and caring.I do not regret, that I flew in to Frankfurt.
