HEAD PROTECTIONHEAD PROTECTIONIDENTIFYING HAZARDS

A safety helmet is required where there is a risk of being injured by falling objects. Bump caps are not a substitute for safety helmets and must not be used to protect the head from falling objects.

IDENTIFYING MATERIALS

Shells are primarily made using UV stabilised high density polyethylene (HDPE) or ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). Harnesses are made using low density polyethylene or terylene webbing.

SHELF LIFE

To comply with European Standards, all helmets are marked with the quarter or month and year of manufacture. If helmets are stored in boxes in which they were supplied and do not experience environmental extremes, the shelf life of a helmet is not limited. However, it is not recommended that a helmet should be in use 5 years after date of manufacture.

ACCESSORIES

Some helmets have sweatbands/chinstrap or both already fi tted. Either can be purchased separately.

Safety helmets can be fi tted with hearing protection through clip on ear defenders.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

A helmet may be cleaned with soap and water, drying with a soft cloth. A helmet should not be cleaned with abrasive substances or solvents and must not be stored in direct sunlight or in contact with chemicals. The wearer should inspect a helmet regularly. Any helmet showing more than superfi cial abrasions or scuffi ng to the shell should be replaced.

EUROPEAN STANDARDS

EN 397 specifi es physical and performance requirements of industrial safety helmets. Certain tests are mandatory if the product is to receive EN 397 approval.

WHAT IS THE LIFETIME/SPAN OF A SAFETY HELMET? The Centurion Safety Helmet has an in-use life of up to 5 years and it is recommended that after fi ve years the helmet is destroyed. Excessive wear and tear can considerably reduce the lifespan of the helmet. If the helmet is involved in a severe accident within the 5 year period it should be replaced. Even if you have only had a minor knock the helmet should still be discarded and replaced. HOW SHOULD I CLEAN MY SAFETY HELMET? Clean your safety helmet using warm soapy water and a soft cloth. If the helmet does not come clean it should be replaced. Under no circumstances should you use solvents or abrasives. WHAT SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE INDICATORS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN HEAD PROTECTION SELECTION? The European performance standard EN397 requires a helmet to pass mandatory tests including protecting the wearer against the unlikely occurrence of a top dead centre impact. There are additional options within EN397 including for products that offer side impact protection abbreviated as LD (lateral deformation). LEVELS OF PROTECTION PHYSICAL AGENTS (NOISE)

DIRECTIVE - 2003/10/ECThis Directive is now in place and will became law in 2006. It requires that any persons working in noise levels between 80dBA (Lower Action Level) & 85dBA must be provided with suitable hearing protection on request. Where noise levels are at or above 85dBA (Upper Action Level), suitable hearing protection MUST BE SUPPLIED AND WORN. In addition, the new Exposure Limit Value requires that no worker may be exposed to more than 87dBA 8 HourEquivalent under any circumstances, taking into account any hearing protection worn, (the87dBA level is that INSIDE the Hearing Protector). There are also new Action Values for IMPACT NOISE and the requirement for Risk Assessments in the workplace is reinforced byArticle 4 of the new Directive.

SNR (STANDARD NOISE REDUCTION)SNR (STANDARD NOISE REDUCTION)

SNR (Standard Noise Reduction) is only a general means of comparing different ear muffs. Generally the higher the SNR number, the better the performance of the ear muff across a range of noise frequencies, for example: a SNR of 30 may not give a 30 decibel attenuation at all frequencies. The fi gures associated with H, M and L indicate the level ofprotection within the range of High, Medium or Low frequency noise. Examples: For the wearer of anear muff where H=35 a high frequency noise of 100 decibels will drop to 65 decibels. Wearing the same ear muff, where M=25, a medium frequency noiseof 100 decibels will drop to 75 decibels.
