Striving for great thingsPage 1 Moura Minor 21 st June, 2018 In this edition: Athletics Carnival STEM Day Dear Students, Parents/Caregivers and Friends, Normally at this stage of a term we are looking at holidays only being in the next couple of days. This time, though, we still have another week of school to go. Students need to be at school every day as there is plenty of teaching and learning to occur, and focus needs to remain on our Four Be’s. This week we welcome Mya Theodore and Conor Hartwell as Year 10 work experience students. Conor is working with Mr Chantler while Mya is with Miss Utick. Welcome back, Conor and Mya! The feedback about the STEM Day for our Year 6’s at Moura SHS on Tuesday has been fantastic. Congratulations to Elly and Sarah on their organisation of the day. It was an awesome day on the oval yesterday for our annual athletics carnival after a chilly start. The weather was close to perfect once the wind dropped off, maximum effort given and lots of smiles covered faces. Well done, Mr Chantler and your team of helpers for your preparations and tasks on the day. A special thank you to Barb Forster for your efforts in getting the grounds ready for the day. This was much appreciated. And also to the Moura SHS students we had helping – Andie, Molly, Noah, Ryan. Add in a few parent helpers and we had many hands making light work! More physical activity for the whole school is on the calendar for the final day of the term with the P&C Association Fun Run being held. The last time the Fun Run was held, students ran beyond the Gold Coast. I wonder how far they will run this time. Sponsorship forms were distributed last week. If you want another one, there are spares on the noticeboard in the Office. Forms and money need to be returned by Friday 29 June. On Monday, we host the Callide-Dawson Moderation day. Teachers from across the schools will meet to moderate student work from Term 2. This helps to ensure that what one teacher rates a work sample as is the same as other teachers in other schools. Thank you to Michelle Lang for coordinating our turn to host the Moderation day. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Congratulations to Oxley House for earning the Champion House Trophy of the day and to Sturt House for winning the Spirit Trophy. Congratulations also to the Age Champions and Runners Up. A good sports is always made better when there are records broken and yesterday we had two new records set – Garreth Walkube for 11 years Shot Put (old 20.68m, new 22.73m) and Alicia Rassmussen for 9 years 100m (old 16.66sec, new 16.58sec). Congratulations to you both!

Moura SS will be hosting the Dawson Valley Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 18 July. REPORT CARDS Semester One 2018 report cards are being prepared. Expect to see report cards in your children’s school bags on 25 June. Some reports cards will indicate whether an interview is requested. If your report card says this, please follow up by making an appointment with the respective teacher. Of course you are all welcome to have an interview with your child’s teacher but please note that as we had a formal interview period at the beginning of Term 2 we will not be having set times for interviews in Week 11. STATIONERY SUPPLIES With holiday time approaching, please start a shopping list of items your child will need to restock depleted supplies. Pencils, erasers and other such items should be put at the top of the list. RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN FOR STUDENTS Silver Certificates: These will be presented at Parade on Monday 25 June. As this is a big parade, no Bee Awards will be presented. Student of the Week awards will be presented as per normal. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

P&C News

Thank You Thank you to everyone who supported the canteen for Athletics Day yesterday. Funds raised will go directly to projects that the P&C are supporting within the school.

Fun Run A fun run will be held on Friday 29th June (last day of the term). A sponsorship form has been sent home with every student this week with information about this Fun Run. If you have not received this flyer, there are spare ones available from the office. Please remember that Fun Run money is to be handed in to the office by Friday 29th June.

Next Meeting Our next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 25th July at 6.30pm in the Moura State School Library. We are trialling different meeting times and days in the hope of attracting more members to attend meetings. Please come along if you can. Your involvement helps keep our P&C running smoothly and allows us to further improve your child’s school.

Save The Date The P&C are running the canteen at the Dawson Valley Drovers game on Saturday 21st July. We will need volunteers to operate the kitchen and bar (no RSA is needed) between 12pm and 8pm, so if you can spare an hour (or 2), please contact Angela Mallinson on 0409 829 208. A roster will be drafted and placed on the Moura State School P&C Facebook page. Junior Drovers will also be happening! The kids have a great time learning ball handling skills, some of the rules of Rugby Union and finish off the session with a mini game.

State of Origin Calcutta Don’t forget that we are also running a Calcutta at the Coal N Cattle Hotel on Sunday night for the 2nd game of State of Origin. We will start the auction at 7pm with game kick off at 8pm.

STEM Day FAKE NEWS – MOURA HAS UNEARTHED A

VOLCANO Year 6 & 7 STEM DAY Tuesday 19th June 2018

“A blast has uncovered a dormant volcano at Dawson Mine, your task today students are to use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) knowledge and skills to investigate ways to ensure the safety of Moura…” Mr Wade Reynolds Anglo American Surveyor from Dawson Mine captivated the eager 80 students from Moura State High and Moura Primary School. The students were exposed to the technical skills set of a surveyor who showed them a M600 Drone, Phantom Drone, Surveyor measuring tools that use GPS and digital mapping.

Students were then separated into four mixed groups of Year 6 & 7 students. Science with Mrs Conway involved looking at exothermic, oxidising reactions in elephant toothpaste and sparkler reactions. Each student was able to make their own mini volcano in a test tube with vinegar (acetic acid) and bi carbonate soda (sodium bicarbonate) that creates an impressive build-up of Carbon Dioxide gas bubbles.

Technology run by Miss Fiedler and Mr Hayes O’Sullivan showed the students how to program a robot to navigate a mapped area by following a maze like path to find hypothetical victims from a volcano eruption.

Engineering guided by Ms Duivemann was creating buildings made from toothpicks and marshmallows that were placed on jelly trays to test whether they would withstand an earthquake tremor. Students had to demonstrate their problem solving skills with unique design.

Mathematics with Mr Danziger investigated whether civilians could escape an active volcano. Using mathematical equations students worked on several senarios and the likelihood of being able to “outrun” the lava flow. As seen by latest volcano eruptions in Hawaii the slow lava can travel at 10km/hr while high volcanic explosive have been measured to travel from 50- 60km/ hr.

This day would not have happened without the dedication of Mrs Conway and Miss Fiedler and the support of Principal Mr Duff and Ms Bowkett. The support staff at Moura High and Teachers and Teacher aides all made the day very memorable for all involved.

I would like to make a special mention of our contributors to our STEM Day – Biloela Woolworths, CQU, SQU, Online STEM, Griffith University, Banana Shire Council Libraries, Anglo American Dawson Mine, Moura State High School and Moura Primary State School.

As the end of term is

approaching,
