Rubber expansion joints provide superior movement capability in axial compression, axial extension, and

lateral deflection, as well as in the angular and torsional direction.

Thermal movements along with other external forces and displacements, including ground settlement can

quickly exceed allowable pipe and anchor stresses. Rubber expansion joints absorb these stresses and replace

them with their own low stiffness.

Rubber expansion joints can be used also as a prevent the transfer of mechanical vibrations from machines.

Metal expansion joints reduce noise and vibration less than rubber parts. Rubber expansion joints are ideally

suited for earthquake, as well as pressure-surge and water hammer dampening.

and damp noise in operation. In comparison to the metal joints, there is the indisputable benefit of their

higher mobility due to the adaptability and flexibility. Their main advantage is the resistance to corrosion and

abrasion. Another advantage seems to be its cost, easy maintenance and installation of the expansion joints

in comparison with other compensation units.

The existing axial, lateral and angular movements are specified for the respective expansion joint systems.

In the event of simultaneous axial extension and lateral displacement, values decline following:

The combining movements which should be absorbed in an expansion joint may be uttered as axial

compression/extension, lateral displacement and angular rotation occurring in the same plane.

In an axis diagram are shown the maximum axial and lateral movements in blue color at 20°C. When

combining the movements within the diagram, the required main movement (axial or lateral) will set a limit

to the maximum allowable secondary movement. In our case we changed axial compression from -40mm to

-20mm. Consequently were changing also lateral movement.

If the operating point lies outside the defined movement area and if the rubber expansion joint is installed in

its normal length as delivered (neutral building length), rubber expansion joint may be pre set during

installation. This will move the operating point inside the allowed movement area. Complete movement

potential of the rubber expansion joint and the consequent preservation of its lifetime can be achieved by

presetting the rubber expansion joint even further in the axial direction.

The correct mounting of rubber expansion joints is crucial to the functionality of the entire pipeline system.

Rubber expansion joint should be located close to a main anchoring point. Following the rubber expansion

joint in the line, a pipe guide or guides should be installed to keep the pipe in line and prevent undue

displacement of this line.

Fixed point Sliding point Guidance

The piping system in which the rubber expansion joint is installed, must be fixed by fixed point/anchors which

are strong enough to absorb the reaction forces. The first step in the choosing of rubber expansion joints is

to select locations for the pipe anchors. Each piping system, can be divided into a number of individual

expanding pipe sections having relatively simple configurations, by means of anchors. The number of pipe

anchors selected, will depend upon of various factors. After the anchor points have been tentatively located,

will next step to calculate the change in length of pipe system due to temperature changes.

The next figures show the examples of mounting of rubber expansion joints in piping system.

Rubber expansion joints to assimilate axial movements diverted into angular movements.

In some case we need extending the rubber expansion joint above its neutral length allowing it to absorb

larger movements. In order to increase axial movement, we can presetted the rubber expansion joint to its

maximum elongation during installation. For increase lateral movement, the rubber expansion joint can be

presetted to its maximum lateral displacement against the direction of movement during installation. It is

very important that the rubber expansion joint is installed in the correct position, as this will produce the

optimum combination of movement.

Our rubber expansion joints can be equipped with internal vacuum support spirals or vacuum support rings.

The main functions is to protect against warping of the expansion joint bellows depending on the operating

pressure.

The designs shown rubber expansion joints with internal vacuum support ring and embedded support rings

inside the rubber arch.

In operating conditions with flow speeds of more than 5m/s should the rubber bellows be protected by the

flow liner. The flow liners are installed along with the expansion joint. To avoid deposits between the flow

liner and the bellows of expansion joint, the tube is perforated multiple times around its circumference, so

that the intermediate space is flushed out and no deposits are able to form in the dead spots. The lateral

displacement needs to be taken into account in dimensioning the flow liner and can in some circumstances

lead to severe narrowing of the pipeline cross section. The medium’s direction of flow must be taken into

account during installation.

Rubber expansion joints are installed in a piping system between two fixed anchor points. Under pressure

can to exert force on the fixed points. We can eliminated it by using rubber expansion joints with control

units. As a control units we can used:

Tie rods – bars fitted with spherical washers (sometimes use flat washers also) to prevent reaction

forces being imposed on the pipe system

Hinge – allows the rubber expansion joints to absorb angular movements in only one plane without

transferring reaction forces to the pipe system

Cardan (Gimbal) – similar as a hinge construction except for the fact that the angular movements can

be absorbed in two planes

As a control units we can use a hinged expansion joint which is

designed to permit angular rotation in only one plane by using a

pair of pins through hinge plates attached to each end of the

expansion joint. Hinge is designed to restrain pressure thrust of the

bellows and any extraneous forces where applicable.

For angular movements on two levels with plates we can use as a

control units a cardan hardware. Cardan is designed also to

accommodate the stresses in the event of pressure and vacuum.

