Dungeoneering is a unique skill in Runescape as it relies on all other skills to some degree. Both free-to-play and paid members are able to train this skill, but free-to-play members have restrictions on items and floors available. There are many different ways to train dungeoneering and so a pure skiller or pure combat character can still level up

efficiently. However, for pure skiller characters they will need to rely on group dungeoneering rather than doing it solo as there are combat elements used throughout.

Dungeoneering Basics

The whole skill takes place in the Dungeons of Daemonheim. There is no set skill requirement to actually train the skill, but having higher skills will mean better equipment and additional abilities are available. Both individuals and groups of up to five people can raid a dungeon floor. The complexity level of the floor can be chosen with complexity ranging from level 1 to level 6. The dungeons are randomly generated each time you enter and can either be small, medium or large. Solo dungeoneers and groups of two can only choose small or medium floors while groups of 3-5 can choose between small, medium and large.

It is located along the east coast of the wilderness so can be dangerous to get there if

going via the wild. There is a safer way to get there by ferry which is located on the dock

behind Al-Kharid bank. Simply follow the path up to the bank area to remove and deposit all items.

Page 3: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

Speak to the Dungeoneering tutor to receive a Ring of Kinship. This ring makes it

possible to teleport directly to Daemonheim whenever you want to. It has unlimited free charges and can be worn in the ring location. The ring teleport option works for

both free-to-play worlds and member worlds, but will not work beyond level 20 wild. The ring is also the best way to get back to Daemonheim after visiting it the first time. It

is also necessary to be able to form a party to raid a dungeon.

Forming a dungeoneering party To form a raiding party you need a ring of kinship. If you have lost it, the dungeoneering tutor can replace it for you. The three options available are: 1. A solo party 2. A group of 2-5 players 3. An auto-grouped party Solo Raiding Parties:

Many players choose to do solo raiding parties on the lower floors as they can rush through and complete dungeons quickly. Forming a solo party is quick. Simply left-click the ring of kinship to bring up the party formation screen then click on the form party option to create the raiding party.

If you form the party you will automatically be set as the party leader. It is also simple to

form a raiding party of 2-5 players by clicking on the invite player option and entering their name. You and can also invite other players by right-clicking on a player and

selecting invite.

Page 4: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

Any player you invite into the party must be on the same world and within the Daemonheim area. Players can accept the invite, decline it or decline invites forever. If decline forever option is selected it prevents that party leader inviting you again during that gaming session. Only four invitations can be open at any time. The auto-grouping option is only able to take place within the specific rooms in Daemonheim Castle courtyard. The different barriers represent the different requirements. There is a free-for-all room with no requirements. The other barriers lead to rooms where players need to have completed previous floors. There is a barrier for each of the different floor types - frozen, abandoned I, abandoned II, furnished, occult

and warped. The game automatically tries to form a new raiding party every 30 seconds, although most people generally prefer to invite friends.

Every player in the group has to have unlocked the floor and complexity level for them

to be able to enter the dungeon. The group leader is able to select an appropriate floor as they can see which floors all members have already completed. Ideally, all members will raid dungeons they have not yet completed so they can maximize the amount of experience available.

Selecting a dungeon floor

Initially, the only floor available is floor 1. As you complete each floor you will gradually unlock more floors. You will also need to have a Dungeoneering level that is twice that

of the floor you want to access. So if you wanted to get access to floor 30, you would have to have completed floor 29 at least once and also have a dungeoneering level of

59.

Page 5: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

Free-to-play members will only be able to access up to floor 35 while paid members can access up to floor 60. The further down into the dungeon you go, the more dangerous

and powerful the monsters become. The experience rewards also increase with a higher base floor experience modifier used for each floor.

