Short History of Ruhpolding

• In the 6th Century, immigration of the first Bavarian tribes (name of town „bei den Leuten des Ruhpold“ – “at the people of Ruhpold“). First documented mention 924 A.D.

• From 1529 first regular use of the remote valley with an annual Deer and Game Feast held by the dukes of Bavaria. Duke Wilhelm IV had a hunting lodge built here in 1535.

• 1873 Foundation of the Ruhpolding Improvement Association (renamed the Transport Association in 1925)

• 1895 Opening of the railway route to Traunstein• 1933 Arrival of the first Degener Special Train (travel agents Dr. Degener from Berlin) with

around 400 guests• 1953 Rauschberg railway starts operating• From 1960 until the present day ongoing investments in the tourist infrastructure (tennis courts,

forest stadium, sports hall, Unternberg chair lift, ice rink, outdoor pool, Ruhpolding leisure park, biathlon facilities, 9-hole golf course, 4 museums, 1st indoor wave pool in the Alps, and much more)

• 2000 new snow machines on the Unternberg and Westernberg slopes with floodlights. • 2000 complete renovation of the indoor wave pool, expanded with sauna landscape and outdoor

salt-water pools and a new childrens´area an 76 m slide• Since 2003, Ruhpolding is the first „childrens´town“ in Upper Bavaria, i.e. the town was awarded

the rating of being particularly child an family friendly.

Customs and Traditions

In Ruhpolding, local customs and traditions are held in high esteem. The two folklore associations and their bands made an important contribution to preserving these traditions. Bavarian culture permeates our daily life, is celebrated in our traditional dress an festivals, and our guests are heartily welcome to join it.

Day Excursions

Munich – the „Bavarian capital“: (120 km)

Munich lies at about 120 km from Ruhpolding an can easily be reached via the motorway Munich-Salzburg (A8) in about 11/2 hours. Munich is most famous for its Oktoberfest – the world´s Greatest Folk Festival. But Munich is also rich in history and has many sights like palaces, parks, museums, etc.

Salzburg – World Cultural Heritage Site: (40 km)

Salzburg is known throughout the world as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as a city of incomparable architectural beauty an a high-ranking cultural city. The UNESCO listed Salzburg´s historic centre as a World Heritage Site in 1997.

Lake Chiemsee an the Castle Herrenchiemsee: (20 km)

On of „Mad“ King Ludwig´s fairytale castles lies on an island in a beautiful Bavarian Lake – the Chiemsee. Boat trips take the visitors to the castle and two smaller islands in the lake.

Biathlon Every January the world's elite in biathlon sports meet in Ruhpolding. Thousands of biathlon fans make the pilgrimage to this unique sporting event every year to experience the thrilling tournaments and the great atmosphere in the stadium and the Champions' Park.

The Josefshaus is the ideal place to stay on group excursions. A large house right in the center of Ruhpolding, the leisure facilities are all within easy reach.The Josefshaus has 64 beds arranged in rooms with 1 to 5 beds. (No bunk beds). Some rooms include a shower/WC; others have a shared shower/WC. Breakfast is served in our house, dinner is served in the Gasthof Neuwirt guesthouse, just 20m away.The house has several common rooms and rooms for group activities, as well as an indoor swimming pool and steam sauna.
