Run with Perseverance By: Pastor Michael Woldt I earned a third place medal in the last 5K (3.1 mile) race I completed. Not because I'm fast. I received the award because I'm old. It was an "age group" medal, and, truth be told, there weren't many other runners over the age of 60 who were competing for the award. As we continue to celebrate David's Star's 175th anniversary, there is a temptation to celebrate simply because we, as a congregation, are older than most other Lutheran churches in the state of Wisconsin. We want to remember with gratitude to God the blessings of the past. It is no small thing that this congregation has faithfully proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout its history. To God alone be the glory. However, focusing with nostalgia on the glory of days gone can be debilitating, even disheartening, leading to the conclusion that the best days of David's Star are in the past. The human body inevitably grows physically weak. I will never run as fast as I once did. If I ran as fast as I did three decades ago, I might even win my age group instead of finishing third. The same does not necessarily hold true for the congregation that ages. The very gospel we proclaim serves as our "fountain of youth." The message of the gospel renews us. We live in the shelter of God's love and grace as our ascended Lord positions us in the world to share his saving grace with those around us. By God's grace we will remember that our purpose as a congregation is not simply to exist and become older. Our purpose as a congregation is to encourage each other in our walk with Jesus, and to carry out the Great Commission the Lord has given to his Church. "Go and make disciples of all nations!" (Matthew 28). The wording of the purpose statement found in our congregation's constitution is a little clumsy by today's standards for catchy mission statements, but it is worth reviewing from time to time. It reminds us why we are still here. June 2018 Volume XX, Number 10 It expresses why David's Star is worth supporting with our offerings and prayers, our time and energy. Here it is: This congregation shall strive to proclaim the Law and the Gospel; to lead sinners to repentance and faith in Christ Jesus for life and salvation; to strengthen believers in faith and sanctification through the Means of Grace; to equip believers as disciples, stewards, and witnesses for sharing the Gospel of Jesus with our fellowmen. The continuing purpose of this congregation, as a group of Christians, and its ultimate objective, is to serve all people in God’s world with his Gospel. All members of this congregation shall strive to proclaim the joys of a Christian life and to witness for Christ to the best of their individual abilities (1 Jn. 5:1-10) We may be old as a congregation, but the gospel empowers us to serve the Lord each new day with renewed vigor and strength. As it says in Isaiah 40:31: "Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Remember the blessings of the past with gratitude. Rejoice in the blessings we currently enjoy through our church and school. Then, don't forget what comes next. Reach out! Share the gospel. That's our continuing purpose and reason for existing! With our strength renewed in the Lord, we will run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1), even in our old age!

I earned a third place medal in the last 5K (3.1 mile) race I completed. Not because I'm fast. I

received the award because I'm old. It was an "age group" medal, and, truth be told, there weren't many other runners over the age of 60

who were competing for the award.

As we continue to celebrate David's Star's 175th anniversary, there is a temptation to celebrate

simply because we, as a congregation, are older than most other Lutheran churches in the state of

Wisconsin. We want to remember with gratitude to God the blessings of the past. It is no small thing that this congregation has faithfully

proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout its history. To God alone be the glory. However, focusing with nostalgia on the glory of days gone

can be debilitating, even disheartening, leading to the conclusion that the best days of David's Star are in the past.

The human body inevitably grows physically weak. I will never run as fast as I once did. If I ran as fast as I did three decades ago, I might

even win my age group instead of finishing third. The same does not necessarily hold true for the congregation that ages. The very gospel we

proclaim serves as our "fountain of youth." The message of the gospel renews us. We live in the shelter of God's love and grace as our ascended

Lord positions us in the world to share his saving grace with those around us. By God's grace we will remember that our purpose as a congregation

is not simply to exist and become older. Our purpose as a congregation is to encourage each other in our walk with Jesus, and to carry out the

Great Commission the Lord has given to his Church. "Go and make disciples of all nations!" (Matthew 28).

The wording of the purpose statement found in our congregation's constitution is a little clumsy by today's standards for catchy mission

statements, but it is worth reviewing from time to time. It reminds us why we are still here.

Volume XX, Number 10

It expresses why David's Star is worth supporting

with our offerings and prayers, our time and energy. Here it is:

This congregation shall strive to proclaim the Law and the Gospel; to lead sinners to repentance and faith in Christ Jesus for life

and salvation; to strengthen believers in faith and sanctification through the Means of Grace; to equip believers as disciples,

stewards, and witnesses for sharing the Gospel of Jesus with our fellowmen.

The continuing purpose of this

congregation, as a group of Christians, and its ultimate objective, is to serve all people

in God’s world with his Gospel.

All members of this congregation shall strive to proclaim the joys of a Christian

life and to witness for Christ to the best of

their individual abilities (1 Jn. 5:1-10)

We may be old as a congregation, but the gospel empowers us to serve the Lord each new

day with renewed vigor and strength. As it says in Isaiah 40:31: "Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like

eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Remember the blessings of the past with

gratitude. Rejoice in the blessings we currently enjoy through our church and school. Then, don't forget what comes next. Reach out! Share the

gospel. That's our continuing purpose and reason for existing! With our strength renewed in the Lord, we will run with perseverance the race

175TH ANNIVERSARY FACTS

DID YOU KNOW?

Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, and civil

war broke out in 1861. At that time, our

congregation was just 18 years old (younger

than Morning Star is today).

A number of members from David’s Star served

in the Union Army, and a few never returned

home. Seven Civil War veterans are buried in

our church cemetery. They include; Carl

Dallmann, William Dallmann, William Gutzmann,

Fred Schreiber, Christian Tischer, William

Tischer, and Ernest Hillmann.

Pastors’ Report (Pastor Woldt)

What a blessing to witness an adult baptism at

our church this month! Please keep all of our

newer members in your prayers. The pastors

(together with our male called teachers) will be

attending the SEW district convention on June

choosing of a congregational delegate is on the

agenda. Among the routine but important pieces

of convention business are the election of a

district presidium and also a circuit pastor for our

group of congregations. A distribution has been

made from our assistance fund to help David's

Star students who are attending our WELS

ministerial education schools. The students are

Andrew Eggers (MLC), Joey Loescher (MLC),

Caleb Gustafson (MLC) and Livia Lickteig (MLC).

Each student has had $725.00 applied to their

tuition bill for the 2018-19 school year. Caleb and

Livia also qualify for a matching amount through