Selecting a dungeon complexity level Simply put, the higher the complexity level of a dungeon the more other skills can be used within it. The following breakdown outlines which skills and abilities are used at different complexity levels: 1. Combat only - 50% XP penalty 2. Combat + cooking, firemaking, woodcutting, fishing - 45% penalty 3. Complexity 2 + creating weapons, mining, runecrafting - 40% penalty

4. Complexity 3 + farming textiles, hunting, creating armor - 35% penalty 5. Complexity 4 + farming seeds, herblore, thieving, summoning, construction - 30% penalty 6. All skills and abilities above with no penalty

Page 6: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

Enabling the guide mode will make the dungeon easier by showing the critical path to take, but it will incur another experience penalty. The most efficient way to maximize

experience is to raid dungeons on complexity level 6 without the guide mode enabled. However, it may be more efficient to do the lowest floors on a lower complexity to be able to get through them quicker. Then you can do the higher floors in a group to get better experience. Small dungeons will have a random configuration of up to 16 squares while medium dungeons will have up to 32 squares and large dungeons can have up to 64 squares. For groups, the party leader can also choose the difficulty level. It is advisable to choose the difficulty level based on the number of players within the group that will be actively doing combat.

The start room

Once everything is set up you can begin. The start room is where all party members will enter the dungeon. The Smuggler is available to trade for things and depending on the complexity level chosen will have different things available. There are no items available on complexity 1. The table also holds some items that members can make use of and if a low complexity level is chosen, all members will start with a set of magic, range and melee combat gear.

Page 7: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

Items within the dungeon all have tiers. The higher the tier level the better the item is. For example, a tier 8 food item will heal a lot more lifepoints than a tier 2 item. Similarly, when it comes to armor, the different tiers determine the level required to wear or wield the item. Free-to-play members can only wear or wield up to tier 5 items (Fractite).

The start room also houses a group gatestone. This makes it easy to regroup if a member dies or needs to get back to the group quickly. Players will also respawn in the

start room if they die or if they use the home teleport option.

Raiding the dungeons

Each floor has its own boss, which must be defeated in order to proceed to the next floor. However, not all rooms within a floor need to be completed to be able to get to

the boss monster. If you or your team succeeds in clearing every room, including any

bonus rooms, it will increase the bonus modifier experience available for completing the floor. Some people prefer to only clear the essential rooms rather than clearing the

bonus rooms. This makes the floor a bit quicker to complete, but may lead to slightly less bonus experience.

The higher the level of complexity, the more types of rooms and skills will be available.

On complexity level 6, all types are available. This includes the basic combat rooms, potentially all types of skills as well as challenge rooms and a boss monster. On

complexity level 1, only combat rooms and a boss monster are available.

Page 8: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

The objective is to get to the boss monster as soon as possible. In order to access some

doors you will need the right key to unlock them. Players should always pick up a colored key if they see them as it may be critical to getting to the boss room quickly. In

groups, normally one person is assigned to collect all keys so each member knows who should attempt to unlock each door.

Additionally, you may need to complete a challenge or have a high enough skill level to gain access. There are numerous different skill doors available and frequently players

may need to boost their skill to a high enough level to be able to gain access.

Page 9: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

For group raids, the ring of kinship makes it possible to view the inventory of other team members. This lets you find out who is carrying a key if the designated key collector doesn't have it in their inventory. Typically, the person carrying the group gatestone will also be the nominated key collector. This makes it possible for all other group members to quickly get back to them if they fall behind. A player can use the home teleport option and then jump through the group gatestone teleport in the starting room. This will bring them to wherever the person carrying the group gatestone is standing. It if an efficient way for all members to regroup quickly when the boss room is located.

Monsters within the dungeons come in all shapes and sizes. They also attack using

Magic, Range or Melee. Most groups prefer to set up all members as melee as this is usually the most efficient. However, some boss monsters are easier to defeat when

using range or mage rather than melee. Although most of the other monsters can still be defeated more efficiently using melee. If a player dies in a dungeon they will respawn in the start room. They can quickly get back to the group using the group gatestone. Each death within a dungeon will also

incur an experience modifier when the floor is completed. If the player carrying the group gatestone dies, they will drop it in the room they died in. If this is the boss room,

it means any player using the group gatestone in the start room will automatically end up in the boss room - so be careful if you are not prepared for it.

Dungeoneering rewards

Page 10: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

After defeating the boss monster, a 30 second timer starts before all group members

are taken to the next floor. Each member will see their own floor end screen which breaks down the amount of experience they gained for their efforts during that floor.

The total experience awarded is made up of several things such as the floor level, the previous progress or prestige level as well as the floor size, complexity and whether the

player died or not during that floor.