Due to external influences in extreme operating conditions (extreme solar radiation, dangerous medium,

protecting workers / surrounding equipment, etc.), has been required that expansion joints be protected by

appropriate covers. The covers can be made from metal sheets with the suitable treatment of surface.

Another variant of protection can be made from fabric materials - safety hoods. There are specially designed

as a cover and protection of rubber expansion joints in case of flow of dangerous media inside requiring extra

protection of the environment due to the risk of possible leakage.

General information

The pressure test of the rubber expansion joints may sometimes lead to a negative effect on the

rubber surface. Due to risk of damage of the integrated rubber surface leading to a reduction of

lifetime of expansion joints is not recommended to perform the pressure test.

If your Rubber Expansion Joint is stored before installation, ensure that it is stored:

- in a cool well ventilated area

- at a temperature between +10°C and +30°C

- with an air humidity between 20% and 70%

Rubber expansion joints fitted with backing flanges should be stored vertically on their flanges.

Before using clean any dirt off the rubber expansion joint bellows. Check all assembly part are

mounted and functional. Tie rods have be under equal strain and set to the current line state if

needed.

Do not paint the rubber bellows.

Do not damage the labels on a rubber expansion joints.

When welding or cutting, cover the rubber bellows and protect against heat.

In operating conditions with the flow rates of more than 5m/s, use flow liners. Between the flow liner

flange and the pipeline always use a special sealing.

If possible, the attachment bolts should be fitted with the head of the bolt adjacent to the rubber

expansion joint arch. If this is not possible, ensure that the bolt thread and nut cannot damage the

rubber under maximum operating conditions.

If the above instructions are not followed, Rubber Czech cannot accept any liability for damage.

General Installation Instructions for Rubber and PTFE Expansion Joints

The following instructions should avoid the most common problems.

1. When the goods are on site, check all parts if they have any damages. In case of damage, define kind and dimension and inform us about these, so that we can declare the effective status of the delivered parts.

2. Store the rubber expansion joints on a

clear, dry and on a roofed place till you install them.

3. The maximum allowable working

pressures and temperatures have to be kept.

4. Don´t install more than one expansion

joint between two anchors.

5. Don´t paint or isolate the expansion joints

6. Protect the expansion joints from dirt, gypsum or grout splashes or any other dirt.

7. Don´t coat the raised face with grease, oil,

graphite grease or similar.

8. Protect the expansion joints from welding splashers and heating.

9. Install the expansion joints, so that

supervising and replacement is possible at any time and with-out problems.

Before implementing the pipeline, the following notes have to be kept:

1. Anchors and guides have to be fixed be-fore filling and pressure test. Simple sup-ports and spring supports are no suitable anchors or guides.

2. Expansion joints without restraints have

to be protected with adequate dimensioned anchors before pressure test.

3. Don´t stress the expansion joint with

torsion.

4. Don´t stress the expansion joint with weight of tubes.

5. The screwed joints have to be bolted strong. The maximum recommended torque has to be kept and applied, to avoid damage of the raised face.

6. The allowable installation length of the

expansion joints has to be kept.

7. The axial, lateral or angular movements mentioned in the technical part has to be kept strictly and don´t be excessed.

8. During the pressure test, don´t exceed the

test pressure with more than 1.5 fold of the design pressure.

Note:

When connecting these components into the pipeline, the system is not sealed using a separate inserted

seal, but directly by the integrated sealing surface of the rubber bellows. During a pressure test of the

rubber bellow expansion joint by the manufacturer, the integrated rubber sealing surface may be negatively

affected. For this reason, a pressure test of the rubber bellow expansion joints by the manufacturer is only

performed with particular care at the client's special request. The pressure test is usually performed after

the rubber bellow expansion joint has been installed into the completely fitted pipeline system. This is a

tried-and-tested method which has been common practice for many years. Information for the operator

can be found in the respective assembly and commissioning instructions of the pressure device.

Typical applications

Vibration compensation: The illustration below shows two pumping systems and the correct arrangement of the expansion joints for vibration damping.

a) Expansion joints without restraints The anchor (MA) has to be allocated to

withstand the complete pressure stress. b) Expansion joints with restraints

The anchor (MA) has to be allocated, to avoid the swing up of the next piping sys-

tem.

Installation of the expansion joints in a pipeline: The illustration below shows a typical application of expansion joints to compensate the thermic extension. The anchors have to be allocated to withstand the complete pressure stress. The mentioned maximum distances between the anchors have to be kept. ATTENTION: Missing anchors (MA) lead to, that serious tension appears in pipelines or at system parts. Vibrations can be transferred on the rest of the system.

Position and tightening of the screws

The accurate working of the expansion joints depends on the correct installation. The torque of the screws should guarantee the absolute tightness of the system, without excessing the below mentioned maximum recommended torque. The tightening should be crosswise and alternate, to guarantee a steady compression of the raised face.