After completing a floor, players may get a drop from the boss monster. It can range

from tier 1 up to tier 5 if free-to-play, while it can range from tier 1 up to tier 11 for paid members. Players have the option of binding the item, but most people prefer to make

their own items and binding them.

When an item is binded, it is retained for every subsequent dungeon raided. There is a limit to the amount of items a player can bind and this is linked to their dungeoneering

level. Only one item can be bound at level 1 while 2 items can be bound at level 50, 3

items at level 100 and 4 items at level 120. Players can also bind one type of arrow or rune which doesn't count towards the limit. This will bind 125 arrows or runes of one

type.

Players will also receive dungeoneering tokens for each dungeon completed. The tokens are based on the amount of experienced gained during each raid. It is 10% of the

experience gained rounded down. So 3507 experience will yield 305 tokens. The tokens can be traded in at the rewards trader located near the ring of kinship teleport spot and

exchanged for various things. Members can customize their ring of kingship using the tokens earned for completing dungeons. This turns the ring into a class ring which can become a melee class, mage

Page 11: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

class, range class or skiller class. There are 3 roles available in each class which provides

a small boost in one aspect. The chosen role can be upgraded from tier 1 to tier 10. At tier 1, the melee class and tank option provides 6% damage reduction while tier 10

provides 15% damage reduction.

Players can only benefit from one role at a time, but each of the different roles can be upgraded. The higher the tier, the more tokens are required to upgrade it. Most players

prefer to use their tokens on the other rewards before considering enhancing the ring of kinship beyond the basics. Players can purchase the following rewards with their dungeoneering tokens. Some of the rewards are available to all players, but the majority of rewards are available to members only. The list of rewards and the cost of tokens are:

Surface resource dungeons

There are numerous resources dungeons that players can access after they have reached a certain dungeoneering level. The first time the dungeon is located will grant the player some bonus experience. All subsequent visits will only provide the benefit of an additional area to train or gather resources. Some of the dungeons are extremely worthwhile using while others have limited appeal. This is a brief overview of the dungeon locations, resources, requirements and experience available for locating them initially.

Dungeoneering XP reward: 15,000 Prestige level

The prestige level affects the base experience level used in calculating the final

experience gained for completing each dungeon floor. Resetting the prestige level at the right time ensures a player gains the maximum experience possible between floors. For

example, if a player has completed every floor from floor 1 to floor 20, but does not have a high enough dungeoneering level to open floor 21, they should reset their

progress level to lock in the base prestige level.

Page 15: RuneScape Dungeoneering Guide

Resetting progress marks all previous floors completed as incomplete. This means the

player can complete floors 1 through to floor 20 again and gain the maximum experience. If the player didn't reset, they would get a lot less experience for completing

a floor they had already completed.

Dungeoneering training strategies

There are a few strategies available to players. Many prefer to do solo raids and rushing the lowest floors. This can range from floor 1 right up to floor 30. From floor 30 onwards, players will usually prefer group raids. This is because it is more efficient to raid the higher level floors in larger groups. The amount of experience earned for completing a large floor at level 31 is much greater than completing a small or medium floor. Other players prefer to do rushing strategies in groups of players who are all around the same dungeoneering level. Doing small floors means they can be completed quickly.

Even with an experience penalty, group rushing strategies can yield more experience in the same amount of time as more floors can be completed. Eventually, when reaching the higher floors, a large dungeon will give the best experience return per hour. Typically, the fastest floors to complete will be on small dungeons and gain less experience per floor. Some players prefer to skill a bit while dungeoneering with friends. It is not advisable to skill while in a rushing group as this can result in being kicked and gaining no experience. It is therefore advisable to form a group with people who have the same strategy in mind.

Jagex did update how group average experience worked and now if the average combat level is above 90, the base experience level for all members is reduced by 50%. This will

impact on free-to-play dungeoneers who need to ensure their groups are balanced so as to avoid this penalty.

Dungeoneering is designed to work best as a team skill. However, players can complete

it solo. The various strategies available normally mean working with other players around a similar dungeoneering level and skill level is best. However, people sometimes prefer raiding dungeons with friends and therefore accept the disadvantages associated

with some people not being able to get involved with the combat element.
